August 1, 2:45 P.M. District Court, Courtroom No. 1
Prosecutor Helado's head remained sunken down near the prosecutor's bench as the defense's as Phoenix continued to deliver his points to the Judge. "As you can see, Your Honor, I am now reflecting back on a previous case I took on, where previously Miss Patterson's band director was charged with the crime she now stand accused of. I feel based on the evidence that right now we are facing a case of shifting blame."
His Honor asked, "Who is shifting the blame?" Phoenix replied, "Ms. Mackey, I cannot say for sure whether you are involved with this whole charade of murder and assassination, but from what I can tell, you are hiding something. And you are hiding something massive. Something that will blow this case wide open."
Sybbie yelled, "My God, defense attorney! You've been arguing your tale for the past few hours here to me and the court! What are you going to get out of me that will get to the bottom of this?! What will…" Sybbie snapped out of her anger and suddenly became indifferent. "…*ahem* find an end to the case?"
Just when Phoenix was to give an explanation, the doors to the courtroom burst open with a violent shock. Their hinges nearly blew off from the force of them opening. There, in the midst of the dust scattered by this, was Maya Fey, holding a copy of the Court Record from the trial of Alli Brooks. The latter was standing behind the spirit medium, in awe that she managed to bust the doors open so wide. The defense attorney looked on at the duo in shock. Helado couldn't help but stare.
"Your Honor, I would like to settle this debate over Sybbie Mackey once and for all!" The judge asked, "What debate?" Maya replied, "Over who is really Guilty… is it Jamie, or somebody else?" She led Alli to the defense counsel. Helado was now outnumbered and in for a significant defeat. Maya handed the documents to Phoenix and he read them briefly before taking over the job of finding the truth.
Phoenix yelled, "Your Honor, I would personally like to thank you for keeping a cool head during this trial." The judge smiled and answered, "Why thank you, Mr. Wright." Helado sneered, "Enough kissing up to the Judge, Señor. Get to the point!"
The defense attorney retorted, "Thank you very much, Mr. Helado, for getting right in the way of the process. Now let me talk for the next two minutes. Anyway, I would like to tell the whole court what really happened to Reggie Simmons! Ms. Mackey!"
"Yes, Mr. Wright?" Sybbie inquired turned her head to the defense. Phoenix explained to the audience and news cameras, "Ms. Mackey, you used to date Mr. Simmons in the past, did you not?" She replied, "Yes, I did. Why are you asking me about it?"
"Ms. Mackey, I am asking you about this because if I remember correctly, you and Mr. Simmons no longer associate with each other. Why is that?" She noted, "Ah, we had an argument one day and he had enough of me and vice versa and so our relationship ended like most do."
The defense attorney violently let his hands slap against the fine wood grain of the counsel bench. "Ms. Mackey, I would appreciate you tell me about how you felt towards the late Mr. Simmons. Did you feel happy, sad, angry?"
Sybbie sighed, "Well, I was angry and sad as a result of the break-up and yet it was fine after a few weeks."
Phoenix's eyes widened and he smirked. "And yet, your friend, Olivia Mazak, claims the exact opposite! She claimed in her testimony at another trial that you were infuriated with Mr. Simmons! You wanted him out of your life… permanently! That you would even resort to murder to fulfill your needs! How do you explain that?"
Sybbie leaped into the air and shook her head violently before replying. "What?! I never said that! Why are you trying to blame the crime on me now? T-This is why I hate defense—" Mr. Helado interrupted with a bold, "¡Objeción!" "Your Honor, the defense is committing hearsay!"
His Honor shook his head side-to-side. "Objection overruled. Mr. Helado, it is evidence extracted from testimony, hence, it is an affidavit and is not hearsay." Held knew at that point that the rope called the prosecution's case was slipping out of his hands faster than he could grab onto it.
The defense attorney resumed, "Ms. Mazak also claimed that you were the mastermind behind the attempted assassination of the James Madison High School principal, Gregory Watson. Furthermore, Ms. Mazak had second-degree gunpowder burns on her hands from the assassination attempt. Even though we don't have the gun used to kill Mr. Simmons, we can still prove his killer by her mannerisms!"
Helado yelled, "¡Espera un minuto! Wait a minute! But what about the drunk driving crash? How, pray tell, Mr. Wright are you going to explain why that happened?" Phoenix groaned, "Mr. Helado, we have time to find that out later. But we won't get anywhere as long as we have a killer who doesn't want to talk!"
Sybbie clenched her fists very tightly and held them closely to her body, as if she was about to throw a punch. The Judge asked, "Ms. Mackey, would you like to elaborate about these accusations? Did you or did you not kill Reggie Simmons on the day of the murder?"
Sybbie Mackey grimaced and her eyes seemed to change from a blue to a dull red color. Her teeth clenched and she shook violently. She then reached down next to the witness stand to rapidly pulled out and assembled a large object. When she raised it to eye level, it became obvious what it was; it was a trombone, but not just any trombone; it had gunpowder residue on it and contained what looked like large amounts of the substance inside the bore of the instrument.
Phoenix yelled, "Now how did she manage to smuggle this into the courtroom?!"
While gripping her hair violently with one hand, she buzzed a long note on the trombone, which was around a middle C. Her left hand reached into a pocket. After fishing around in the pocket for a short bit, Sybbie pulled her hand out. A lighter was now inside her hand.
Phoenix, Maya, Alli, and Mr. Helado gasped in shock. Sybbie laughed maniacally and she exploded, "Adiós, muchachos!" Her hand flipped his lighter's cover and the flame ignited. She roared, "America, FUCK YEAH!" before lighting the powder. All then ducked for cover, expecting the worst.
Indeed, it happened. There was a flash of light that made all inside the room invisible and the sound of a powerful explosion. A small blast wave erupted from the witness stand. All had luckily ducked under the nearest sturdy object, so no one was blown about. Sybil's trombone blew apart and the slide flew through the air, up toward the roof, before breaking some glass and flying out of the courtroom.
After 10 seconds, there was nothing but silence for the next few minutes. Nobody moved (or tried to move) after His Honor stood up. All looked towards the witness stand, where an unconscious Sybbie Mackey stood. Her trombone was still in her hand, but her face was blackened, her nose broken, her skull fractured at the sides. She was now slumped up lifelessly against the wall.
For a while, many in the room thought that Sybbie was dead, a victim of her own method of last minute collateral destruction; death by trombone. But after several more seconds, she gasped for air once. And then twice, but no words came out. Only the horrendous screams of deep burns and a concussion.
It would be 10 minutes before the emergency services would evacuate Ms. Mackey from the room. The Judge asked Mr. Helado, "Do you have any more witnesses to call to the stand?" Helado replied, "No, Your Honor. Unfortunately, I personally feel Ms. Mackey admitted her guilt by her recent kamikaze attempt."
In response, the Judge announced, "If so, then I have a verdict to announce. This court find the defendant, Ms. Jamie Patterson…" "Not Guilty."
Confetti rained down from the ceiling and the members of the court gallery who had the courage to cheer did so. Helado simply stood facing the wall, embracing his defeat.
"Court is adjourned!" His Honor yelled as he banged his gavel for the final time in the trial.
