By the next morning, Rachel and Shelby had all of Rachel's things boxed up. They decided that when LeRoy joined them in the city, he would have Rachel's furniture and boxes shipped to their apartment. For now, they only packed a few of her outfits. Rachel was tired of her old animal print sweaters and pleated skirt and was ready to start dressing her age. After all, she was moving to New York; she needed to fit in with her age group. Plus, her mother is the one and only Shelby Corcoran. She didn't want to embarrass her by dressing like a toddler. Of course, Rachel hadn't told Shelby that was the reason, but nonetheless, Shelby had promised her a shopping trip once they got settled back in the city.
LeRoy drove the girls to the airport to catch their flight back to New York. After thanking Shelby again for helping him out, he hugged Rachel one last time and reassured her that he would join her soon.
"Mom, are you sure you are okay with me staying with you until Daddy gets here?" Rachel asked after they had found their seats.
Shelby reached over and grabbed her daughter's hand. "Of course, Rachel. I do not mind at all. I am extremely happy that we will get to spend some time together."
Rachel nodded and put her earphones in, laid her head on Shelby's shoulder, and drifted off into her thought. So much had happened in such a short period of time. She met her Broadway idol, who befriends her and wants to help her, then found out said idol was her birth mother who she was now moving to New York City to live with because her dads are getting a divorce. It was a lot for someone to take in at one time.
In no time the captain made the announcement that they had arrived in the City. Walking out of the airport, cameras began flashing like crazy. That's when it really hit Rachel. Her mother was Shelby Corcoran, the Broadway star.
"Shelby! Shelby! Over here! Who is this young girl with you? Shelby!" Shelby handled the paps with grace. She was polite but didn't answer any questions. She wanted to release the news of her daughter, after she got a chance to talk to LeRoy about the situation. She wanted to do it right, and not on some gossip website. Rachel stood back and watched her mom in awe. It was really overwhelming, but the shorter brunette decided that she needed to get used to it; after all, she was going to be famous one day.
Shelby's apartment was huge…bigger than Rachel could have ever imagined. There was a music room just off of the living room, three HUGE guest rooms and then Shelby's room with her own private bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub. Rachel could get used to this.
Shelby took her to the room right across the hall from her, and helped her unpack her suitcase. "We can go shopping in the next few days and redo this room, if you want. It is pretty plain right now, but I want you to have your own room, and I want it to be done the way you want it. I want you to be comfortable here, Rachel. Okay? Just make yourself at home."
Rachel sat down on the edge of her queen size bed, taking in the room. It was a pretty plain room, like Shelby said. The walls were white and there was hardly any color anywhere else. She connected eyes with Shelby and smiled. "Thanks, Mom. You know…for everything."
Shelby smiled at her daughter and sat down beside her. "I am so thankful that you wrote me that original letter, Rachel. I know it took a lot to share your story with someone that you didn't know personally. You took a chance on me, and I am so thankful that you did. Now I have the one thing I have always wanted, my baby."
"You saved me. Before I even knew you were my mother you saved me. You were the one who took the chance…not me. I could have been some lying, manipulating fan just looking for money or something crazy. You trusted me and believed me. I cannot thank you enough for that."
"I knew there was something special there the moment I saw you outside of the hotel. I knew that you were not lying to me. I felt something, I wasn't sure what, but I knew that I had to help you." Shelby pulled Rachel into her.
"I am so glad you did. I love you, Mom."
"I love you too, Baby. I think I am going to lay down for a while. Do you want to lay down as well?"
"No, I think I am going to start unpacking some of my personal items." Rachel said, getting up.
"Do you want some help?"
Rachel shook her head. "No thanks. Go lay down, it's okay."
Shelby nodded, kissed Rachel's forehead, and crashed on her bed.
Rachel grabbed her first bag and went into the bathroom attached to her bedroom. It was done in blues and greens. After putting everything in the proper place, something caught her eye. At the very bottom of the bag was something she had not seen in a while. A shiny, silver blade. She took it out carefully and held it in her hand. Looking at herself in the mirror and then back at the blade, she felt an urge that she hadn't had in quite some time come over her. She walked across the hall to make sure Shelby was asleep, which she was, before going back into her bathroom with a pair of black yoga pants and a long sleeve shirt. She continued to hold the blade in her hand as she climbed into the shower. Taking a deep breath, Rachel pressed the blade to her inner thigh and pulled it across the skin. It was light and quick but it did the job. The first beads of blood rose to the surface. Then she made another line, and then another. Before she knew it her entire leg was covered in tiny nicks. She wasn't bleeding badly, but the blood was there. That release she didn't know she needed was happening. She felt herself sigh as a single tear fell from her eyes. After finishing up in the shower, she climbed out, cleaned the cuts with peroxide and put some Neosporin on them. She got dressed and laid in her bed.
