Instead of going to Tommy Lisbon's house, Jane directed the cab driver to the church where Lisbon was supposed to get married to Pike. He wanted to check for himself if Annie was playing a joke on them, or if something bad had happened.
For a moment he really considered it all being a joke from the teenager, who'd prefer to see her aunt getting married to him than to her current boyfriend. Honestly, it was a scenario Jane favored, too, but Lisbon had made her decision clear. He'd been too late. Now all he could do was make sure she could go through with what she really wanted – even if it was marrying Marcus Pike.
When the cab stopped in front of the church, Jane thought he should have called ahead instead of crashing the wedding. It was too late now though. Jimmy and Stan Lisbon were waiting close to the street. Obviously the wedding hadn't started and Lisbon hadn't arrived yet. The uneasy feeling in Jane's stomach got worse.
"Jane," James asked, surprised, "what are you doing here?"
"Lisbon hasn't arrived yet, has she?"
Both Lisbon brothers shook their heads. Jane sighed heavily; then he made his way over to the open church doors. The guests were a manageable number, and most of them had already taken a seat somewhere between the middle and front rows.
Cho was the first to spot him. He touched Fischer's arm before he got up to make his way over to him. Of course he wasn't the only one who noticed the blond consultant. Gossip must have spread quickly.
"Jane. What are you doing here?" Cho asked, his arms crossed in front of his chest. Jane knew Cho's loyalty would always lie with Lisbon and that the Korean was more interested in Lisbon's happiness than anything else. His whole demeanor screamed that he wouldn't let Jane ruin his friend's and former boss' wedding.
"I got a mysterious call from Annie. Something is wrong, Cho, I can feel it. I wouldn't be here otherwise."
The Korean gave him a questioning look, before he threw a glance at his watch. "Lisbon is supposed to arrive in ten minutes. I'll call her and ask her if everything is okay. You should wait outside, before Pike sees you."
"I think it's already too late for that," Jane mumbled quietly as a very angry looking Pike made his way over to them.
"I can't believe this!" Pike shouted furiously. "Not only did you try ruining Teresa's life, now you're trying to ruin her wedding as well! Don't you have any pride left in your sorry excuse for a human mind?!" Cho quickly managed to step between the two of them before Pike could raise his fist to punch Jane in the face.
Jane cringed at Pike's words, although he knew he deserved them. "I haven't come to ruin your wedding," he explained. "I got a call from Annie and I believe Lisbon is in serious danger. Something must have happened, I swear."
"Is this one of your stupid games, Jane?!" Pike yelled angrily, "Up until now I have always kept silent for Teresa's sake when it came to you, but I won't anymore. You have to get it into that crazy head of yours: She doesn't love you. She never has and never will. She chose me, not you. You've had your chance and you've hurt her more than enough all these years. Whatever you planned won't work. Teresa and I are going to marry today and nothing, not even you, are going to change this fact. Now get your sorry ass out of this church, or I'll forget myself!"
The whole church was silent after Pike's fit of rage. Jane swallowed hard and was about to turn around when the ringing of a phone disturbed the silence. All he'd wanted to do was help, but he felt that he wasn't welcome here. He should just go, take the cab which was still waiting and go to the airport.
"What?!" Tommy Lisbon exclaimed. "Are you serious? Where? Oh God. Oh God. I'm on my way."
"What happened?" Pike asked, concerned, stopping Tommy who was about to leave the church. His face was as white as snow, his whole body was shivering.
"Annie… She's at the hospital. She's been shot. I have to go to her, she's lost so much blood." His brothers came up next to him.
"I'll drive you," Jimmy offered.
Jane and Pike exchanged looks. "Where is Lisbon?" Cho finally asked, dreading the answer.
"I don't know. I… they just called because of Annie. Oh God, I need to get to my daughter, I need to go there now."
The Lisbon brothers left the church, while the guests started gossiping about what had just happened.
"Annie was supposed to take the old timer with Teresa," Pike finally said, his facial expression worried.
