Chapter 24

Staring at the bottom of your glass/ Hoping one day you'll make a dream last/ But dreams come slow and they go so fast… Maybe one day you'll understand why/ Everything you touch surely dies. ―Let her go by Passenger

Bella's POV

My heart beats fast as I enter Edward's room, I feel like if there was a football stuck in my throat. He looks so at peace, so beautiful, it tortured me to think he was suffering, but he doesn't look as bad as I've imagined he would. I sit on a chair next to his bed, I grab his hand carefully not to unplug the tubes and wires in it.

I remember then, the time when I was in the hospital, how I was able to hear what others were saying, I try to speak to him with a hoarse voice, I tell him how much he means to me, how much he's loved by his family, I tell him to keep fighting not for me but for him, he deserves to live, he deserves to grow old if not with me with someone else, but he has to live. I may be too selfish but not with him, if he lives, he doesn't have to be with me, he could live his life with another girl. I just want him to live.

I must have fallen asleep as I wake when a nurse strokes my shoulder, focusing my eyes I realized I'm in Edward's hospital room, I walk out of the room to let her do her job, I'm surprised to see Alice in the waiting room, she receives me with a hug and a cup of coffee. "Hi, sleepyhead. It has extra sugar to cheer you up." "Thank you Alice. Have you seen Edward?"

"I did. A couple of minutes ago, you were sound asleep, I didn't dare to wake you up."

"That's so kind of you. Are there any news from the doctors?"

"He's stable but he isn't getting better, but I guess stable is better than getting worse, right?"

"Right." Just then I remember I have to call my parents, I left the house in a hurry and I forgot to say something to them. When I check my cell phone the battery is dead. "Alice, could you borrow me your cell phone? I need to call my parents."

"Don't worry Bella, I have contacted them already. I imagined how stress you were so after you left I took the liberty to call them. They had just arrived, they'll come later."

"Thank you, Alice. You're amazing."

Doctors have come and gone without saying something about Edward's condition, I just hope nothing bad had happened. My parents came and stayed for one hour. They brought coffee and cookies for everybody. I didn't see that coming, it seems like they really like Edward.

I would like to know what's going on, I've planned to corner one of the doctors and demand information, but every time they leave the room my determination diminishes. Just when I gather the strength to talk to a doctor an alarm goes on in his room, a group of doctors and nurses rushes in carrying machines, my face loses color and the same happens to everyone around me. I sit down looking for support, I keep praying in silence for him to be ok. Someone pats my back; I look up and see Emmett sitting next to me. He's trying to keep a façade, but deep inside I know how he's feeling. He loves his little brother so much even though he doesn't show it often. I realized now that Edward is the one that keeps the Cullens together; he is the core of the family. He has that amazing inexplicable quality that makes him likable to others, he's really there for everyone that comes to his life. I have presented my case, Edward Cullen has to live.

"Mom!" I turn to see Carlisle holding a fainted Esme on the floor, Alice is next to him. Emmett and I hurry to their side, Alice is moving a leaflet in front of Esme's face while Carlisle gives some pats on her cheek. "Esme, darling. Wake up." Hearing the voice of her husband she opens her eyes, astonished to see everybody around her. Before she could say a word, Alice reprimands her for not eating. "Mom, you have to eat something, this isn't good for you and you're not helping Edward by fasting."

"I know sweetheart. It's just that I'm not hungry at all, but I'll try one of the cookies the Swans brought us. That was so kind of them Bella. Thank them again when you see them."

"I will."

We all return to our seats, the alarm in Edward's room is not longer active. That should be a good sign, right? Doctors start to leave his room as well as the nurses. A doctor walks towards Carlisle and Esme, who walk to meet with the doctor. I'm anxious to know what he's saying. Looking at their faces I can assume Edward is not in danger. I take a deep breath and try to relax but it's impossible.

After what it feels hours instead of minutes, Carlisle and Esme tell us that Edward had a heart attack, the doctors were able to bring his heart to work again, and they said there was a blood clot but they were able to treat it in time to avoid major damage. They are giving him medicine to lessen the swelling of his brain, they said the CAT shows swelling of his brain but it's something they can treat, and though it sounds serious, the doctor said it's something that could happen in a car accident, and almost every case they treated shows full recovery. He has a broken arm and two broken ribs, but those are not life-threatening so we shouldn't worry, he will be sore for some days but it's manageable. The doctor also said they are lowering the med so he can be fully aware, he should be awake in some hours.

A/N: Thank you for sticking with me, I'm still recovering from surgery, I have a half cast and it's difficult to write with it, but I needed to write. Let me know what you think of this chapter.
