August 1, 9:51 A.M. District Court, Courtroom No. 4

Detective Snodgrass testified for the second time.

"When it came time for the analysis of the bullets, we compared ballistic markings to the pistol found in the locker room of James Madison High School after the murder of Reggie Simmons. We felt there was a connection because the bullets had the same diameter: .45 caliber. The tests also seemed to confirm our suspicions. Allison Brooks was the assassin!"

The judge sighed, "There we go. It seems to me that all of the confusion has been cleared up. Ms. Fey, you may go ahead with your Cross-Examination."

She replied, "Of course."

"When it came time for the analysis of the bullets, we compared ballistic markings to the pistol found in the locker room of James Madison High School after the murder of Reggie Simmons. We felt there was a connection because the bullets had the same diameter: .45 caliber."

Maya yelled, "Hold it... er, hold it right there!"

"And yet the reports found within the autopsy report for Mr. Simmons found that .75 caliber bullets were fired into his skull, not .45 caliber bullets. So how do you..."

Edgeworth interrupted, "Objection!" He waved his finger mockingly and sneered.

"How simple are you? Don't you realize that Ms. Brooks didn't kill Mr. Simmons! And even if she had killed him, she would have used a different gun to thrown suspicion off of her!"

The "defense attorney" groaned, "Come on!" Snodgrass continued, "And when we examined our quantitative sources..."

"The tests also seemed to confirm our suspicions. Allison Brooks was the assassin!" Maya looked at the judge, then Edgeworth, and finally, Mr. Snodgrass.

"Objection!"

She pointed her finger at the detective. "Mr. Snodgrass, how do you know for a fact that my client tried to kill him?" In response, the young detective explained, "Think about it! Who else could have done it! It's called 'process of elimination', you fool!" Not taking Mr. Snodgrass's insult lightly, Maya slammed her hands down on the bench.

"As before, where's your proof? I think the only evidence you have is your own suspicion and bias!" Snodgrass leaped, and then screamed, "Whaaaaat?"

The courtroom gallery erupted into chatter, and the judge banged his gavel three times. "Order! Order in the court!"

"Mr. Snodgrass, this is your final warning. If you can not come up with the reasonable evidence necessary to aid the prosecution, you will be dismissed from the stand."

He answered, "Okay! Here it comes: My final testimony to you!"

Maya thought, "If only Nick was here, maybe I'd have a chance. Now that I think about it, I wonder how he's doing up against Prosecutor Helado..."

August 1, 10:00 A.M. District Court, Courtroom No. 1

Phoenix took a seat at the counsel bench, and Jamie nervously sat down, hoping for the best. The court gallery was filled completely, with not a seat to spare. Local news agencies had appeared, filming the trial for those who could not attend. Three cameras were present: FOX News, CNN, and RNN.

Phoenix joked, "RNN... I guess Harry Ratchet didn't want to miss out on the big scoop."

Jamie shuddered, "Or maybe he wants to see me face the death penalty."

The attorney sighed, "What is with your pessimistic outlook for the future? There's still time. You aren't going to die... yet."

The judge sat down at the panel and banged his gavel. He said, "The court is now in session for the trial of Ms. Jamie Patterson."

Prosecutor Helado sneered, "The prosecution is ready, Your Honor."

Phoenix proudly replied, "The defense is ready, Your Honor."

The judge continued. "Mr. Helado... it seems that now we have fulfilled your request. You can continue where we left off."

Helado sneered, "Ah, yes. Now my job is to prove the guilt of Ms. Patterson over there." The judge asked, "Mr. Helado, opening statement?"

"Jamie Patterson is Guilty of murder in the first degree. On July 27, she brutally murdered Reggie Simmons in the locker room of James Madison High School. And now, we are here debating her innocence. Soy más inteligente de lo que piensas, Sr. Wright. With that over with, I have decided on my first witness. Your Honor... bring Detective Dick Gumshoe to the stand en punto!"

Gumshoe was on the stand immediately. He said, "Your Honor, I re-examined the scene and I have come to a conclusion."

Helado scoffed, "And what is that?"

"My conclusion is that Jamie Patterson's deoxyribonucleic acid was found on the handle of the pistol."

Helado scrunched his face. "¿Qué coño estás hablando? What on Earth is dee-oxie-ryebo-nooclayic aceed?"

Gumshoe shrugged, "Edgeworth told me that is was fancy talk for DNA. In short, genetic material. It proves that Ms. Patterson was the killer!"

The judge sighed, "Detective... you're supposed to testify about what you found, not just what seems to be correlated to the case. Begin, if you will."

Gumshoe said, "Well... when I examined the scene the second time and ran more tests, I evaluated the data collected. A small amount of DNA was found on the handle of the pistol. It was found to match the DNA of Ms. Patterson. Considering that DNA matches are one in several billion, this proves the guilt of the defendant!"

Phoenix groaned to himself, "Ugh... I don't stand a chance now! DNA is seemingly irrefutable proof. But then again, perhaps I shouldn't be asking myself why Jamie's DNA is on the pistol, but rather how did her DNA end up on the pistol. Maybe I have a chance!"

The judge enforced, "Mr. Wright, Cross-Examine Detective Gumshoe. We aren't going to stand here and stare at everyone."

"Well... when I examined the scene the second time and ran more tests, I evaluated the data collected. A small amount of DNA was found on the handle of the pistol."

Phoenix yelled, "Hold it!"

"Approximately how much DNA was present?"

Gumshoe answered, "You can't exactly measure the amount of DNA that is present. DNA is beyond microscopic, and therefore, it can not be measured accurately. Regardless..."

"It was found to match the DNA of Ms. Patterson. Considering that DNA matches are one in several billion, this proves the guilt of the defendant!"

The attorney screamed, "Objection!"

"Detective, you seem to be overly confident in the abilities of DNA to validate claims. And yet, what type of DNA did you find?"

Gumshoe answered, "Mitochondrial."

Phoenix smirked, "Yet, you don't realize that mDNA is the same in all maternal relatives! All descendants and predecessors of Jamie's mom would have the same mitochondrial DNA as her! How exactly can you prove her guilt now?"

The detective leaped into the air. "Arrgh!"

The gallery roared in excitement, and the judge responded by banging his gavel three times.

"Order! Order in the court, I say!"

"Detective, it seems that your earlier claim has been made invalid. As such, could you please give your testimony again?"
