Chapter 17
Aela was sitting outside Jorvaskr, enjoying the evening breeze while she sharpened her sword when Farkas arrived. It wasn't rare to see him around, much less by nightfall if his beloved wife wasn't home. Apparently he didn't have much to do at home without her. Chuckling at the thought, she welcomed her shield- brother.
And apparently Aela's skill at sneaking had improved, because Farkas looked over at her with a startle look, which quickly changed to one of happiness. Moving closer, he sat down across the table and gave Aela a smile.
" So, Aela, you are a woman..."
Frowning, Aela put down her sword and turned to look at him.
" What gave it away, ice brain?"
Seeming confused at her answer, Farkas opened his mouth, searching for words to some way to continue the conversation he was obviously trying to start. Feeling pity for his struggle, she sighed, and motioned for him to continue, turning back to her sword.
"How can I help you brother?"
"Well, I was wondering, what kind if present women like."
Sighing, once again she put her sword down and turned to Farkas with a frown.
" What have you done, and how mad is Nihren with you?"
Farkas blinked in confusion, before looking at her in disbelief. " I haven't done nothing! And Nihren isn't mad with me... I think..."
She squeezed her eyes in suspicion, trying to make him spill his secrets to her as he used to do when they were younger, all the while wondering what were his motivations. Looking away, Farkas answered with burning cheeks. Aela's look always made him feel as if he had been caught doing something wrong
"It's nothing really. It's just... Our wedding anniversary is coming and I-I wanted to give something to Nihren..."
Oh, so it was a love advice he wanted. It was expected, really. She still remembered the first time he had come to her, asking what was the best way to woo a girl's heart, and up till today Ysolda still gave her ugly looks when their crossed paths. It wasn't Aela's fault that her fist found the girl's nose, after she broke Farkas' heart.
Holding back a smile, she kept starring Farkas' face, enjoying the way he started to squirm under her stare.
" Fair enough. I suppose I can help you once, but don't make this a habit."
At her acceptance, Farkas smiled and sat up straight.
"So, what were your ideas?"
His blank look was all Aela needed to reach the conclusion that this was going to be harder than she thought. Rubbing her forehead, she sighed.
" Have you considered some trinket? A necklace? A ring?"
Farkas frowned again, looking down at the wood table.
" I did but, I don't think I can find one good enough here in Whiterun. They all seems too simple. "
" Heh, don't let old Eorlund hear you saying that... How about clothes?"
"Nah, she just bought a dress, I don't think she needs another."
" New shoes?"
"No"
" A hand mirror?"
"No"
" Some berries coloring for her lips?"
"No"
Grunting, Aela looked away, searching for something else.
" A sword?"
" She already have one."
" New armor?"
"uhm... No"
" A new horse?"
" We don't have that much money"
" A carpet for the house?"
"No, I think she is allergic to those"
" Flowers?"
" Flowers? Why?"
" Well, some women do like to receive flowers..."
"Uhm... No..."
" Urg! Do you at least have some idea of what you want?"
" Well, I wanted to give her something... Romantic?" His cheeks blushed again, and he looked down at the palm of his hands. " Although I don't say this much, I think Nihren is one of the best things that have ever happened to me, and, after all that we have been through, I wanted to give her something that she could look and understand that, you know?"
Aela gave him a small smile, Farkas could have a frozen brain, but no one could say the same thing about his heart. She knew how impressed and happy he had been when Nihren had asked him to marry her, and also how the last few months had been devastating to both of them. At the beginning she had resented Nihren for having stolen her "younger brother's" heart, but now she could see the love on their face's when they were together, and she would go out of her way in order to protect their happiness.
Chuckling, she raised her hand giving Farkas' head a weak hit. " Heh, you ice brain. Can't you see, as long as you get her anything, Nihren will be happy. Actually, knowing her, as long as you tell her you love her, she will be over the clouds in happiness."
Farkas didn't seemed convinced as he continued staring down at the table with a frown. Huffing a breath, Aela bit down her lower lip thinking in something acceptable.
There were many options of presents, but Farkas wanted something with meaning...
" Well, there is something that she might like... It's an very old tradition. I think it was something my grandma used to tell me her parents used to do..."
Oh, how his eyes shined at those words. The poor fool probably didn't even know how deep in love he was.
"Well, you will need wood, a sharp knife, bee wax and patience. A lot of it."
-
Nihren smiled as she walked home carrying the ingredients for supper. Today was a especial day for her husband and her, and she wanted to outdo herself for dinner. The meat was already on the fire, being roasted to perfection with herbs and others seasonings; the bread was almost done if the smell was right and the mead was warm. Now, she just had to finish the side food and take a bath and she would be ready!
She still remembered one of her parents weeding anniversary, were her mother had cooked so much food that Nihren and her brother almost died from trying to eat it all. For some reason they used to think that no food could be left for tomorrow, probably because their mother would make some of those horrible stews of her with the remains. She missed those old days where things were simple and all she had to worry about was to eat and not how to make the gold coins become food for all the month. Not that she and Farkas were going through difficulties, oh no! Actually they were even saving more gold for buying a house at Windhelm. But Nihren did had to admit she liked to spend their gold in useless things...
Or maybe not so useless.
She hold back a smirk when her thoughts went for the presents she had gotten to Farkas. It weren't anything too great, and she had to admit she had other reasons for buying them, but still she hoped he would like it.
By nightfall Farkas came in, wearing his best clothes, and Nihren had to stifle a chuckle at how uncomfortable he looked with his shirt inside his pants and his hair combed back. There was a wood box with a bow at his hands, and he seemed to consider if he should give it to her now or later.
Not being one know for his patience, he extended his arm, handing her the box while his cheeks started to burn.
Nihren opened the box carefully. Inside of it were two wood figures, carefully carved with all the smallest details and waxed to perfection. Taking the bigger one out, Nihren felt her heart melting as she recognized the two figures standing together in companionship. The taller one was a man in armor with large shoulders and a wolf head while the smaller one was a woman with a dragon's head.
Carefully, she set their toten at the table, enjoying the way the fire made their shadows dance for a second, before turning back to the box and taking the second figure.
It was made of the same material of the other, and with the same amount of care. Nihren felt her eyes filling with tears as she caressed the small wolf's head. Their pup.
"I- I thought I should make one for it... To honor its spirit..."
Nihren looked up at him with a watery smile. Farkas rubbed the back of his head embarrassed. He knew they would never forget, but even so, it felt like betrayal to leave it off of the tradition.
" They are beautiful. Thank you, love."
With the care one would use to manipulate the most fragile of the materials, Nihren set the small wolf cub figure in front of its pair, caressing their head in devotion before moving closer and burrowing her head to his chest in a tight hug. Farkas wrapped his arms around her shoulders and kissed her head in comfort, enjoying the sweet smell of her hair.
" Well, now I feel silly. I don't think my presents are appropriate."
Farkas chuckled, as she pulled away and moved over the table carefully set for dinner to grab her own present. Blushing, she handed him the full collection of The Lusty Argonian Maid.
" I thought it would be fun for us to read together..."
Farkas loud laugh was all the answer she got.
Thanks for reading! :D
