Chapter 16: How It All Happens
The spike strip was yanked off the road the moment the little sports car had crossed it.
Steve slammed on the brakes when he saw the sports car spin out, lift dangerously off the driver side tires as it spun, and Violet threw herself out of the drivers side door.
The young detective hit the ground hard and rolled a few feet before the car even stopped but she didn't move after that point. Steve's heart sank as he and Danny rushed out of the Camaro and toward the scene just as Goldstein crawled out of the drives side after Violet.
"Put your gun down!" Steve ordered and shot one shot before the man could respond - sending the weapon flying up and over the ruined sports car. "Get on the ground now!" Steve continued as Danny moved cautiously and stood over Violet - who still hadn't moved and blood was beginning to pool around her.
"Get us some help over here!" Danny yelled and crouched low by Violet.
Goldstein reached for Violet's weapon - he'd tucked it into his waistband - but dropped to his knees as Steve fired again. The man cried out in pain as Steve tackled him to the ground and pulled his now injured arm around his back.
"That was for Lydia," Steve stated as he pushed Goldstein's face against the asphalt, "and this is for Violet." he added as his handcuffs clicked shut around Goldstein's wrists.

Violet awoke hours later with a splitting headache and a detective lurking in the corner.
"I wouldn't try to move - if I were you." Danny said as he stepped forward into the light.
"How..how long was I..."
"Several hours," Danny stated. "You did some major damage when you decided to try and surf the asphalt, and then you heart stopped when the doctors here hit you with a pain killer that reacted to the tranquilizer Goldstein had given you. That was our fault. We didn't find the syringe until it was too late."
"He got me as I unbuckled my seat belt." Violet groaned. "I though I'd have more time."
"You fastened your seatbelt?" Danny asked in shock.
"No, he did because he wanted me to live long enough so that he could treat me like one of the others.
Danny nodded his understanding.
"I knew that you would set up a road block on the highway, so I kept him talking so that he wouldn't notice, and then when the tires popped, I figured I'd have enough time to get away. I didn't feel a thing."
"Look, Violet, I'm sorry that this happened to you. I'm sorry we couldn't protect you like I'd promised."
"You couldn't have predicted that kind of overreaction. Never in my wildest imagination could I have thought he'd do something as crazy as come at me with you and Steve right there. Maybe I was very naive about the whole situation, but that was ballzy." Violet said and shook her head slightly but stopped again when the pain flashed behind her eyes and she had to shut them to catch her breath.
"Stop. Just be calm. You have a concussion. The doctors were worried because you hit the ground pretty hard and you didn't wake up again. You've got yourself a fairly deep gash in your scalp, a couple of broken ribs, but there is no internal bleeding - thankfully. You did have an episode where your heart stopped so the doctors will be monitoring you very carefully for the foreseeable future. So take it easy, Rookie."
Violet's eyes narrowed on the seasoned detective. "Why are you all bloody?" she asked accusingly.
"It's your blood." Danny liked.
"No it's not. Were you shot?"
"It wasn't anything serious. It was a flesh wound but it bled like an S.O.B. It stopped somewhere between the crime scene and here, and I didn't even need stitches but Steve insisted on the hospital, and the doctors insisted on bandages and gauze, but no one thought to get me a clean shirt," Danny explained and gave the younger woman a sly grin. "Just a new battle scar - like McGarrett - and it will be held against you if we ever work together again."
"I got you shot on the first day we worked together - you have really bad luck Detective."
"Technically it's like the second day, and it wasn't your fault - it was Goldstein."
"But it was still because of me," Violet said with a sigh and changed the subject to keep her own emotional state in check. "What happened to Goldstein? I don't even remember hitting the ground."
"Steve shot his gun out of his hand, then shot him in the shoulder before he could use your gun, and then tackled him - in true McGarrett style - to the ground and cuffed him. He had surgery to repair his shoulder and in a few days he'll be locked up at Halawa until he is transferred to the mainland to stand trial for all his other murders." Danny explained.
"Is he here?" Violet asked fearfully.
"No. You were taken to the better trauma centre and he was made to wait and suffer while police questioned him. You're safe here and he's under maximum security where he was taken."
"And what about Lydia?" Violet asked.
"You're in the same hospital, but she's in much better condition than you are in." Danny explained with a smirk.
"I feel like I was hit by a truck." Violet said as she sighed and tried to relax again.
