Unidentified Blue Lightning
Probe Four, Detainment
A/N - D'awww. Guys, I'm glad you're liking this so far! I'm absolutely in love with this concept, so I glad you are too. And the best part? It's only uphill from here people! Haha. I apologize for the slow up date, but for those of you who know my other works you know how horrible I am in that department. Heh.
In the mean time. I've got a few other Ghost Hunt fics you could check out. There's a cool Christmas themed one some of you might like.
Anyways, please enjoy!
When Mai woke up, it was to bright lights and an empty room. The only object in it was the bed she found herself passed out on. White painted concrete surrounded her on every side except for one wall where it was replaced by glass.
Still groggy, she rose to her feet, swaying slightly as a wave of nausea hit her. The faint pain at the base of her head brought her mind back to the incident at her job and a wave of panic ran through her. She's been kidnapped by people who claimed to be the Kempeitai. She didn't know if she could really believe them, but if they really were Japan's Kemukan, what did they want with her?
If she remembered correctly, the agents had said something about her harboring a fugitive... but even with part of her memory gone missing, Mai still doubted the validity of their accusation. What reason would she have to do such a thing?
It didn't make any sense. She wasn't the type of person who broke the law. It simply wasn't in her nature. Plus, it wasn't like she knew any fugitives. Or, well, she didn't think she did. The loss in her memory was making it hard to plead her case.
But really, none of that mattered to her right now. None of it changed the fact that she had been forcefully taken against her will and was now locked away in some weird jail cell.
Heart pounding, Mai stepped forward and tried to peer out of the glass in front of her. Even with her face pressed against it, it was hard to see anything other than a bunch of empty cells that looked identical to her own.
"Hello?" she called hesitantly into the silence. Surely she wouldn't be just left there to rot, right? Surely someone would come to question her, or feed her, or something? She desperately wished this to be true, but the more her call was met with silence the more she became panicked.
When she thought about it, Mai didn't even know how long she'd been out for. As far as she knew, she could have blacked out for another few months! And, to put the icing on the cake, she wasn't in her work clothes anymore. Someone had changed them into a bright yellow jumper. Changed them.
She felt violated at the discovery. Hadn't kidnapping her been enough?
Feeling too sore to continue standing, the brunette let out a defeated sigh and sat back down onto the cot. At the moment, the only way that she could describe her state of mind was overwhelmed. Wholly and completely.
Part of her wished that it was all a dream and that she would wake up to find Lin-sensei's disapproving stare as the class laughed at her for accidently dozing off again. She had only recently starting getting herself back together after her unexpected memory loss and now here she was dealing with a newer and even bigger challenge.
How could any of this ridiculousness be real?
Exhaling, Mai laid back down on her side and closed her eyes. Even though she had just woken up, she was still feeling extremely tired and emotionally worn out. Without another thought she fell into a restless sleep.

Mai sat, with a towel in hand, staring intently out at the dark lake water surrounding her as she waited for Kazuya to come back up to the surface. Even though this had been their third time doing this together, she still felt uneasy about the amount of time he could stay underwater. She was sure he had broken the world record ten time over, and if one night he turned around and told her he'd been a merman all along, she wouldn't have been surprised.
Re-folding the towel for the sixth time, the college student stared up at the stars from her spot in the row boat. It was rare to see so many of them in the sky in the city, so she had come to enjoy coming to the lakes with Kazuya... even if he was deep diving most of the time. To help pass the time, Mai had gotten the habit of making up constellations. Though, since she was a bit hungry, after a few minutes everything started to look like food. The cheeseburger constellation looked pretty good about now.
When she got tired of that she thought of Kazuya. They had met each other two weeks ago, and she still didn't know much about him. And yet, he was practically living on her couch (a product of her own persistence, of course). Mai wasn't even sure what it was that he was looking for, only that it was important enough to want to search every lake, pool, pond, and river in Japan for it.
She felt a bit guilty that she couldn't really help with the underwater searching. She wasn't a very powerful swimmer, though adequate enough no to drown, and she definitely wouldn't be able to see anything underwater-especially not at night. She didn't understand how Kazuya was able too either but he had assured her he was more than capable. ….Another strange thing about Kazuya that made her believe he would truly reveal himself as a mermaid.
Truth be told, the more she got to know the man, the stranger she found him to be. Even for a foreigner, she found him to be very odd. He drank tea at an abnormal rate. He didn't bother to eat much, but when he did it was in unreal amounts. He'd had not money on him, nor had a place to stay when she'd found him. Then, of course, there was the way he talked. ...The list went on really.
And yet, Mai didn't see him as being a threat or in the least bit dangerous. In fact, if she had accused him of anything, it would be his full subscription to narcissism. In her opinion, he tended to be completely full of himself. In fact, he was so narcissistic that she had the urge to nickname him Naru. Naru the Narcissist. It had a nice ring to it.
As if on cue, Kazuya chose that moment to resurface, nearly scaring Mai half to death. After the initial shock, she helped him into the boat, knowing already from his expression that he still hadn't been successful.
Immediately wrapping him up in the towel, she smiled at him warmly despite the dejected look on his face. He always got that way when he turned up short. And she now knew it as the same dazed expression she'd seen on him when they'd first met.
From what she'd gathered, this was the tenth time he'd checked a body of water, not including the times he'd re-visited a place to double check. She was more than sure that he'd probably come back to double check this place too while she was in class. "You'll find it Naru," she encouraged, earning her a narrowed gaze.
"Where did you hear that?"
It took her a moment to realize she'd called him by her internal nickname. "W-what? You mean someone else has called you that? Heh. Well I guess Naru the narcissist isn't that original, huh?"
He blinked at this, "you made it up?"
Mai scratched her cheek in embarrassment. "Yeah. I thought... it fit pretty well... you don't like it?"
He didn't answer.

