Chapter 16
Nihrem groaned in pain as she pressed a cold bottle of mead to her forehead, trying to be as still as possible so her throbbing head wouldn't protest. Farkas was kneeling besides the bench she was laying down with a guilty face, his hand lightly caressing her hair in a comforting way.
"Show us again Farkas, what an amazing roof climber you are!"
Farkas ignored his brother's words, preferring to stay besides Nihren to make sure she was alright. Looking from under his arm, Nihren gave the best glare she could to Vilkas, but the effects of it were totally lost by the fact that the group of drunken Companions weren't looking at them, being too engrossed at Vilkas re-telling of the afternoon accident.
Due to a strong rain past night, the roof of Jovaskr had been damaged and Farkas had offered himself to fix it by saying he had already done that once and that he knew what he was doing (which was the truth, after all he had fixed their house's roof once).
Of course, the others thought that that was a lie, and that was something he was just making up in order to look good. Nihren couldn't help but think at that how little did they knew Farkas. Anyone who actually knew him would know that he wasn't the type to brag, but even Vilkas was doubting and so Nihren remained quiet, thinking it was just him teasing Farkas again.
But them, as he climbed the roof under the mocking voices of their friends, one of the shingles gave away under his foot, probably due to the old age, and he slipped down the roof falling precisely on top of Nihren. She had ended up with a horrible headache and him with a few bruised ribs and a broken pride.
And now, the others members of the companions were having the night of their lives mimicking him falling down and laughing at him.
Since the moment Nihren had woken up until now, Farkas had been sitting besides her with the most guilty and ashamed look on his face, not even trying to defend himself from the others mockery.
Nihren closed her eyes, taking a deep breath and trying not to kill someone. She never liked when others made fun of Farkas and now, combined with the monster headache she was having, she felt as if she was about to explode.
She wanted to go over there and smash their heads together until they stopped laughing, but right now, if she could make the world stop spinning around her she would be satisfied.
" Hey Ice brain, tell us something, since when going up to the roof to fix it means putting another hole in it?!"
As a new roll of laughter started, Nihren clenched her teeth groaning. The bottle of mead was already warm and staying laying down was only making her more nauseous. She pushed herself up, feeling Farkas hands helping her up and his eyes never leaving her face. She was sure he must have been in pain too, she didn't believe him when he said he had only had a few bruised ribs. Giving him a weak smile, she motioned for him to bring her a bucked just in case.
" Hey, roof climber! Should we start spreading the word of your new profession? Or does your fame is already known?"
Nihren closed her eyes taking deep breaths, trying to control her anger and the spinning world around her. Farkas appeared besides her again, putting the bucket between her knees and started to caress her back, ready to hold her hair if needed.
They said something else which she didn't ear, but by Farkas' face she was sure it wasn't anything good. Swallowing the bile on her throat, she said with whatever strength she could manage: " Stop it."
Which turned out to be not very much. Aela seemed have to heard her and stayed quiet, but apparently Vilkas didn't heard as he continued to laugh with the others.
He stopped laughing when a dagger burrowed itself centimeters from his face at the wood pillar behind him and as Nihren shouted forward, throwing the small table where their mead rested, out of her way so they could stay face to face, one of her hands landing on the dagger's hold and the other at the other side of his face.
He flinched at the sudden attack, his hand going for the hilt of his sword, but he stopped at the close proximity of his attacker.
" You shall not say another word about my husband. He was doing you a favor by going up there to fix your roof, and all he got for almost breaking his neck are your mocking words and contempt. If you are making fun of him, does that means that you knows how to fix it?"
She snarled at his face while looking to his eyes with anger and waiting for him to answer, when none came she gave him a smile, which looked more like a real snarl, and backed away a little, pulling the dagger from the wood.
" As I thought. You are only useful for emptying our mead and fornicating with whores."
Anger burned at Vilkas eyes and he raised his fist to punch her. At that distance Nihren wouldn't be able to block, and with her wobbly legs she wouldn't be able to dodge, so she ready herself to take the punch, hopping he would go for her body and not her face. Her head couldn't withstand another blow.
The punch never came, and as she opened her eyes, she saw Farkas standing beside her, holding his brother's fist with a determined look.
" Don't do something you will regret, brother."
At his words Vilkas' anger faded and he let his arms fall besides him. Letting out the breath she hadn't seem she had been holding, Nihren felt something coming up, and before she could stop it, she threw up at Vilkas chest.
Immediately, Farkas was besides her, not caring if his clothes got dirty and taking her hair out of the way. He pulled her to the bench she was laying before, and handed her the bucket so she could finish emptying her stomach.
When she was done, he carefully took her to their home so she could rest, not even caring for the mess she had made at his brother.
After he cleaned her up and removed her clothes, he gave her a healing potion and put her under the covers, caressing her hair until she was feeling less dizzy.
" You know, I don't think I have ever seen Vilkas's face as startled as that." He said with a chuckle as he laid down besides her.
" Heh, yeah, he wasn't waiting for that one..." Nihren chuckled without opening her eyes, simply enjoying his touch.
He turned his face to her, taking in her pale complexion and more relaxed posture.
" I didn't knew you were that protective of me."
Nihren's cheeks burned, she didn't used to think she was protective of him, but that had just proved her how wrong she had been. Farkas was a grown man and a nord. Most of the nords didn't like their wives preening on them.
" Ah... About that, I'm sorry..." Her cheeks were still burning and she felt like an idiot. All that was probably their normal teasing. Farkas hadn't acted on it because it probably didn't affected him. He had grown up with those people, and all his life he had been teased by them, so he probably didn't mind it. And there she was, overreacting and threatening her own brother-in-law with a dagger. By the gods...
She was startle from her guilty with Farkas burring his face at her neck and purring at her ear with that low voice she loved, as his hands went to caress her hips in hunger.
" I like it."
Oh, this man was going to be her destruction. She couldn't help but think so as he made promises about all the amazing things he would do to her after she was feeling better.
