Rin: Thank you for your patience! It's finally my turn to narrate!
Len: And the next chapter will be told from my point of view. Hope you enjoy it!
Rin and Len: Elise-sensei does not own Vocaloid; she just writes stories about us.
My eyes flew open as loud music was blasted into my ears. I sat up and saw a smug-looking Len sitting on the edge of my bed holding my mp3 player. Turning the music off, he then removed my headphones from my ears. "You've got to start setting an alarm clock," he commented.
"Who needs one with you around?" I retorted as I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. "Besides, I've tried that and I always slept through it." Apparently I'm not the easiest person to wake up, but Len's method almost always worked.
"Oh yeah," Len muttered. "Anyway, hurry up and get dressed. Breakfast is ready, and I've already made our lunches."
"Okay," I said as I stretched my arms and slipped out of bed. Of the two of us, my brother has always been the more responsible, and he's a much better cook than I am, so he makes a lot of our meals.
I looked to see my school uniform already laid out, so I got dressed, brushed my hair and applied my usual white hair ribbon. Len and I ate breakfast and then headed out the door.
Unfortunately, once we had exited the apartment building, we were stopped by several reporters who had apparently been waiting for us. "Kagamine twins! Any word on when your first album will be released?"
"We're still working on it," I answered with a smile. "But I think it will be released within the next couple of months."
"Until then, we're releasing a few singles before the album," Len added.
"Are Hatsune-san and Megurine-san awake yet?"
"Who knows?" Len answered, shrugging his shoulders. I guess even if they were awake, Len didn't want them to be bothered, especially Miku. Don't tell anyone, but he has a huge crush on her! "Now excuse us, we'll be late for school."
"Later!" I called as I took my brother's hand and the two of us dashed off toward the bus station, just managing to outrun the reporters by getting on the bus before it left. "Whoo! That was fun."
"Yeah, I love getting jumped by reporters first thing in the morning," Len said sarcastically, and I couldn't help giggling. "We've got to find an alternate route to school."
"Maybe we could ask Meiko-san or Kaito-san, they'll probably know," a voice suggested. We looked to see Luka, along with Miku, among the crowd. They must've been hiding in the crowd. All four of us laughed, somewhat relieved that we were all able to catch the bus.
But Luka was right: the two original Vocaloids knew the area better than we did, so they probably had a few hiding places and escape routes here and there.
The school day flew by and before we knew it, class was over and we were waiting outside for Miku and Luka. As we were waiting, a girl with curly red hair in pigtails dashed up to me. "Excuse me, you're Rin Kagamine-san, right?"
Figuring she was just another fan, I answered confidently, "Yes, I am."
"I knew it! I'm Teto Kasane!" she said excitedly. "We actually go to the same school, I'm just one grade higher than you," she added, pointing out her school uniform which was identical to mine. "Listen, I was wondering if you were free this Saturday? A bunch of girls from my class are going on a group date and we wanted you to join us."
"A group date? Me?!" I responded in surprise. Despite my tendency to get a crush on every cute guy I saw, I had never actually gone to a group date. It sounded like fun! "Um, sure! I'd love to- Oh, but I have to work at the studio until 3 pm. Is that okay?"
"Yeah, we can meet up when you're done!" Teto said quickly. "This is so great! I'll tell the other girls you're coming! See you Saturday!" And before I could say anything else, she took off.
I didn't say anything at first, and neither did Len, who had heard the whole conversation from right next to me. "…Wow, she sure was persistent. But Len, a group date! Can you believe it?!"
"Rin, you don't even know this girl," Len said strictly, folding his arms. "You don't even know what the guys are like."
"Um, duh! That's kinda the point of a group date, to meet a guy," I retorted, planting my hands on my hips. "I'm sure it'll be fine!"
"How can you be so sure?"
"Because I am! You're not Mom!"
"I'm your voice of reason and I'm older, that's close enough!"
"By two minutes! I'm not a little kid anymore!"
"It's a bad idea!"
"Nuh-uh!"
"Yeah-huh!"
"Alright, break it up!" a familiar voice said before both me and Len got hit upside the head with a rubber leek. Miku was standing right there, holding her weapon of choice for breaking up fights, and Luka was standing behind her. "Now what's going on, you two?"
Both Len and I started speaking at the same time. "I/Rin got invited to a group date on Saturday after work, but I don't/she doesn't know the girl very well or any of the guys, so Len thinks/I think it's a bad idea to go!" When we finished, we started glaring at each other again.
Miku and Luka just stared at us for a second before the pink-haired girl spoke up. "Um, could you run that by us again?"
Before I could say anything, Len covered my mouth. "To sum it up, Rin was invited to a group date by a sempai, but I don't think she should go. Ouch!" That would be me biting his hand, and he quickly pulled it back.
"C'mon, don't you guys think I'm old enough to go?" I asked the older girls with big eyes.
"I don't see the problem," Miku said with a shrug. "I think Rin-chan's old enough to try going to a group date."
"As long as there's no alcohol involved," Luka added.
Laughing, I replied, "Please, I don't even know how we'd get alcohol in the first place! We're middle-school students."
