"Is everything ok? Is Maura alright?" Korsak asked Jane the second he saw her walk in.
"She's ok; Frost is taking her back to headquarters until we get back. Did you see the photo?"
Korsak nodded solemnly.
"We aren't going to get anywhere with this son of a bitch under the warden's eye. How did that photo get to him, huh? He must have a guard as an accomplice. We can trust anyone here Vince. Where is he?"
"He's still in the room," Korsak answered.
"I wish I could just walk in there and beat the answers out of him," Jane growled. "What I really want to do I'm not able to… not here. Let's head back to the station; I have a plan," she said to a nodding Korsak.
Much to the gang's dismay, their plan of action would have to wait until the following day. Cavanaugh had called the governor himself to no avail since the man had been traveling and had been impossible to reach. There was nothing they could do; they would have to sit tight and play it as safe as they could.
Maura had waited for Jane until the detective had finished trying to get her plan in action. She'd sat in the café with Angela and Frankie by her side. Jane had spoken to Maura for a couple of minutes, making sure she was alright, before heading up to homicide to speak with Cavanaugh. Now that there was nothing left to do but wait, Jane had requested the rest of the day to regroup and arrange protection for her girlfriend; Cavanaugh had readily agreed.
"I really don't think this is going to be necessary Jane," Maura stated as they exited the car. They'd driven home and were now heading up the drive and towards the house. A patrol car was parked just outside the driveway with two uniforms inside; another car would be patrolling the area.
"Maura, after what happened with Hoyt this afternoon, there is no way I'm leaving you alone. It's just an extra precaution." They entered the house and Jane went directly to the fridge for a bottle of beer and some wine for Maura. "The guys are going to do their patrol for any suspicious activity. I am going to take you to and from work and there will be a guard with you at all times. Believe me, if I could do it myself, I would. If there was a way I could just keep you in a safe place until this is over, I would do it… but I know you have to work and I have to bring Hoyt to justice. Please, just be patient with me. We are going to get to the bottom of this, and then everything can go back to normal. Trust me with this, please?" Jane pleaded as she held onto Maura's hands.
"Of course I trust you Jane," Maura replied, unable to say more.
As promised, Jane dropped Maura off at work the following morning and made sure she was safe inside the building before heading to work herself. Maura had walked in through the ER and was making her way to her office when Susie Chang came up to her.
"Dr. Isles?" Susie called out to her favorite attending.
"Yes Susie, what is it?"
"I just wanted to inform you of the changes to the OR rotation that are taking place today. I know you don't like to be caught off guard."
"Changes? What changes?" Maura asked instantly.
"Apparently your regular anesthesiologist, Dr. Ferrier was called into another surgery so the new guy is filling in."
"The new guy?" Maura questioned yet again.
"Yes, a Dr. Yost. He's only been on staff for the last three weeks or so. From what I've heard from other attendings and residents, he is quite exceptional. I don't foresee any problems for you but I just wanted to keep you informed."
"Ah, I see. Thanks for letting me know Susie. I'm going to change and then we can go do our rounds before our first surgery of the day."
"Yes Dr. Isles," Susie nodded before going to get charts and everything ready for their morning rounds.
It was several hours before Jane finally got the break she'd been waiting for. It was right before noon when she, along with Frost and Korsak, walked into an interrogation room. Two armed police officers flanked Hoyt on either side. He was bound to a chair by arms and legs, his eyes were covered. Jane gave a nod to the officer to the right and he pulled off Hoyt's blindfold.
"Why Jane… I was hoping to see you again, I just never thought it would be so soon!" Hoyt sneered. Jane was having none of that.
"Uncuff him and leave us," she ordered the guards. The two men looked at one another in confusion.
"Did you not understand what I just said?" Jane asked, voice firmer than before. "Uncuff him!" The two guards quickly did as they were told. They untied Hoyt's hands and feet before turning and heading out the door. Jane waited a half a second while Korsak turned off the recordings and Frost blocked the door. One second she was standing in front of Hoyt, the other she had him by the collar and was slamming him against the nearest wall.
"Alright you fucking son of a bitch! You wanted my attention?! You have it! How did you get a hold of that photo?!" She held onto the front of his collar tightly. Hoyt did nothing but smile at her, taunting her. She lowered him to the ground before slamming him against the wall once more. "ANSWER ME!"
"Now Jane, where are your manners? I thought you were a lady," Hoyt replied, clearly enjoying the show.
"I don't give a fuck what you think of me Hoyt. I do care about Maura, and want to know how and why you have that photo of her!"
Hoyt closed his eyes and shook his head to the sides in a disappointed manner. "No no Jane. You see? You're going about this all wrong…"
"How am I supposed to go about it then?! How did you get that photograph?! Who took it?! Who is your apprentice?! How do you get connections to the outside?" Each question brought again another slam against the way for Hoyt. Jane's hands were on fire and aching but she would be damned if she let that stop her."Who's working for you?!" She put pressure on his neck and kept him against the wall.
There was a brief knock on the door, which Jane ignored. Another detective came into the room and pulled Frost aside. The detective left seconds later, leaving the original three and Hoyt alone once more.
"Jane," Frost called out almost immediately.
"Not now Frost," Jane muttered, trying to get Hoyt to talk.
"Jane!" The urgency in his tone made Jane turn and look right at him.
"The guard that was at the hospital is dead. Maura is missing."
Where do we go from here?
