WHEN WE WERE KIDS
CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT
Whilst we walked back, I explained everything to Natsu. He looked down at the pavement, and wouldn't look up.
"I hate this. I just wanna be a care free kid again." He sighed.
"Don't we all?" I offered, giving him a melancholy smile. He put his arm around my shoulder.
"You're right."
"Well, even if we didn't have to do this stupid thing, we still wouldn't be kids... last night, we kind of confirmed that, right?"
"Yes, but we'd be care free." He contradicted. "It's a waste of time! I can't remember anything!" He said, frustrated.
"That's why we are going to the clearing. The answers have to be there, and it will shake your memory for sure."
"...I don't wanna remember him. He left me." Natsu mumbled.
"It will stop this time loop. If we are the cause of this mess up, we owe it too them." I replied, taking his hand.
"I miss when we were fourteen." He sighed.
"Mm..."
We arrived at my house, still sad, still confused. Mokarov and Silver came out of the kitchen too see us, check we were fine. A paternal smile spread across Mokarov's face as he saw Natsu.
"Are you okay?" He asked. Natsu nodded.
"Fine. Just tell us what we need to do." He replied grumpily. Mokarov lead us into the homey kitchen, where the usual smell of apples was. Damn. If we were to go, that smell would be gone as well. What was the harm in a time loop? We just continued living, that was all, and we were happy...what was the harm?
"Alright." Mokarov said as he rolled out a giant map onto the table. "The clearing is here, in the Forest of Fallen Stars-"
"Why the name?" I asked.
"...you'll see. So the forest is extremely secluded, between mountains, a desert, and the ocean, the safest path is through caves that run under the mountain."
"Can't we just go over it?" Natsu asked.
"No, I tried that first time I went, I nearly got pulverised by Vulcans. They don't tend to inhabit caves, though, so you should be okay. Remember, this is a dangerous treck."
"Why exactly did you go?" I asked. He said he sensed the magic when he got there. Mokarov gave a grin.
"You'll see that when you get there as well."
"So, basically we go there-" Natsu said, sliding his finger to the mountain range"-under there-" he said, sliding his finger across the mountains "-and arrive there." He finished, pointing his finger in the middle of the green blob that was the Fores of Fallen Stars.
"Yes. But just remember that it is dangerous, and you are still kids."
"Yeah yeah...right, I'm off." Natsu said, getting up.
"Natsu-" Mokarov said, holding his son's arm.
"Hmm?"
"I'm here for you, like a father, don't forget that." He said. Natsu nodded, and walked away. I looked at the doorway, then sighed.
"Lucy." Mokarov said, as Silver walked out as well.
"Yes?"
"You heard me when I said that I could detect magic better now I was master? Which means even the smallest traces-"
"Yes, I guessed." I said, lowering my head, and holding my pocket.
"I know, Lucy." He said. I gulped.
"Know what?"
"Don't pretend." He said, looking at me knowingly.I sighed.
"I-I'm sorry...it's just it was my mother's magic, and she left me the keys...I needed too." I said.
"What magic is it?"
"Celestial magic, a ho-"
"Holder type, yes, I'm well educated."
"Guess it doesn't matter if anyone knows know, anyway. Since we're going." I said. He looked at me sideways.
"Amazing. No wonder he fell in love with you." He said. I felt kind of flattered, but surprised at the remark.
"Aren't you going to tell the school?" I asked.
"Now why would I do that?" He laughed. I smiled. "But Lucy..."
"Yes?"
"Natsu...do you want to know why I adopted him?" He asked.
"You found him, didn't you?"
"That's one of the reasons..."
"There's another one?!" I said, surprised.
"Yes...I felt a magic in him, deep in his heart that he isn't aware of. I asked him continoulsy if he practiced magic but he always reassured me that no. I suspect it's been there since he was born."
"What?! How is that even possible?!" I cried out. Magic was learnt, and Natsu was human, it was impossible.
"I don't know. But, lately, I've felt a surge of magic power in him, that continues to grow stronger. This new magic seems to be more controlled."
"Oh." I said, and laughed. "Ask him if he is learning magic again." I said, smiling at him. Mokarov laughed.
"You two, you need to stay together." He said. I nodded.
"I don't intend to leave him."
"I mean...we don't know what restoring the time stream will do..."
"If we manage to restore it. If this is true, then we have failed before."
"I trust you'll manage this time. Lucy, don't tell Natsu what I've told you, he's already going through enough." He ordered. I nodded at him.
"I'll see you tomorrow then." I said, and walked out.
I needed time alone. Just some time to organise my mind. So much had happened in the past four months. I walked around Magnolia a bit, down to the center, then around the outskirts. It was a beautiful town, and sunset was just beginning. I walked up the mountain where the sign was, and stroked the letters.
"Wow...only four months ago since I first saw you?" I said too it. It didn't reply. I lay down in the grass on the side of the road, and closed my eyes. If I hadn't come here...
"Miss Lucy, there's a letter for you." My maid said. I was busy reading for my studies. If I had a letter it was just probably some other noble saying he had a suitor for my marriage. In three years. Calm down. Jeez.