"What the hell is going on here? Jane? Cho?" Fischer came up behind them, uncertain what to do.
"I'll go to the hospital," Jane announced. "Pike… You should let your guests know the wedding will be delayed."
"Don't tell me what to do, Jane!" he answered, although he knew the consultant was probably right.
Jane rolled his eyes. "I know you hate me, but we need to find out what happened to Lisbon. This is about her and not about you and me. Cho, Fischer…"
"We'll go to the hospital and talk to the paramedics, find out where they found Annie. Then we'll check if anyone's seen anything. We'll call you if we find anything," Cho said to Pike, who felt a little bit at a loss.
The group dispersed quickly. Jane stepped outside just in time to see Tommy's car pull out of the parking spot. He quickly ran over to the cab driver, telling him to follow Tommy's car. The cab driver smiled. He hadn't had this much action in a very long time.

Tommy Lisbon had experienced a wide range of fear and loss in his life. There was the loss of his mother when he'd been a small child. He barely remembered her, although Lisbon had done her best to tell him stories of her and keep her memories alive. There was the fear when his dad was so drunk, he would beat his own children up because he couldn't cope with the death of his wife. There was the loss he'd experienced when Lisbon had left for California, the third time he lost a parental figure in his life. He'd experienced fear whenever he was hunting down someone as a bounty hunter… but he'd never in his life experienced the fear he'd felt when he'd gotten the call from he hospital telling him his daughter's been shot. She was in critical condition. She'd lost a lot of blood. Tommy felt sick to his stomach, pleading with Jimmy to finally take his foot from the brake and hurry up. He needed to get to the hospital; he needed to see his daughter.
Finally, they arrived. Jimmy stopped the car right in front of the emergency entrance of the hospital. Tommy had opened the door and jumped out before the car came to a full stop.
"Stan, go after him, I'll park the car and be right behind you." His brother nodded and followed Tommy, who was talking to the nurse at the information desk.
"I need to see my daughter. Annie Lisbon, she's been shot, I just got a call. Where is she?"
The nurse tried her best to calm him down, but there was nothing worse in the world than the worry for one's child. "Sir, Miss Lisbon is in surgery. You can't see her now, but once the doctors are finished, we will tell you immediately. Please have a seat in the waiting area until then. There's nothing more you can do."
"But I need to see her!" Tommy insisted. Stan touched his shoulder, trying to calm his brother down.
"Tommy, let the doctors do their work. They are doing their best to help her, aren't they?" The nurse nodded in agreement.
He guided his shaken-up brother to the waiting area, where they took a seat. Only moment later, Jane arrived at the hospital, going straight toward the brothers who seemed surprised to see him there.
"How is Annie?" Jane asked immediately.
Stan shook his head, while Tommy buried his face in his hands.
"Do we know what happened? Has anyone seen Lisbon?"
Tommy's head shot up. "Wait, Teresa's not with Annie? I thought they were supposed to get to the church together!"
"Do you think…?" Stan murmured, but didn't finish the sentence.
"I hope not. That's why we need to talk to Annie, to know what happened." The blond consultant sat down opposite of the brothers. James arrived a moment later, taking a seat next to his brothers. He didn't say anything. All they could do now was wait.

One hour later, Jane's phone started to vibrate. He excused himself and answered the call. It was Cho.
"We're at the crime scene. Fischer is trying to get one of the paramedics on the phone. No sign of Lisbon."
"Has anyone seen anything?"
"No, we've just talked to the woman who found Annie. She was on her way home from the playground with her child when she saw Annie lying in the street. She called the paramedics and stayed with them until they went off to the hospital."
Jane closed his eyes, massaging his nasal bone. Someone must have seen something.
"I'll call Wylie and have him check for security cameras around the area. Pike and Fischer are checking Thomas Lisbon's house out. I'll canvass the neighborhood and ask if anyone's seen anything suspicious."
"Good."
"We will find her, Jane."
Jane just nodded before he hung up. Damn, he needed to talk to Annie. She was the only one who knew what happened.
