having an unreliable connection really sucks guys. sorry about the delay; I put this up as soon as I could. I will try my best to have another chapter for you tonight!
Jane could hear nothing else but the rapid pounding of her heart; she felt each beat in her ears so loud she thought her eardrums might burst but she didn't care. She hadn't even bothered with the elevator and had run down the flights of stairs rushing to the main entrance as fast as her legs could carry her.
"Get out of the way; move!" Frost yelled at the guards blocking the metal detectors as he ran, inches behind Jane. She gave a small sigh in relief when she realized that he had followed her out.
The sun blinded her for a second, getting her in a daze while her eyes adjusted to the light. Still, that didn't stop her and she continued onwards towards the parked unmarked. They were still too far away; she was still too far away. She reached for her weapon only to realize it was still being held inside the building.
"Fuck!" she yelled in frustration.
Quickly looking around, she didn't see anything out of the ordinary as the unmarked sedan finally came into view. The tint was too dark; she couldn't see inside it. Was Maura in there?
"Maura?! MAURA?!" she yelled as she got closer. She saw the slightest shift and movement inside the car. "DON'T GET OUT, STAY IN THE CAR!" Two more seconds passed and she was finally at the front passenger's door.
Maura looked startled to say the least. She looked at Jane, who was breathing heavily, eyes frantic and worrisome.
"What's the matter, Jane? What's wrong?" she asked immediately.
"Are you alright?!" Jane asked as she looked Maura over for any signs of distress.
"Yes, of course I'm alright; I've just been sitting here waiting for you. Will you please tell me what's wrong?" Worry laced her voice.
Relief washed over the detective, if only momentarily. Maura was alright; Jane knew she had to keep her safe. She looked over to Frost, who had been keeping a lookout of their surroundings.
"It's clear Jane," he provided, wanting to help calm his partner down.
"Will you two please tell me what is going on?!" Maura raised her voice.
"It's Hoyt; I'll explain Maura just give me a minute." Jane looked at her partner. "Frost, get your weapon; I need a favor."
"I got you Jane," he replied as he started his way back inside for his gun.
Jane turned to Maura. She didn't know just how much she should say; Maura was now in danger and it was her fault. The more she thought it over the more she convinced herself that Maura needed full disclosure; she was her girlfriend and deserved nothing but the truth.
"It's Hoyt, Maur. We were interrogating him as you know. He didn't say a word, just kept playing us. Just as he was about to leave, I noticed there was something different about his breast pocket. When I examined it, I found a photograph; it was of you, alone and going into the house."
Maura covered her mouth, holding half of her gasp in. "Oh my God," she said as the news Jane was giving her sunk in.
"I don't know if that sick son of a bitch is just playing me, but either way, you are in danger." She had kneeled in front of Maura and put her hands on Maura's shoulders. "I'm not letting anything happen to you Maura, do you hear me? I will do anything to keep you safe!"
"What do I do Jane?" Maura asked, voice tremulous.
"I'm going to take care of it, ok?" Jane now held Maura's hands in hers, wanting to make the blonde feel reassured.
Maura nodded as tears filled her eyes. "I want you safe too Jane. My safety is the last thing on my mind if you're not safe too."
"We're going to be ok," Jane replied. She waited a few seconds before speaking again. "Maura, I need to go back in there. I need to face Hoyt again and get answers. New restrictions need to be set. I have no idea how he managed to get that photograph of you, and he needs to be dealt with." Frost had just made his way back to the car. Jane made eye contact with him and he gave her a quick nod. "Frost is going to get you out of here. He's going to take you back to the precinct; you're going to be safe there. Do not go anywhere else Maura, ok? Please, just stay there until I get back and we can go from there."
Maura nodded her assent. "I'll wait for you Jane; just please be careful. This man is much more dangerous than I thought."
"I'll be alright Maur; Korsak is staying with me," she tried to give the blonde a wink to make her feel more at ease. I'm going to take care of this. I'm going to catch whoever is responsible and make them rot in jail along with Hoyt for the rest of their miserable lives." She leaned in and gave Maura a kiss before embracing her tight. "I love you Maura. I love you so much, and I'll see you soon."
"I love you too, Jane; with everything I have and everything I am."
Jane gave Maura one final squeeze before letting go and standing up to full height. "Head back to the precinct and don't let her out of your sight. Korsak and I will get back there as soon as we can."
"Don't worry Jane; I'll take care of her," Frost said as he looked at his partner straight in the eyes.
Jane gave him a small smile. "I know you will. I owe you one. Let me know when you guys make it back." she said as she placed her hand on his shoulder and gave it a small squeeze.
"You don't owe me anything. We're family, and we always do everything in our power to keep each other safe. Be careful, and I'll see you back at the precinct. I'll send you a text when we arrive."
"Thanks, Frost."
Frost gave her a nod before he got into the car. He sped away with Maura safe inside seconds later. Jane took a minute to regain composure and calm herself down. The sun beat down on her face as she closed her eyes and practiced the breathing techniques Maura had taught her so many times. She knew she had to get a hold of herself before going back in there. Right now there was nothing she wanted more than to get her gun and shoot the son of a bitch who was probably sitting there, having a good laugh. Still, she needed answers, and she was stopping at nothing to get them. She turned around and quickly made her way back inside.
Maura is safe for now... will she stay that way? Let me hear it!
