One week later
I walk into the mission at 5:30 am, still tired from yesterday's sparring session with Sam and Kensi and the basketball game after. I don't know why I decided to talk to Hetty this early before I go surfing, but since I'm already here, it'd be crazy to leave again.
At least no one will get suspicious, so it'll be an even bigger surprise once it's revealed.
I look around the mission but can't find her. The only thing I see and smell is the strong scent of the tea brewing. I look up the stairs and can hear some people talking, but I don't recognize her voice so I begin to walk to her desk.
"Mr. Deeks, nice to see you on this lovely morning. May I ask you what you are doing here at 5:31 in the morning?"
"Oh my god, Hetty, you almost gave me a heart attack," I say, still shocked to suddenly see her.
"That certainly wasn't my plan, Mr. Deeks," she answers in an amused tone.
"Right," I say, chuckling," I wanted to uhm… talk to you."
"I see," she answers with a nod, "and I guess since you're here at this hour, you don't want your team to know?"
I smile before answering. "Not yet, Hetty. We'll get to it later."
"Do you want tea, Mr. Deeks? Today I'm drinking a classic. Earl Grey. The queen gave it to me personally when I last visited her. Oh, she still can't beat me in card games," she remembers, laughing.
"You met the q-oh. Right, you're Hetty," I say, chuckling to myself before seeing her stern look, "Ehm no, thank you for the offer, but I don't usually drink tea."
"Given this is a special occasion, not a normal chasing bad guys day like any other, you should reconsider your answer. I suppose you're here for what's already lying in front of you?" she asks, smirking with another cup in her hands.
I look down and really, it's what I wanted to talk to her about. "How did you know I would come this morning?"
She sets the tea down in front of me and takes the papers from me, after I've signed them.
"Ask me tomorrow."
"Now, since we sorted this out, let's enjoy our tea, shall we?" I say, smiling.
I end up forgoing surfing this morning, instead talking to Hetty for hours; you could hear our laughs everywhere in the mission.
"Hi Callen, hi Sam," I say cheerfully when they enter the bullpen.
"Why so happy today, Deeks?" Callen asks, raising an eyebrow questioningly.
"Can't I be happy guys?"
"Don't mind him, Deeks," Sam tells me from my left. "When everyone is happy it's always good."
Right at the end of this sentence Kensi appears—in a slightly not-so-good mood. She's cursing about some bad driver and that she didn't have time to get donuts.
"Morning, Fern," I say, smiling at my girlfriend. She briefly smiles at me but then morosely turns her attention to the paperwork for the day.
I walk over to her desk with a dozen donuts, bought this morning on a coffee run, hiddenbehind my back and sit down on the edge.
"Hey, what's up?"
She looks up with tired eyes and sighs. "It's nothing. I got up late, because my alarm didn't go off, then I had no time to get donuts, I only had coffee and then some stupid driver almost caused an accident in front of me."
I smile at her and put the donuts on her desk. "At least I can solve your donut problem. It was my week to get breakfast anyway," I answer her while she's already started to eat her first one.
"Mhhhhh," she moans, "they're so good. Thanks, Deeks," she says, and squeezes my hand quickly while smiling up at me.
"You're welcome, Princess," I say, already getting up to begin my work for the day.
Two days later
"Good morning, gorgeous."
"Hi, partner," she whispers, kissing my naked chest. She lies her head back down on it and lets out a sigh.
I chuckle at that. "What's with the heavy sigh?"
"I really don't wanna leave the bed. It's comfortable and you're comfortable and it's so, so warm in here," she says, pulling the sheets further up her body.
I smile and kiss her head before answering. "I know the feeling. The view I've got from here is much better than the one I can get at work," I say, chuckling while I lift the sheets up.
And she punches me right in the shoulder after I end my sentence. "Idiot," she says, laughing and standing up covered only in a thin layer of sheets.
"Where are you going?"
"Shower," she says seductively, letting the sheets fall when she stands in the bathroom door. Her back is turned towards me and she looks over her shoulder. "Wanna join me, Shaggy?"
"Who can say no to such an offer?" I say before jumping of the bed to join her.
Later this morning at work
"You two should work on your ability to not come in late... together," Sam quips when we enter the bullpen.
"Good morning to you, too, Sam," I say, sarcastically, "maybe you should enjoy your next morning the way we did."
"Deeks!" Kensi squeals, embarrassed. "Sam, I..," she starts but Sam just winks at me and grins along with Callen.
"Kids."
"It is good to have someone to share your life with, Mr. Callen," Hetty says, suddenly appearing from somewhere with a box in her hands, "but you, Mr. Deeks and Ms. Blye, shouldn't let it interfere your work again. Do you understand?"
"Unterstood," we both answer in sync.
"Now, Mr. Deeks, I have something you might want to open," she tells me, coming to stand in front of me and handing over the box. "The other things are already resolved. You just need to give the last remaining items back today."
I smile at her. "Will do Hetty. Thank you."
"What's in the box?" Kensi asks, the moment Hetty disappears.
"Oh, now you want to know what's in my box, huh?" I tease her.
"Show me, Deeks, or I will find a way," she threatens me.
"Well, since you're so curious, you can open it yourself," I say and hold it out to her. "Just don't break anything, please. I wanna keep these things a long time," I say, winking at her.
"What can be that importa-," she says and stops when she opens the box and lifts out the paper from Hetty and a shiny new badge and gun. "Oh my God, Deeks?"
"Yes, Kensi?" I ask, looking at my team and watching their reaction.
"Is it what I think it is? You're NCIS now?"
"Sure looks like it, doesn't it?" I say, smiling.
"Congratulations, Deeks!" Sam says, pulling me into a gruff, slightly bone-bruising hug. "I'm glad you're finally officially a part of our team," he adds and gives me a shoulder pat before sitting down again.
Callen is next. He holds his hand out and I take it. "Now we don't need to fear the days you're not here. Kensi sure can't live without her partner," he says, grinning.
"Thanks, guys."
Eric drums from upstairs, telling us we've got a case. "We're upstairs when you two are done."
"We'll be in OPS soon," I say, turning to a smiling Kensi.
"You're here for good, right?"
"You can't get rid of me that easily now."
She squeals happily before jumping into my arms. "Don't want to, Shaggy."
I hug her back and slowly let her down. "Need to save your ass, right?"
She chuckles. "Need to get us to the ten years also," she says smiling.
I nod and whisper in her ear. "I don't think you have to wait ten years, you know," I look into her eyes after and see her blush, "Now do I get a congratulations kiss?"
She bites her bottom lip, then looks around before giving me a quick kiss. "Happy?" she asks, chuckling.
"For now, yes," I say, smiling.
She smiles back and starts her way up the stairs. "Come on, Agent Deeks, we don't want to get scolded by Hetty again," she reminds me, laughing.
Following her upstairs, starting my life as a federal agent, I can only think of one thing.
This is where I belong.