It took another hour of waiting helplessly in the waiting area before a doctor came to the nurse at the information desk, who pointed in their direction.
The Lisbon brothers and Jane got up to meet the doctor, who shook Tommy Lisbon's hand. "Mr. Lisbon, I came to tell you that your daughter's condition improved. She's had surgery on her leg and she was very lucky the bullet didn't hit any important arteries. Someone must have drugged her with a heavy dose of chloroform though. It might take a while until the drug is out of her system and she wakes up, but you're allowed to see her now."
"Did she say anything?" Jane wanted to know.
The doctor looked up. "She has been mumbling a name from time to time. We figured it was her mother's."
"What name?" Tommy asked.
"Jane."
The men looked at each other. "Maybe you should come with me," Tommy finally said.
Jane nodded and both men followed the doctor, who led them down a hallway to a patient's room. "We will move her to another room once she's fully awake, but for now she'll stay here. Please don't stay too long, she needs her rest."
"Thank you doctor," Tommy mumbled before rushing over to his daughter's bed. She was dressed in a white hospital gown, the blanket covering her leg. An IV with painkillers was attached to the back of her hand.
"Where are her belongings?" Jane asked the doctor.
"I'll make sure they are sent to you."
The doctor left. Jane watched father and daughter from the door with a heavy heart. He knew exactly how Tommy felt. The desperation, the fear… the guilt he'd let it happen although there was nothing he could have done about it in the first place. Hopefully, Tommy would never experience the kind of loss he'd had to go through. Annie would be fine. She was a Lisbon, she was strong.
"Jane…" she whispered, barely audible.
Jane rushed over to her bedside to take her hand. "Annie. Annie it's okay, I'm here."
"Jane," she whispered again, this time louder. Her eyelids started fluttering, but she closed them again.
"It's going to be all right, Annie," Tommy said. He leaned down to kiss her forehead. "Why do you think she's calling your name?"
"She… she called me. That's why I came back. I was on my way to the airport when her call came. First I thought it was a joke, that she was trying to bring me back to stop the wedding, but it wasn't."
"Why did she call you? Why not me?"
"I think it has to do with Lisbon's vanishing. She… she thought I could help, I guess. She's the only one who knows what really happened."
"Jane… Reese." The men directed their attention back to the girl. Once again her eyelids were fluttering, but this time she managed to actually blink.
"Annie!" Tommy exclaimed, relieved.
"Jane… Reese…" It took her a lot of effort to talk because of the pain and the drugs which were still in her system. "She… stop the wedding. Reese, I… I gave her… your ring. The limousine… I couldn't breathe… Locked in. Reese tried, but… No air. They pulled me out… Reese, I had to help but they… shot me. All the blood… so much blood… pain." She closed her eyes and whimpered in pain.
"Shhh, it's okay. It's okay, Annie," Tommy whispered, caressing her head. "You're safe now."
Annie forced herself to open her eyes once more, looking directly into Jane's. "You must… find her. She… She… loves you. She wanted… to stop the wed…" Her eyes rolled back and she was out once more.
Tommy and Jane stared at each other. They could draw their own conclusions from the few words Annie had managed to say.
Jane pulled his phone out to call Cho, telling him to be on the look out for any kind of limousine. "He's got her, Cho. Carmen. I know he's got her."
After he hung up, he turned around to see Tommy bringing Annie's hand to his mouth.
"You have a very strong daughter. She's going to make a great cop one day," Jane said. Annie's words were still running crazily in his head. Lisbon had his ring and she'd wanted to stop the wedding… because she loved him. His heart gave a slight jump at the thought. Maybe not everything was lost after all.
"Tommy, I have to leave now and find Lisbon. You have to stay here with Annie. I'll ask Cho to put two officers on the door. She's probably seen the abductor and could identify them. We have to be very careful from now on. Don't let anyone inside here you don't know. Someone will explain everything to the hospital."
"You will save my sister, won't you, Jane?" Tommy asked, concerned. Now that he'd heard what must have happened, the worry for his sister grew worse.
