August 1, 1:15 P.M. District Court, Courtroom No. 1
The doors in the back of the courtroom opened and Olivia Mazak walked from the entrance, past the gallery, and to the witness stand where she was subsequently sworn in by the bailiff. A slightly lethargic Maya Fey was losing strength, not sure if the trial would ever end.
The judge asked the witness, "Please state your name and occupation."
She answered, "Your Honor, I am Olivia Mazak, one of the best friends of Sybbie Mackey. I am here mainly to help enforce her claims made earlier today. In fact, I was with her when Mr. Watson was shot." The court gallery began to rumble softy, which was not enough to get the judge to use the gavel.
His Honor continued, "Ms. Mazak, I will allow you to give an initial testimony, then I will let Mr. Edgeworth provide further evidence if it is available. Please inform the court what you saw aboot the time of the shooting."
"I actually happened to be at the site of the shooting when the incident occurred. I was deep in the crowd as he gave his speech. I turned my head to look at the crowd's reaction. All of a sudden, I heard this loud explosion. Initially, I was too shocked to do anything, including looking at Watson again. I waited until the police and EMS arrived, and I then led them to where Mr. Watson was."
The judge's eyes snapped open in surprise. "Ah! It all makes sense. But to me it seems weird that you wouldn't look to see what had happened."
Mazak sighed, "I'm weird sometimes. I guess I was just too scared to look towards the podium." His Honor turned to the defense. "Ms. Fey, you can Cross-Examine the witness."
"I actually happened to be at the site of the shooting when the incident occurred. I was deep in the crowd as he gave his speech. I turned my head to look at the crowd's reaction. All of a sudden, I heard this loud explosion. Initially, I was too shocked to do anything, including looking at Watson again."
Maya yelled, "Hold it!"
"That seems illogical. How can you hear an explosion and be too scared to look where the gunshot came from? Any normal person would look over there in surprise and curiosity!"
Edgeworth interrupted, "Objection!"
"Your Honor, Ms. Fey is both stalling the proceedings and is making irrelevant statements! What the witness did in regards to looking at Watson does not matter!"
His Honor nodded his head. "Objection sustained. The jury will disregard the questioning of the witness's judgement."
Maya grumbled and her hands made their way towards the counsel bench, trembling ever so slightly. Mazak sighed, "After the shot was fired..."
"I waited until the police and EMS arrived, and I then led them to where Mr. Watson was." Maya paused for a brief second and then let out a tremendous yell.
"OBJECTION!"
Her finger darted towards Mazak, who was in the middle of an apparent trance. She lept into the air and her face turned to one of sheer horror. The "defense attorney" questioned, "Ms. Mazak. Has there ever been a time that you have been deemed 'psychic' by someone? Maybe a doctor?" Mazak shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know. Maybe?"
A pair of cramped hands slammed down upon the defense's counsel bench. "Ms. Mazak, I'd like to know something, and I'd like to know it now. How did you happen to know where Mr. Watson was if you never looked at him?! You couldn't have figured out where he was based on the volume of the shots!"
Mazak screamed, "What? How?!"
Maya reminded her of the facts previously stated. "Remember how you said you were in the crowd? Specifically, a dense, thick crowd of people? The density of the crowd would have made the gunshots less audible, and yet you led the authorities right to him! That is something that, unfortunately, only the shooter would have known! How do you explain that?"
Mazak threw her hands into the air in shock and her mouth opened wide. She had been rendered speechless. The whole court gallery began to roar, and the judge soon was using his gavel once again.
"Order! Order in the court!"
"Ms. Mazak, the court finds your previous testimony quite suspicious. I would recommend that you do not give testimony that incriminates yourself while testifying against someone else. In short, your credibility has gone out the window."
Edgeworth added, "Ms. Mazak, I would also like to present a piece of evidence to the court for your sake. Your Honor, it was discovered that the shooter had dropped snd seemingly left the attack weapon after the shots were fired. A pistol capable of firing .50 caliber bullets was found 340 feet away from Mr. Watson when the police examined the scene."
His Honor asked, "Mr. Edgeworth, were any fingerprints found on the handle?"
The prosecutor answered, "No. No fingerprints were found on the pistol. However, there was blood on the handle, seemingly from the shooter. The blood did not match the DNA of any offender currently registered at both the state and national levels."
The judge asked, "So the perpetrator had not previously committed an act of violence. Regardless, why would the shooter's blood be on the handle, and not Mr. Watson's?"
Edgeworth grumbled, "Well, the gun may have been fired inside of a shirt sleeve or other enclosed space, causing the heat from the gunshot to cause gunpowder burns severe enough to the shooter's hands to cause them to bleed. Subsequently, blood collected on the gun's handle. But I'm pretty sure that this evidence is unimportant for now."
Mazak raised her hands slightly and yelled, "Yeah! Of course! Frankly, I didn't get a chance to see the killer's face, either!"
Maya happened to gave towards the witness stand and caught a glimpse of the witness's hands as they were positioned upright. There were red streaks running down her hands towards her palms, which looked normal.
She yelled, "Hold it!"
"Ms. Mazak, could you raise your hands again?"
She smiled and replied, "Sure thing." Mazak's hands raised into the air, confirming what Maya had seen earlier; red streaks on her hands which ran towards the palms, then stopped.
Maya inquired, "And how is it, Ms. Mazak, that your hands look like that?"
The witness answered, "Well, I slipped on the sidewalk a few days ago and I scraped up my hands as a result." Maya looked at Mazak with a more serious face. "Are you sure that those aren't gunpowder burns on your hands?"
She screamed, "Gunpowder burns?! Are you trying to suggest that I was involved in the crime?" The whole court erupted into chatter.
Edgeworth broke the noise with a proud and triumphant, "Objection!"
"Ms. Fey, do not assume that that just because the witness has red marks on her fingers makes her the shooter! It's not even been confirmed that the witness has burn marks on her fingers in the first place!"
His Honor sided with the prosecution. "Objection sustained. Ms. Fey, I cannot let you indict the witness any further. Until a doctor can prove that Ms. Mazak indeed has gunpowder burns on her hands, you won't be able to send the case down that route."
Maya groaned, "Come on! I almost was getting a solid trail of connections in this case! But like Nick says sometimes, you have to think backwards. Instead of thinking about why Ms. Mazak has gunpowder burns, I will have to think of why she couldn't have not had gunpowder burns on her hands!"
The court fell silent as the judge asked if there were any medical professionals in the gallery. There were none.
The judge moaned, "I will need to once again recess the court in order to find a doctor with experience treating burns. I will advise both counsels when sufficient evidence has been found. Court is now in recess!"
