I'm going to a few chapters at a time now.
CHAPTER 15
Briarlight turned to her sister, who lay on the floor of the den. Blossomfall stared at her nervously as she ran a paw over her flank.
"Yes, Blossomfall. You are expecting kits."
Blossomfall was speechless.
"Everything will be fine, Blossomfall. I'll make sure of it. Why don't you go tell Toadstep?"
Blossomfall stayed down. "I'm too scared," she whis-pered. "I never thought this would happen. We're just friends, really."
"Don't be shy. Toadstep will be delighted."
"But-"
"Here, pretend I'm Toadstep. What will you say?" Briarlight tried her hardest to help her sister.
Blossomfall laughed. "You?"
"Go on. I don't have all day."
"Um...Well, Toadstep, see..." she broke off in a fit of laughter.
Briarlight tensed.
"You're not Toadstep."
"I know that. Pretend I am."
"I can't do this, Briarlight."
"Yes you can. Try again."
"See...I..." Blossomfall stood frozen. "I can't!"
"Keep trying."
"I...I..."
Briarlight sighed as her sister continued to stammer. "I'll come with you."
"Okay, but can I try one more time? I want to know what I'll say."
"Go on."
"Toadstep, I'm..."
"All right, let's go."
Briarlight made sure to stay a few tail-lengths behind.
Blossomfall approached Toadstep slowly.
Toadstep looked up. Blossomfall stared at her paws.
Come on, you can do this!
Blossomfall caught Briarlight's eye.
Briarlight watched.
Blossomfall made up her mind. "I'm expecting kits." she blurted out without taking a breath.
Toadstep's face reflected shock, but it quickly faded.
"That's wonderful. When?"
"Two moons, I think."
Toadstep pressed against her. "I never thought this would happen."
"Me either." Blossomfall admitted.
Briarlight looked up, excited to find that it was the half-moon. She couldn't wait to see Dewpaw again.
She sat around the camp, watching warily as the sunset patrol got ready to leave.
"Come on, Briarlight." Jayfeather nudged her.
Briarlight dragged herself after him, stumbling. "Jayfeather, wait up!"
Jayfeather stopped and let her catch up.
Briarlight sniffed the air. "ShadowClan. Littlecloud and Dewpaw are here."
"Briarlight!" Dewpaw called excitedly.
"Dewpaw!"
"Not for much longer. I'm getting my full name tonight!"
"That's great!" she sighed. "My brother's mate will have kits in less than a moon, and my sister just learned she's expecting. It feels like I'm the only one without a mate. Not that there's any cat I'd really want to be my mate if I weren't a medicine cat."
"I feel the same sometimes. Applefur and Starlingwing just had their first litter."
Mothwing and Willowshine had arrived. Mothwing twitched her tail impatiently.
"Why are Kestrelflight and Eaglepaw late?"
Jayfeather shrugged. "We'll have to keep going if they don't arrive soon."
Briarlight whispered to Dewpaw. "Jayfeather broke the code. He had kits. He gets distracted way too much."
"Shut up, Briarlight." Jayfeather huffed.
"Sorry!" Kestrelflight panted, Eaglepaw running behind him. "Gorsetail was having her kits. Second litter. We couldn't leave."
"Three of them." Eaglepaw added.
Briarlight gritted her teeth. "Enough about kits," she hissed so that only Dewpaw could hear.
Littlecloud was silent on the way to the Moonpool.
"He's grieving," Dewpaw whispered. "He's remembering Flametail."
Briarlight nodded, understanding.
When they reached the Moonpool, Littlecloud motioned for Dewpaw to come forward.
Dewpaw trembled.
"You can do it." Briarlight whispered.
Dewpaw took a shaky step forward. When she finally reached her mentor, she stopped shaking.
Littlecloud opened his mouth to speak. Sadness hung in the clearing from every medicine cat. He closed his mouth again.
"I'm sorry Flametail," he muttered. Looking up, he began the ceremony.
"I, Littlecloud, medicine cat of ShadowClan, call our ancestors to look down on this apprentice."
His legs wobbled and his eyes clouded.
"She has trained hard to understand the ways of a medicine cat."
Littlecloud closed his eyes, then opened them and blinked.
"Dewpaw, do you promise to honor the code and stand apart from rivalry between clan and clan?"
"I do," Dewpaw mewed nervously.
"Then by the powers of StarClan...I give you...your medicine cat name." he swallowed, blinked again, then went on.
"You shall be known as Dewfeather."
Littlecloud touched his nose to Dewfeather's head, then collapsed, burying his nose in his paws.
Jayfeather shifted his paws.
Littlecloud lifted his nose a mouse-length. "It wasn't your fault, Jayfeather." he whispered. "You tried your hardest to save him."
He lowered his head again. Dewfeather approached him cautiously and rested her tail on his shoulders. Littlecloud rose to his paws and touched his nose to the water. Dewfeather followed.
Mothwing lapped at the water without Willowshine forcing her to.
Briarlight took her share, then fell asleep.
...
Flametail :(
That's right, Mothwing! You know StarClan exists! Keep believing!
Maybe if you review Mothwing will be certain.