"I will. I'm always going to save her," he promised Lisbon's brother, just like he'd promised her a few years ago.

It was the early afternoon when everyone made it back to the police office. Even Pike was there, looking more than worried and a little lost. He usually dealt with art thefts and not with serial killers and kidnappers. Jane was pretty sure he didn't know how it felt if someone you loved deeply was taken away from you. This was the second time he'd lost Lisbon to a crazy psychopath. He could only hope it would turn out like last time and they would get her back alive.
Swallowing hard, he set down his cup of tea and walked over to the bulletin board Fischer had set up.
"We have a traffic cam recording a black limousine coming from the direction of Lisbon's neighborhood driving north. Wylie is running the license plates to find out whom the car belongs to. Cho and I have questioned almost everyone on Lisbon's street and some parts of the neighborhood, but no one admits to having seen anything. The limousine is our only lead until we get results from the lab where they are analyzing Annie's clothes for DNA samples. We took some from the paramedics and the woman who found her to rule them out. I hope the guys down in the lab will turn up something, but it'll take them another six hours at least," she explained to her team.
"It's time we don't have. If Carmen has her, then…" Pike started but didn't continue.
"I am sorry, Pike, but there's nothing else we can do at the moment. Believe me, we all want to find her." Her phone rang and she stepped away to answer the call.
Pike looked at Jane, his expression bitter and worried. "I really thought if anything was going to come between Teresa and me it would be you. Guess I was wrong."
It must have taken him some of his pride to tell him that much, Jane figured. Now was not the time to cockfight; they had to find Lisbon. "She told me to leave and that's what I did. I came back because Annie called me. I… just want to make sure she's all right." Well, if what Annie'd said was true, Lisbon had actually been on her way to stop the wedding and dump Marcus. But he would keep that information to himself until he could talk to Lisbon and she could tell him herself.
"I should have picked her up myself. I told her I had a surprise for her… If I'd been there maybe all of this wouldn't have happened."
"Or maybe you would be dead," Jane suggested. Pike looked up. "It's not your fault. It's nobody's fault. We all should have known Carmen would make a move at some point."
"But I'm her fiancé!"
Jane didn't reply to that.
Fischer came back. "Wylie ran the license plate. The limousine is registered to a limousine rental service called luxurylines. I'll go and check it out."
"I'll go with you," Pike and Jane answered at the same time.
"It's our only lead," Cho stated. "Jane, you're with me. We'll meet you there."

The first thing she felt as she slowly woke up was the incredible cold. Her whole body was shivering; it was so cold she couldn't even feel her feet. Thirsty, she was thirsty. Her mouth was so dry swallowing hurt. Carefully, she opened her eyes, only to find out she was in complete darkness.
The drugs, she remembered the drugs. Her mind was still clouded, but she slowly started to remember what happened. Annie, the limousine, the chloroform, how they tried to get out of the car and suddenly… everything was black. Annie. What happened to her? Was she here with her?
"Annie?" Lisbon whispered, her voice hoarse. "Annie, are you here?" No answer.
She sat up, feeling for something to lean on. Nothing. She didn't know where she was, what she was doing here. The only thing she knew was that she was incredibly cold. Shivering, she put her hands under her armpits and began to rub. Jane had told her that it was more important to keep your torso warm instead of your shoulders in case of hypothermia. Cold, so cold.
She was still wearing her wedding dress, although she was sure she couldn't give it back now. It was probably ruined. Where was her coat? Someone must have taken it from her.
"Hello? Is anybody here? Hello?!" Whoever took her was either gone or ignoring her. If she had any light, she could try and check out the room, but like this…
"Help," she whispered, her face falling with every minute she had to sit in this dark hole and freeze. She didn't even realize she was crying until a hot tear dropped on her cool hand. Just then she felt she was still wearing her bracelet.
"Jane." It took her a moment to find Jane's ring dangling from it, but she took it and closed her fist around it. Jane would come and find her. He would save her. He was always going to save her; he'd promised. She just had to wait and hope it was not too late.
