A/N: Sorry this took too long. I am seriously gonna start to try updating every story every week. I put a lot on my plate, but I will work harder to make sure everything gets out a little quicker. I appreciate everyone sticking with me on these stories even though my updates are so freaking slow. Thank you! So I hope you enjoy this chapter. It's a little different I think. It was a hard chapter to get out because I had a few options and this one provided more chances for me to write for Sarah and Ryleigh. :) So I hope you don't mind the scenario I chose. I was going to lean more towards Trevor being an ass and trying to force Sarah to do something she didn't want to do, but opted to change it up and make the situation simpler to deal with. Please do enjoy it.
Warning: Bullying and name calling. But overall, I think in the end the message and family time is sweet.
Helena was driving home, constantly looking in the rear view mirror to check on the girls. Each minute that passed by, the girls moved closer to each other until Sarah's head was resting on Ryleigh's shoulder. Helena noted the closeness and the way that Ryleigh had been comforting her daughter even though she observed the puffiness of the girls eyes; evidence that she had also been crying.
"Mum?" Sarah met her mothers eyes in the mirror just as Myka reached across the middle of the car and held onto the Brits hand.
"We can talk when we get home. We're almost there." Helena said calmly, trying to stay focused on driving and wishing she had taken Myka up on her offer to drive. Her hands were shaking, even the one covered by her wife's comforting grip. She just breathed deep, hoping that the scenario running through her mind wasn't what actually happened.
They pulled up to the B&B, everyone was awake and waiting for them. Claudia and Jinks were on the porch with mugs filled with coffee resting on their laps. They both jumped up when Helena put the car into park.
"You guys okay?" Claudia ran down the stairs and opened the door for Myka, then Sarah while Jinks mirrored her and did the same for Helena and Ryleigh. They all went inside and after assuring everyone that the girls were safe; they all went back to what they were doing as Myka and Helena sat the girls down in the living room to talk. Claudia, Jinks and Pete decided to hang out in the kitchen just in case they were needed.
"So who wants to start?" Myka handed the girls some hot chocolate, and sat next to Helena as she handed her a cup of tea.
Ryleigh squeezed Sarah's hand and looked at her, but she could tell that her friend wasn't ready to talk. "We were at the dance and..." She didn't know how much to say, it was mostly Sarah's story to tell.
"It's okay sweetie, you can tell us." Myka nodded and smiled reassuringly.
"Um... I went by myself to the dance and I was just standing on the side, watching everyone else having a good time. I think Sarah was dancing with Trevor..." Ryleigh looked at Sarah again and gave her a look that said 'you're turn.'
"I was dancing with Trevor and he asked if I wanted to go walk around with him outside." Sarah started to breathe a little faster, her heart racing as she tried to tell her parents what happened. "He... we went to the football field."
Helena's hands were clenched in fists as she took in every detail of her daughters physical appearance. She saw small grass stains on her dress just around her knees and noticed that her hair was a little messier than it should be. "What happened?"
"He didn't really do anything wrong. We were sitting on the bleachers and he leaned over and kissed my cheek. It was sweet. I looked at him and I let him kiss me on the lips." Sarah looked at Ryleigh almost apologetically. "I think... I don't know what happened, but I freaked out because it wasn't right. I didn't feel right kissing him so I got up and ran. When I got down to the bottom of the bleachers I fell on the grass. Trevor helped me up and we walked back to the dance together."
"So Trevor didn't hurt you?" Myka's hand was wrapped lightly around Helena's wrist, her thumb coaxing her wife's hands to relax.
"No. He was so nice about it. He said it was okay, and we went back to the dance and just sat there for a while. I saw Ryleigh standing there alone and I told Trevor I was gonna say hi. He said okay and went over to his friends. Ryleigh and I were talking against the wall for a while and I started to feel a lot better and..."
"She asked me if I wanted to dance." Ryleigh cut in smiling. "Sarah noticed how bored I was and asked me if I wanted to dance with her. We've danced together before so it wasn't a big deal, a lot of girls were dancing together."
"So you were dancing together and...?" Helena was finally starting to relax but she was still very curious.
"Mum... while we were dancing I told Sarah that Trevor and I kissed and I told her how I felt about it. She hugged me and that's when Trevor's friends came over. They were all talking to him, telling him that he should keep an eye on me and shorten the leash before I run off with someone else. They were being so cruel and laughing. He wasn't laughing, but he didn't tell them to stop."
"Mrs. Bering-Wells, one of the boys pulled Sarah away from me."
"Did he hurt you?"
"No mum... not physically. I would have broken all of his fingers if he did."
"That's my girl." Helena said with pride.