"Well, that's to be expected. It takes a lot of work to get a heart to start beating again." Danny stated. "You'll be bruised and sore for a long time."
"At least I'm alive." Violet said and looked at the ceiling so that she didn't have to look into the Detective's sad eyes anymore.
"Is there anyone I can call for you? Chin and Kono have gone through your files and you don't have anyone listed as emergency contact." Danny asked more seriously now.
"That's because I don't have anyone," Violet answered softly and honestly. "My parents died when I was sixteen and I was on my own since then."
"You have no one - at all?" Danny asked in shock.
"Like you said, I push everyone away."
"Not anymore." Danny stated and pulled a chair over.
"You don't have to stay and feel sorry for me." Violet snapped.
"Oh shut up, you're Ohana now, and all of Five-O will be here before long - whether you like it or not."

Two weeks later Violet walked into the Five-O office with a very tall, very strapping, young man - with ocean blue eyes and hair as sandy as the Waikiki beach - and who was hot on Violet's heals and eager to please.
Danny and Steve looked up from the work they'd started and shared a knowing glance.
"Stop!" Violet stated as she turned on her heals and looked up at the man who had followed her in. "This is a test," She stated and the man's face went white. "He's all yours, Steve." She added as she turned back to Danny and Steve and smiled sweetly.
Steve rubbed his hands together and grinned.
"I see you got the upgraded model." Danny joked.
Violet nodded.
The young man looked both confused and fearful.
"What's your name, Rookie?" Danny asked as he leaned on the smart table.
"Detective James Riley, sir." The young man answered.
Danny nodded his head and with a flick of his wrist and a gesture toward his partner, Danny set the SEAL loose.
"Come on Riley, I've got some stuff to show you." Steve stated vaguely and marched out of the office.
The young detective jumped and had to jog to keep up with Steve.
"So you found a Prince Charming - I'm impressed." Danny stated teasingly. "That didn't take you very long."
"I had a lot of time while laid up in the hospital - between Williams lectures on Police Protocol and Detective Duties." Violet said with a shrug.
"I had you right where I wanted you," Danny said with a smile and a back handed wave of dismissal, "but are you sure you want to do this? I mean, there is no shame in taking some time off. You were injured, and still are, if you ask me."
"I'm fine, and I've been told I can handle light duty. That's why we're training up the back-up now, before I get all my privileges back and head back into the field." Violet explained with a wink.
"Was it cruel and unusual punishment to let Steve at him this early?" Danny asked with a laugh.
"If anyone is going to see if he's in it for the long haul isn't Steve the right man for the job?" Violet asked.
"He got me shot on our first day together and I stayed..."
"Yes, we know! Get a new story Danny. Everyone has heard this one." Violet mocked and Danny chuckled.
"Thank you for having my back," Violet stated more seriously when the laughed had stopped. "I really do appreciate what you've done, and I can't believe you're willing to do more, after the way I acted. I've learned a lot, and I'm really sorry for the way I behaved and some of my ill-founded comments toward you and Five-O."
"Don't worry about it," Danny said with a shake of his head. "I'm sure you've learned your lesson, just as we all did. The moral of the story really is, no matter what you have – the privileges or the technology – they aren't going to take you out of harms way. This is the job you've chosen. You need to accept it and embrace it, and above all things you can't go at it alone."
Violet nodded her agreement.
"Thanks for the profile, by the way. We would have never found Goldstein without your help," Danny stated with a wink, "but I have to ask - are you sure you want to face him now?"
"Yes," Violet said and Danny could see the resolved in her eyes. "This case was everything to me. It consumed me, it broke me and it built me back up. I need to say my peace and put it all behind me. I need to move on from here and I think this is how I'm going to be able to do it."
"All right, we've had him moved back into our interrogation room. Steve has taken Riley there now and I'll be with you the whole time."
"I can handle an interrogation on my own." Violet stated defiantly.
"This isn't an interrogation. This is you facing your abductor and we're breaking all kinds of protocol to do this. You should never be allowed to see him like this. I don't really agree with the request - but you already know that - so I will be there with you the whole time." Danny explained as he walked around the table and put on arm around Violet's shoulder. "I don't know how you talked me into this, but you're stuck with me now, Kid."
"You told me to find a new partner, not a big brother." Violet accused but laughed all the same.
"We saved your life - we're kind of bonded now."
End.
This is where the prompt would fit in that spawned this whole story. I decided to leave it out because most of your have already read that, and know how it goes. I just figured this was a better ending.