"You'd be surprised," I heard Len grumble. He seemed to be against it, no matter what.
"Len, don't make me go 'Daughter of Evil' on you!" I threatened. And let me pause the story for a second so you can understand. "Daughter of Evil" is a song from a small series called "the Evil Saga" that my brother and I are working on for our album. My role in the songs is a princess who is very mean and ruthless, while Len's role is the princess's twin brother and faithful servant. What I was basically saying was that if I had to, I would order Len to let me go.
"Forget it, princess, that's not gonna work on me," Len said firmly.
"Some servant you are!" I shouted at him, and of course my twin didn't flinch.
Miku hit us with the leek once again before turning to Len. "Len-kun, don't you think you're being a little hard on her? Rin-chan's never gone on a date before, so why don't you let her go?"
My brother's cheeks flushed a little, and he glanced away. "Er… Well, I uh… guess she can go…" See?! He's totally crushing on Miku; he's powerless when it comes to her!
"YES!" I cheered, jumping and punching the air victoriously.
Sighing loudly, Len muttered, "Very well… princess."
Luka chuckled. "Len-kun can't resist you yet again, Miku-san."
"Hmm? What'd you say?" the teal-haired girl asked, looking at Luka. As usual, Miku seemed completely oblivious to Len's feelings.
"Oh never mind, it's nothing," Luka replied, shaking her head. "C'mon, let's get to the studio."
As we were riding the bus to Crypton Records, Miku suddenly said, "Oh, I just remembered! I promised Meiko that I would make dinner for Kaito nii-chan tonight."
"You're kidding!" I exclaimed, eager for more information. "I heard Kaito-san got sick! How is he feeling?"
"Down girl, let her talk," Len said as he placed a hand on my shoulder. I couldn't help noticing a slight irritation in his tone. "How is he?"
"A little better, but he still can't come in to work," she answered. "I really hope Gumi-chan will let me off early today."
"I'm sure she'll understand," Luka ensured. "Gumi-san seems like a good person."
"Yeah, good luck!" I said cheerfully, although inside I was a little jealous. Kaito may be six years older than me, but he's so gorgeous! I've hardly gotten to see him since we became Vocaloids, but Miku's hung out with him several times already, calls him Kaito nii-chan, and was now taking care of him while he was sick. She's one lucky girl…
I glanced over at Len, and while he seemed okay, I could see the sadness in his eyes. He really likes Miku, but she's always bringing up Kaito, so I couldn't blame him for being jealous.
…
Aku no hana karen ni chiru (A flower of evil scatters pitiably)
Azayaka na irodori de (In the most brilliant colors.)
Nochi no hitobito wa kou kataru (Later on, people would talk about her this way)
Aa kanojo wa masa ni aku no musume ("Ah, she was truly a daughter of evil!")
"Okay Rin, I think we're done for the day. Good work!" Len announced over the speaker. Since we already knew our way around a recording studio, Gumi lets us make recordings together, just the two of us.
"Thanks!" Exiting the recording booth, I took a huge drink from my water bottle. "Ahhh, that hit the spot! So, any plans for dinner?"
"Oh, just thought I'd make some orange chicken," my brother suggested, winking at me.
"Don't think, do it!" I exclaimed excitedly. Needless to say, I'm a sucker for food with orange in it, even if it's just a sauce or flavor.
"Yes, your highness," Len said, bowing before we both laughed at his joke.
As we walked back to our apartment, I asked, "So does this mean you're not mad about the group date anymore?"
"Yeah, pretty much," Len answered with a shrug. "I guess I was just being a little… protective. You are my little sister, after all."
"Little, my eye. I'm only two minutes younger!" I protested.
"Alright, I'll rephrase that: you're my younger sister," Len offered with a teasing smile.
Folding my arms, I pouted, "You're never gonna let that go, are you?"
"Nope, never," my twin answered, shaking his head and grinning. "C'mon, I'll race you up the stairs!"
"You're on!" I shouted as we ran through the door to the apartment building and dashed up the stairs as fast as we could, laughing the whole way.
…
The next few days flew by and before I knew it, it was Saturday. Once again, Len woke me up via loud music, and we headed to the studio.
I was let off a little early so I could get ready for the group date, and soon enough I was out the door at exactly 3 pm. Looking around, I finally spotted three girls, all of them upperclassmen, walking over.
Teto spotted me and waved me down. "Kagamine-san, over here!"
Dashing over, I skidded to a stop in front of the girls. "Thanks for letting me come, Kasane-sempai!"
"Oh, it's no problem!" the redhead replied with a smile. "C'mon, we're meeting the boys at a restaurant down the way." And with that, the four of us were on our way. "Hope you like older boys, Kagamine-san. All the guys are from the high school next to our school."
"Sweet!" I exclaimed excitedly.
When we reached the restaurant, there were four pretty cute guys waiting for us. "Hey, thanks for waiting!" Teto greeted. "I brought Kagamine-san, just like I promised."
"Wow, she's even cuter in person!" one of the boys commented.
"I'm a big fan of yours!" another boy said.
The third boy looked over at Teto. "Teto-chan really came through!"
"Aw stop, you're making me blush!" the older girl said, covering her cheeks playfully.