"Sarah shook him off and stood by me. She took my hand and we started to walk out of the dance but they were following us. They kept talking about us being gay... about..." Ryleigh felt Sarah tense and saw her hide her face in her hand. "About you guys and your lifestyle. They were telling Trevor that he should have known better and he should have known that Sarah was um... a... that she was a..."
"A dyke." Sarah closed her eyes, jaw clenched tight. "Like mother's like daughter." Tears started to well up in Sarah's eyes.
"Darling..." Helena stood up, ready to drive right back to the dance and give those boys a piece of her mind.
"Don't worry mum. I broke his nose... and he might never be able to reproduce."
"She kicked him in the nuts... hard." Ryleigh and Sarah smirked at each other. "But we had to get out of there and that's when Sarah used my phone to call you guys."
"I think the principal might call tomorrow."
"We'll worry about that later love. Who was the boy? You said it wasn't Trevor."
"His name is Evan. I'm sure his parents will be calling too. I'm so sorry..." Sarah was so afraid of disappointing her mothers that she was scared of what her actions may cost them.
"Sarah you didn't do anything wrong. You reacted to what was happening and those boys are to blame because they were bullying you two. You... you stood up for yourself so we are gonna stand by you through this whole thing. We don't care what the boys parents say or what your principal has to say. What that boy called you..."
"I know mom. It wasn't just that though. I think I was more upset that Ryleigh was caught in the middle too and she didn't deserve it. We had talked about some things while we waited for you guys and I think... I think it would have been a better first dance if I had gone with her instead." Sarah blurted out, realizing how much it sounded like a coming out declaration.
Claudia's head popped out through the door separating the kitchen from the living room and smiled. When she looked back at the two guys sitting there mouths open wide she mouthed 'I knew it.'
"Hey Ryleigh, why don't you go upstairs and wash up, I'll call your parents and let them know that I'm gonna be bringing you home okay?" Ryleigh nodded and stood up. "Sarah, go get Ryleigh something that she can change into." Sarah said okay and ran home to get some extra clothes.
As soon as the girls were out of ear shot, Claudia, Pete and Jinks ran into the living room. "I knew it! I told you and I told you! Pay up!" Claudia couldn't stop laughing as the guys shook their head bewildered. "Come on! I can't believe you guys didn't see it coming I mean..." She waved her arms in Helena and Myka's direction. Both women rolled their eyes and Myka walked away already dialing Ryleigh's moms number.
...
After getting Ryleigh home, Helena and Myka got Sarah to get to bed. It took a while, but she finally settled down after Helena read to her for almost an hour.
When they collapsed in bed, Helena instantly curled into Myka's side. "Our daughter has a girlfriend. I knew it."
"Really? That's what you're thinking about? Because I'm thinking about that idiot Evan and that bigger idiot Trevor. I can't believe he let that happen to our daughter. I mean, he just came to dinner and he was so sweet to her. Even if he learned tonight that she didn't want to be his girlfriend, he should have still been a good friend and stood up for her!"
"He was probably jealous and upset about Sarah's reaction to their kiss, and he also probably didn't know how to react to his friends. I mean, the way Sarah and Ryleigh talked about it; it sounded like he was also being bullied by those boys. Or at least taunted a little."
"You're defending him?"
"Trust me love, I would like nothing more than to show him how stupid he and his friends were by causing them a lot of pain for how they hurt our baby, but they were just being stupid kids. Think about it, when Sarah and Ryleigh were in that fight with each other, Ryleigh's mum could have pressed charges but you essentially told her that kids will be kids."
Myka was about to argue, but Sarah was knocking on the door. "Can I come in?"
Helena sat up in her wife's arms. "Of course darling."
Sarah ran to her mothers bed and jumped between them, snuggling close.
"You okay baby?" Myka kissed her daughters forehead.
Sarah shook her head and really started to cry. She let all her feelings finally escape her through tears. "It really sucks." She buried herself deeper into her moms embrace. "Is it always gonna be this hard?"
"Maybe. Just know that the people who matter most; your family... we all love you so much just the way you are. Don't ever doubt that. You can always be who you are with us."
"Darling, someday in your lifetime, I truly do believe that things like this; who you choose to love and what gender they are won't matter anymore." Helena rubbed her daughters back and watched her close her eyes. "Until that day comes, we will always be here for you." Helena and Myka shared a look over their daughters sleeping form.
"I love you guys."
"We love you."
Sorry this chapter was so short. I will try to make it up to you in the next few. I know people liked the Sarah Ryleigh chemistry so I wanted to open the story up and give them the chance to give it a go. Please comment and review. I really appreciate the feedback so anything will do. I hate putting out things that are half ass, but I couldn't really wrap my head around this chapter so I did the best I could and I hope you liked it. Love you all. XO
