CHAPTER 17
"What's the plan?"
Cherrynose woke up from her nap to the sound of Mousewhisker's voice. Berrynose was talking to him.
"Ivypool and Molewhisker took Snowpaw to the training hollow, and Thornclaw and Seedpaw are on patrol. I was thinking we three could maybe take Dewpaw, Amberpaw, and Lilypaw hunting?"
"Great idea." Mousewhisker nudged Cherrynose. "You awake?"
"Yes." Cherrynose rose to her paws.
Thornclaw, Seedpaw, Dustpelt, Sorreltail, and Poppyfrost returned from their patrol.
"ShadowClan still haven't marked the border." Poppyfrost groaned.
Cherrynose looked up. It was just past the new moon. ShadowClan hadn't been marking the border for a very long time.
"Since you've returned, would you like to come hunting?" Berrynose asked Seedpaw.
Seedpaw shook her head. "No thanks. I'm really tired."
"Let's go, then." Berrynose called to Cherrynose and Mousewhisker.
...
"I smell prey in the trees," Mousewhisker murmured. Amberpaw, Dewpaw, and Lilypaw had gone to the abandoned twoleg nest. The mentors stayed close by.
"Should we hunt there?" Berrynose asked.
Cherrynose nodded, scenting a vole. She found it by a small puddle. Slowly, she crept up on it, motioning for Berrynose and Mousewhisker to move. They went off to stalk their own prey.
Before the vole realized what was happening, Cherrynose pounced and dispatched it with a swift bite.
"Thank you, StarClan," she whispered. She unsheathed her claws and dug a hole to bury her catch.
The scent of mouse hit the roof of her mouth. She turned to find it behind her. She lunged around and landed on it squarely.
As she went to search for more prey, she found Mousewhisker chasing three mice. Cherrynose prepared to move out of the way.
Mousewhisker kicked off the ground and landed on two of them. The third disappeared down a hole.
Mousewhisker stood up. "At least I caught two."
Cherrynose unearthed her mouse and vole.
"Let's find the others."
No sooner did they see Amberpaw pounce on a shrew.
"Nice pounce, Amberpaw!" Cherrynose called.
"Thanks."
Berrynose walked over carrying a wren by its wing.
"Dewpaw and Lilypaw are over there." Amberpaw flicked her tail. "I've had enough of those lovesick apprentices."
"Hey!" Dewpaw stalked out of the trees. "I heard that!"
"Who cares?" Amberpaw muttered.
Cherrynose waved her tail. "Enough. Let's go back."
The apprentices continued arguing on the way back to the camp. Berrynose ended the argument by making Lilypaw carry the wren.
Cherrynose brought her mouse and vole to the nursery. The queens had come outside to enjoy the sun.
She gave the mouse and vole to Hazeltail and Rosepetal, who were watching their kits play.
Cinderheart's kits were tackling each other. Cinderheart, Blossomfall, and Dovewing lay stretched out on the rocks, their eyes half closed.
Fuzzykit and Furzekit stopped playing. They faced each other, bristling and hissing at each other.
Dovewing opened her eyes and glanced around warily before closing them again.
Furzekit and Fuzzykit were hissing out of control now. Finally, Fuzzykit lashed out her paw and knocked Furzekit over.
The gray-and-white kit squealed with surprise. Fuzzykit sprang at him and he ducked. The bigger kit had trapped the smaller. Fuzzykit clawed at Furzekit's shoulders.
Furzekit's forelegs were stained with blood only moments later.
"Stop this at once!" Rosepetal yowled.
Fuzzykit ignored her mother and continued hurting Furzekit, who shrieked with pain.
Rosepetal grabbed her kit by her scruff and sharply yanked her off Furzekit.
Hazeltail dashed over to her kit, who was writhing in pain. He had deep gashes in his white shoulders.
"Get in the nursery and stay there!" Rosepetal snapped at her daughter.
"I'll get Jayfeather," Cherrynose offered.
Hazeltail looked up. "Hurry!"
Cherrynose dashed over to the medicine den.
Jayfeather looked up. "May I help you?"
"Fuzzykit attacked Furzekit. He has deep gashes in his shoulders."
Jayfeather lifted his head. "Briarlight, fetch cobwebs." he was out of the den in an instant.
Briarlight sighed. "He's too distracted."
She grabbed cobwebs and leaves that Cherrynose didn't recognize.
Jayfeather crouched beside his son and pressed the cobwebs into his wounds. "Stay still," he whispered.
"Dock leaves will help, right?" Briarlight asked, dropping the leaves.
"Yes. Thank you, Briarlight." Jayfeather chewed the leaves into a poultice and applied them to Furzekit's wounds.
Furzekit thrashed around. "It hurts!" he wailed.
Briarlight calmed him while Jayfeather wrapped cobwebs around his shoulders.
"Will he be okay?" Hazeltail asked.
"Of course. His legs will be sore, and he'll need to stay in my den for a few days, but his wounds will heal."
"Fuzzykit needs some kind of punishment," Cinderheart called from the rocks.
"We should let Bramblestar decide that." Jayfeather responded.
"Or Rosepetal," Stonekit added.
"No, Rosepetal might go easy on her kit," Hazeltail muttered.
"No I won't!" Rosepetal snapped.
"I think she should care for the elders for a moon," Blossomfall suggested.
"Good idea. Let's check with Bramblestar first." Jayfeather stood up.
Stonekit and Haykit cornered Fuzzykit at the entrance to the nursery.
"You have to use mouse bile to get rid of ticks. And Brackenfur's basically a tick magnet!" Stonekit giggled.
"You have to listen to Purdy's long and boring stories!" Haykit laughed.
"And you have to clean out Spiderleg's nest! He can even get himself to the dirtplace!" Stonekit taunted.
"Good luck with that!" Haykit sneered.
Fuzzykit ended the taunts with an angry hiss.
...
Why was Fuzzykit angry?