The next time Mai woke up, she was being pulled to her feet by two men in weird helmets and dark uniforms. With their visors down she couldn't see their expressions, which only made it that much more terrifying when the grogginess of sleep fell away and she could think clearly.
"W-what's going on? W-where are you are you taking me?!"
Panicking, Mai tried to dig her feet into the ground to resist, but her bare skin held no traction and merely slid across the cold hallway they insisted on pulling her down. The two men on either side of her grunted in response to her struggling, but kept a tight grip on her arms.
"Let go!" she yelled, but they chose to ignore her.
She was taken down a series of white halls, all the doors labeled with numbers making it impossible to guess what it was behind them. Her abductors stopped in front of one labeled 135-9 and waved what looked like an access card in front of a scanner.
The door slid open and she was pushed inside. Stumbling, she nearly knocked into a table were both the man and the woman from the other day sat. The male smiled at her in an attempt to appear friendly, while the woman sized her up, a scowl resting on her cherry painted lips.
"Please sit," the man insisted, gesturing to an empty chair across from them.
Lips pressing into a thin line, a mix of anger and confusion crossed Mai's face as she complied with his request. "What do you want from me?"
The man furrowed him eyebrows, but held amusement in his eyes. "What makes you think we want anything?"
The brunette resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Yeah, she could be a bit slow at times, but even she wasn't that stupid. It was obvious that this was an interrogation. "I wouldn't be here if you didn't... right?"
With a sigh, the man unbuttoned his suit jacket and leaned forward, fingers interlocking. "Alright then. Tell us why you think you're here."
Mai frowned deeply a this, staring at the both of them as if they'd spontaneously turned purple or something. "I don't know why. I wouldn't keep asking if I did!" In frustration she kicked the table leg by accident, earning her an annoyed look from the red head across from her. "You said something about harboring a fugitive, but I have no clue what you're talking about!"
The woman snorted, "Cut the crap princess. You know a lot more than you're tying to get us to believe."
"I don't," Mai insisted strongly.
After a pause of silence, the man cleared his throat and moved to open a file in front of him. "Right. Ok. So you don't know this guy then?" He asked curiously, tossing a series of pictures in front of her.
The images immediately confused her. Everyone of them showed her with a black haired boy, and in everyone his electric blue eyes were staring directly at the camera. The pictures were obviously supposed to be taken without the target's notice, as she herself was always shown as having no idea they were being taken, and yet this guy looked straight at the lens in each one. All of them.
As strange as that was, her mind was more preoccupied with the fact that she was with him in the pictures at all. Her thoughts swam within the depths of her mind, making it completely impossible to make heads or tails of anything her brain was processing. She didn't remember any of this, and yet the pictures looked relatively recent.
"No... I..." Mai couldn't finish her sentence as she picked up one particular picture where she was hugging the strange male, much to his discomfort. Something tugged within her heart and before she could stop it a renegade tear feel from one of her eyes. A feeling of sadness bubbled within her that she couldn't quite understand. "I..."
"I'm sorry."
The brunette's brows furrowed as a pair of desperate blue eyes flashed past her vision. Breath catching in her throat, she felt more tears rush down her face. Everything in her screamed that she knew him, but she couldn't remember, she couldn't...
"Your reaction doesn't look like a no," the man commented delicately, face showing something dangerously close to concern.
"I..." Mai still couldn't get a sentence out, her head spun and swam as a horrible pain erupted through her skull. Her hand tightened around the photo and she gasped, all she could see now where blue eyes staring at her. Why.
"I'm sorry."
Why!
The lightbulb above the table shattered, showing glass down on them as Mai slumped onto the table. Unconscienced and still gripping the photo.

Surrounded in darkness, Mai stood alone in a quiet abyss both worried and at peace. Somewhere in the distance she was confused and crying, but here all her thoughts melted and ceased. She wanted answers but couldn't think of the questions.
"Mai..."
Hearing her name, the brunette turned slowly, brown eyes resting on warm ocean ones. Her breath hitched slightly, and without even registering what she was doing, she walked closer to the figure. "Naru...?" She questioned lightly. How she knew his name she wasn't sure...
"Mai..." he repeated, eyes saddening as she reached out a hand to him.

Mai woke up to the sight of stale bread, a turkey sandwich, and a bottle of water with a sigh Rolling over onto her back, she frowned up at the ceiling. "Naru," she repeated verbally once and a million times in her head. "Who are you?"
A/N: That's a good place to stop me thinks. Hope you liked this chapter as much as a loved writing it. I'm sure I've given you more questions than answers, but I'm not sorry ~ Haha.
Let me know what you think. Hopefully it won't take me took long to give you another chapter. Heh.