Meanwhile, I was just trying to take this all in. Teto had promised to bring me? Was I the only reason most of these guys were here, because a famous girl like me would be coming?
"…mine-san? Kagamine-san!" I snapped out of my daze when someone tapped my shoulder. I turned to see the fourth boy. "Why don't you sit next to me?"
"Um, sure, why not?" I answered before quickly sitting down. I wanted to at least act like I knew what I was doing, even though at the moment I was having a hard time even thinking! Look, don't be nervous. This one seems nice, maybe you can talk to him. "So, uh… what's your name?"
"Piko Utatane," the boy answered with a small smile. He had silver hair that stopped just above his shoulders, pale skin, and his left eye was blue while the right one was green. "I'm fifteen years old and a freshman in high school. It's very nice to-"
"So Rin-chan, how are things in the world of showbiz?" another guy asked, cutting off Piko who looked a little annoyed.
Somewhat annoyed myself, I glared at him and said, "Um, excuse me? Kinda having a conversation here!" Despite his initial surprise, the guy backed off and started talking to another girl while I turned my attention back to Piko. "Nice to meet you too, Utatane-sempai."
After talking with Piko for a while, I learned a few things about him, like the rest of the boys had actually dragged him here under duress, which I couldn't help giggling at. He mentioned that he himself was a fairly good singer, and he occasionally performed in a local park. Every once in a while, one of the other guys would interrupt us for one reason or another, but I did my best to bounce back.
Later on, I realized that I was getting a bit of a headache. I wasn't quite sure what was causing it, but I quickly sat up and excused myself. "Um, sorry, I have to, uh… powder my nose," I said quickly before heading into the restroom. Powder my nose?! That was the best I could do?! I mentally scolded myself as I rubbed my temples.
I sighed as I leaned against the door of one of the stalls. As much as I hated to admit it, maybe the group date was a bit overwhelming. Sure, Piko was nice, but I didn't really know any of these guys, or even the girls. Maybe Len was right, I thought. I should've turned down Kasane-sempai when I had the chance. I pulled out my cell phone and decided to give Len a call.
I was somewhat relieved when I heard his voice on the other end. "Hey, it's Len."
"Hi Len, it's Rin," I answered, still rubbing my left temple.
"Oh hey, what's up?" he asked. "I thought you were at the group date."
"I'm in the restroom right now," I told him. "I… I'm starting to think that maybe this wasn't such a good idea. I swear, the reason most of the guys are here is so they could meet me, an up-and-coming pop star! It's ridiculous…" I let out another sigh before admitting one last thing. "And you were right, I should've waited before doing something like this."
There was silence on the other end, and suddenly I heard the restroom door opening. "Rin, you in here?" a familiar voice asked.
My eyes widened, and I opened the stall door to see Len standing there. "Wha-! Len?! Were you here the whole time?!"
"Yeah, I sort of followed you here," he admitted as I pushed him back out the door. We were still out of sight of the rest of my group, so we could talk safely. "I just wanted to make sure everything went well."
My face flushed, for some reason. I couldn't believe he was so worried that he followed me! "Well, uh… thanks for coming," I muttered, not having the energy to yell at him at that moment. "I wanna go home, Len. I've got a headache, but I don't want them to think I'm ditching them. What should I do?"
Len thought for a moment, then he seemed to have a light bulb moment. "We're about the same size, right?"
"Yeah, why do you ask?" I answered before realizing what he was talking about. "Are you suggesting we switch clothes?!" I whisper-shouted.
"We're twins, and I know your habits well enough that I should be able to fool them so they won't tell the difference," Len explained. "Don't worry, it'll be fine. I think I can handle a few guys," he finished with a grin.
I just looked at my brother for a few seconds before giving him a tight hug. "Len, you're an awesome brother!"
We slipped back in restroom (making sure nobody saw Len) and walked into the biggest stall so we could change clothes. I had to fix Len's hair a bit, and of course apply the same make-up I had, but by the time we were done, he looked exactly like me.
"Wow! I don't think they'll spot the difference at all!" I said happily. "Thank you so much, Len!"
"No problem," Len replied, pitching his voice so it sounded more like mine. Going back to his normal voice, he told me the rest of the plan. "Okay, I'm going out there. Just tell me who's who, and then you slip out the door, go back to the apartment and rest up. Can you do that?"
Nodding, I sent him a text telling him the names of the guys and the girls. "And if possible, could you maybe get Utatane-sempai's number? He seems like a nice guy."
"Y-Yeah, sure," Len said with a hint of nervousness before regaining his composure. "Wish me luck, princess," he said, bowing his head before exiting the restroom.
I wiped off my make-up before finally leaving the restaurant, and as I was walking, I glanced back. Len was the kind of brother who would do just about anything for me, even dress in drag. I smiled to myself, thinking how lucky I was to be his twin sister.
Next time…
Len: Refresh my memory: how did I get talked into this?
Rin: You said you would take my place, and I really appreciate it! Good luck!
Len: Wha-! Hey, Rin!
Piko: Kagamine-san, everything okay?
Len: Hoo boy…
Next time: Track 9 – Servant of Evil
