Chapter 4: Searching

Jacob's POV

Once Nessie was at school we began to set up the decorations for her party. We were going to have a birthday party for her with just the pack. I didn't understand why Nessie didn't want to invite any of her friends. I'm sure that she would have an even better time if she had her friends here as well as her family. Oh well, I guess there are just some things about her that I will never know.

As the day went by I started to get this uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. I felt this slight pulling in my chest that I tried my best to ignore. Soon it was 3 o clock and we knew that Nessie would be home in just a few minutes.

I started to get worried once thirty minutes had gone by. It usually only takes her five to ten minutes to get home. Well maybe she just got a detention that we weren't aware of. No that couldn't be it because she always lets us know what she is doing and where she is at. She probably just stopped at the store on her way home and forgot to call us.

But once it was 4 o clock I started to get even more worried then I already was.

"Has she called you at all Jake?" Sam asked. He looked as worried as I was. Why wouldn't he be? He was her father after all.

"No. I was sort of hoping that maybe she had called you or Emily" I said.

"She hasn't. I'm getting worried this is not like her at all" Sam said.

"Well I'll call her. Hopefully she is just running late and she just forgot to call us" I said.

"I hope you're right Jacob" Emily said as she joined Sam. "I'm really worried about her. I'd die if something happened to her"

Sam rubbed her arm soothingly. "We'll find her"

I dialed Nessie's cell phone only to hear it ring in her room.

"This is just great!" I screamed in frustration. "She never forgets her phone and then she does it today of all days!"

"Instead of just sitting here waiting for her I think that we should just go look for her" Sam said.

"Good idea" I agreed.

I went outside, took off my clothes, and then phased into my wolf self. I ran around the reservation, and all of Forks, but there was no sign of her anywhere. I double and then triple checked but she was nowhere to be found. On top of everything else that pulling feeling in my chest was getting worse and worse. It was probably just a physical symptom of all of my worrying.

I got back to the house at the same time as Sam and Emily.

"Any sign of her?" I asked once I was in human form.

"No" they said. I could see how the worry was eating away at them as much as it was at me. I needed my Nessie. I needed to know that she was safe.

"I think that we should go to the school and see if they know anything. Maybe she did get a detention that we didn't know about" Emily said.

"I agree. We can start there. Maybe they know something" I said.

"You're both right" Sam said. "It's our best chance right now"

We both got into our car and we headed over to the school. The parking lot was nearly empty now. Only some teachers and staff remained.

We immediately went to the principle's office.

"Hi there Mr. and Mrs. Uley. Is there anything that I can help you with?" Principle Lee asked.

"Yes actually. Our daughter was supposed to be home over two hours ago and she has not come home yet. We've tried calling her but she forgot her cell phone and we can't find her anywhere else. We're wondering if she got a detention that we didn't know about" Sam said. His voice was breaking. He just wanted to know if his daughter was safe and sound.

"We'll let me see" Lee said. He typed something into his computer and an odd expression appeared on his face.

"No, in fact it says that she only went to her first class, Math. She missed the rest" he said.

"Why?" Emily demanded.

"Well it says here that she was supposed to go to my office, but she never did show up. I'm going to look at the security cameras and see if they reveal anything" he said.

"Okay" I said. I tried to sound calm but now I was freaking out more then ever. She missed almost the entire day of school?! Why?! Why did no one even notice and bother to call us and tell us that something was going on?! I was furious and worried at the same time!

The sight of Nessie on the computer screen made my heart miss a beat. She sat there outside of his office. Then two girls appeared. One of them said something to her but I couldn't hear what it was because there was no audio.

Nessie got up and sprinted out the door. Several other students chased her outside until she tripped and fell. The students caught up to her.

I heard Emily start crying when on screen Nessie started getting kicked by the other kids. I was horrified at what I was seeing.

They were all screaming at her and from the tears on her face I could tell that it was horrible things that they were saying to her.

Then Nessie got up and ran off until she disappeared entirely. The screen went blank.

"You just let this happen!" Sam roared.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know that this was happening" the principle said defensively.

"And you didn't even bother to call us and let us know that our daughter was missing?!" Sam shouted.

I was getting so angry at this idiot of a principle for that reason to. Nessie could be in danger for all I knew and there was nothing that I could do about it!

"I'm sorry, but there was nothing that I could do. Security should have stopped this" he said.

"I don't care who's job it is. It's your job to make sure that our kids are safe when they are at school and you failed to do just that!" Sam screamed.

"I'm sorry" he said.

"You know what I've had enough of this. We need to go find our daughter that you so carelessly lost. Let me warn you right now. If anything happens to her we will sue the hell out of this school1" Sam said menacingly before storming out. Even the principle was to scared to say anything.

I was so angry that I was surprised I hadn't phased and scratched his phase off yet myself. I left before I could do just that.

We continued to search and search for the rest of the night and by morning we still had not found her. I was in pure agony and the pulling feeling in my chest just got worse.

Then I understood what it was. That was my connection to Nessie. It was trying to lead me where she was.
