He sits, legs dangling over the edge, obscured by darkness. A river gurgles below him, sensuously running over rocks, continually rubbing them smooth. Behind him, the sounds of an awakening glen echo around, bouncing off tree after tree. He turns to his companion, barely a shadow next to his bulky figure.

( a lone boy, in darkness )

He looks over his shoulder and slowly reaches his hand out, easily engulfing the tiny brunette's hand in his own.

( he reaches out to nothing )

The sun rises, bright rays piercing through the last of the night, triumphing over the darkness at last. Shafts of golden light set his blonde hair ablaze, and he chooses to observe his companion instead of watching the sun start its ascent towards the heavens.

He thinks he can see the sunrise playing out in her eyes, anyway. Her eyes are green, much like the small forest sitting behind them, with the occasional fleck of gold shining through, comparable to the bright shafts of light bearing down upon them. He watches as lights play around her, mottling the floor and shining on her porcelain skin. Her high cheekbones and delicate features are in sharp contrast as light streaks past her, softly caressing her face and weaving its way through her finely spun locks of hair.

"You're missing the sunrise," she states, her melodic voice breaking through the silent morning.

( he stares out at space, intent and focused )

"As long as I don't miss you, princess, then I'm fine," he returns with an easy smile in her direction. Her laugh tinkles and he closes his eyes, memorizing the bell-like ringing of it and committing it to memory.

( he speaks to no one )

They watch the rest of the sunrise in silence.

"you want to watch the sunrise, but darling, i think you have to be alive to do that."

( he's broken and she's not there to fix him and guide him home )

He sits on the overhang, alone.

( the townspeople shake their heads sadly, he's lost without her )

A strong victor, no more.

( a broken boy sits in his place )