You are such an idiot, Rachel. She thought to herself. What was the point in that? You have exactly what you have always wanted. You are living with your mother in the city of your dreams. You are away from that horrible town and all of the bullies who call it home.
Do you really need a reason to cut though, Rachel? Another voice took over. Maybe you just needed some form of release. A lot has happened in the past few weeks. It's a lot for anyone to take in. You are okay. One relapse doesn't mean that you are a failure. You've got this.
Rachel heard Shelby moving around so she ran back into the bathroom where she left her blade soaking in the peroxide so it would be clean next go around. She grabbed the blade and placed it inside of the bag where she found it and put the bag under her sink. When she walked out of the bathroom, Shelby was sitting on her bed.
"Hey, honey. Did you get it all done?"
"Just about. Sleep well?" Rachel responded, putting up a picture of her and LeRoy next to a picture of her and Kurt.
"Yes. I was so tired. It has been an emotional past couple of days."
"Tell me about it."
"What do you say we order in tonight and get to know one another?"
"Sure, that sounds great."
An hour or so later, the girls were curled up on separate ends of the couch, facing each other. They had just finished their dinner and were playing 20 questions.
"Favorite color?" Shelby started off.
"Gold. You?"
"Deep purple."
"Go to Karaoke song?"
"Proud Mary."
"Mine is Give Your Heart a Break by Demi Lovato."
"I love Demi. Her range is phenomenal. So we know our favorite movie is Funny Girl. How about biggest dream, not Broadway related."
"To make a difference in someone's life."
"Awe, sweetie, you made a difference in mine. Even before I knew who you really were. You touched my heart. Mine has already happened. It was to meet my daughter."
"Awe. Let's get a little deeper. Biggest fear?" Rachel wasn't sure if there were any boundaries in getting to know her mom, so she went for it.
"Losing you. Honestly. Before I met you, I would probably have said losing everything I have worked so hard for, but you have showed me that none of that matters. It is all materialistic things."
"Mine is…" Rachel trailed off, looking down at her hands folded in her lap. "Mine is not being enough for you. My whole life everyone has either bullied me or left me. I've never been enough for anyone." She met her mother's green eyes.
"Oh baby," Shelby moved closer to Rachel. "You will always be enough for me. There is nothing you could do to ever make me leave you. Now that I have you, I would be stupid to let you go again."
"You mean that?"
"With every bit of my heart."
"How can you love me so much? You just met me." Rachel had to ask. It was true, technically they just met.
"I have always loved you. I always thought about you and wondered what you were like. Every city I would go to, I would look for some clue that you had found me. But it never came. But I have loved you from the moment I found out I was pregnant with you and NOTHING will ever change that. Do you understand me?" Shelby lifted Rachel's chin so the young girl was looking her in her eyes.
"I do understand. I love you too. I have always loved you too. And not just because you are my idol, but because you are my mom." Rachel wrapped her arms around her mother's neck and climbed into her lap, burying her face in the crook of her mom's neck. Shelby held on to her baby as tears began to fill her eyes. She finally had everything in the world she could ever want, sitting in her lap.
They stayed like that for the longest time, just holding each other. Finally, they decided that it was time to head to bed. Shelby tucked Rachel in and kissed her goodnight. When she got to the doorway, she heard Rachel call out for her.
"Yes, baby?"
"Will you sing to me?" Shelby's heart fluttered.
"Of course." She climbed in the bed with Rachel and began to sing.
For you, there'll be no more crying.
For you, the sun will be shining.
And I feel that when I'm with you,
It's alright, I know it's right.
To you, I'll give the world.
To you, I'll never be cold.
'Cause I feel that when I'm with you,
It's alright, I know it's right.
And the songbirds are singing, like they know the score.
And I love you, I love you, I love you, like never before.
And I wish you all the love in the world.
But most of all, I wish it from myself.
And the songbirds keep singing, like they know the score
And I love you, I love you, I love you
Like never before, like never before, like never before.
By the end of the song, Rachel was knocked out. Shelby kissed her forehead gently and left the room. In her room, Shelby picked up her phone and dialed the one person, she just had to tell this too.
"Hey You." Shelby said as the person picked up.
"How ya doing, Shelbs?" Cassandra July's voice came over the phone.