"I'm busy." I said coldly. Right now I really didn't want any letters.
"Miss, I shall leave it here for you."
"Don't bother can you put it in the rubbish please?" I asked.
"M-miss!"
"Miss Lucy, you're father is asking for you." My father's footman said. I sighed and got up. The maid looked at me.
"I'll throw the letter away." She said.
"Yes. Thank you."I answered, and walked out. The endless corridors of the mansion made me dizzy, and the clean smell intoxicated me. I hated aristocracy. I hated being alone. And most of all I hated having a dead mother. I wanted to leave, have an adventure, and learn magic. I wanted to run away, but I had no idea where I would go. I laughed to myself. I had this little fantasy that I would run away, and find myself on a farm, and the farmer there had a gorgeous son, who loved to read and was intelligent and-
I stopped. I was outside my fathers office. Inside I heard a voice.
"Tristan." I whispered. Idiot. What was he doing? I leant my ear against the door.
When I had heard enough. I started to walk back to the study, calmy. But my heart was pounding. Tears were coming. And I started to run back to the library. I wanted to shut myself away in the books again. Bam. Tristan wanted to marry me. My father would have him gone. I didn't want to know what he meant by that. But what saddened me he most was the fact that Tristan loved me. He was my friend. Someone who I knew would never betray me. But not anymore... I walked into the library, and took my book of the desk.
"She forgot to throw it away..." I sighed, picking up the letter. There was something weird about it. It had no seal. I opened it.
I forgot my fantasy about running away to a farm and fall in love with the gentle farmer's son. I had Magnolia, and Silver.
I took some money with me. It was stupid of me, I should of bought more, and I didn't want to take the train. It reminded me of my father. So I walked. It was a week away.
On the first day, everything was fine. I walked trough the forest and there were no bandits. It was nice as well, the forest. I slept on the ground, in the warm summer.
The second day though, food became scarce. I managed to find some edible mushrooms which I knew of thanks to a book I read, and I still had water.
The third day however, was dreadful. I found myself dehydrated, and without food. My vision was becoming blurry, and I was so tired. My feet dragged me along the path.
"Miss, are you alright!" A voice called. I turned around, it was a wagon, carrying crates of some merchandise. I tried to focus, but my mouth was so dry. I fainted.
When I awoke, I was in a bed, my shoes of, and bag next to me. I got up quickly.
"H-huh?!" I said, as I touched my lips. They were wet, and my throat wasn't dry anymore. Stop with your pervy ideas, biscuits. No. Lucy was not raped in her sleep. And nor will this story include child pregnancy. Being the twisted person I am I considered it, but no. Bisous.
"Ah, you're awake." A woman's voice said.
"W-where am I?" I asked. She smiled, and got up, handing me a cup of water. I took it, and drank. "Thank you."
"My husband was coming back from the market, when he spotted you. He said you were walking drowsily, and then you fainted. You were dehydrated, young lass." The woman said. She had a kind feel to her.
"Y-yes...I hadn't drank..." I said.
"Where're ya' from, lass?" She asked. I closed my mouth. "Not willin' to say? Ah well, everyone has there secrets." She said, and smiled.
"Thank you. But I still don't understand, where am I?" I repeated.
"You're on our farm, we live three miles from Magnolia. Do you want too eat with us?" She asked.
"Food?!" I said, but clapped my hand over my mouth. That was impolite. But the woman laughed.
"Yep, come on, I'm mrs Jespen, nice too meet you..."
"L..Lily." I said, giving a fake name. Giving my name know wasn't a good idea.
"Okay, Lily, come eat with us." She said. I got up, put my shoes on, and walked out. In the kitchen was a man and...a boy...who must of been their son...
Coincidence?!
"Here's mister Jespen, and our son, Daniel." She said. I smiled.
"Thank you very much for helping me." I said.
"No problem, but what were you doing walkin' around with no water?" Mister Jespen asked.
"I..I got lost." I said. "Getting to Magnolia it's my home." I confirmed.
"Ah, well it's easy to get lost round these parts, what's your name lass?"
"Lily." I said.
"Eat with us."
I ate with them. They were lovely people. I kept shooting glances at their son. He had pale blond hair, almost white, and fair skin. He kept smiling at me as well. My running-away-to-a-farm-fantasy came back, and I stiffled a laugh. The world was a small place.
When I had finished eating, I thanked them again, and they smiled at me. Mister Jespen showed me the direction of Magnolia, and told me it was only a short walk, so I left.
That morning, I arrived at Magnolia, letter in hand. And so my life started.
"It feels like an eternity ago..." I sighed.
"Lucy!" Someone called. I turned round, and saw Natsu I smiled at him. "Where d'you go?" He asked, puffed out.
"Sorry, I felt nostalgic." I said.
"Jeez, you aren't old yet." He laughed. I hit his shoulder.
"You know, if it hadn't been for a clumsy maid, I wouldn't be here." I said. He laughed.
"Wow. The tiniest things make perfect concoctions."
"Hmm. Nice way to look at it." I smiled, before kissing him. I loved him so much. Hell with farms. I had Natsu.
That's it. Sorry. I felt like giving Lucy a flashback.
