Opposites Attract.

He's just awkwardly confessed his love for her. She's just turned him down. They have nothing in common … he decides to prove her wrong. :Rose/Scorpius NextGen:

Chapter 2: Opposites are the same.

Rose didn't see Scorpius Malfoy for the rest of the day and honestly, by the time she was striding into work the following morning, she was hoping against all hopes that he had simply decided to forget the whole thing. Thank the lord, their entire department had enough to do as it was!

Working on the International Events Committee, Rose was a part of the team organising the Wizardry, Alchemy and Magic festival. While Rose figured her bosses could have come up with a much better acronym (WAM? Seriously?) she had to admit that this was the highlight of her job every year.

WAM was an annual celebration of magic and wizardkind, held somewhere in the United Kingdom every year since the end of the Second Wizarding War. Any magical person from the UK was invited to attend the festivities and so with hundreds of thousands of people flocking into one country, Rose spent the better part of the entire months of June and July preparing for the British contribution during that week in August, at the end of summer. And naturally, this year it was England's turn to host the event.

Yes, since Malfoy worked on the International Events team as well, he was also a part of the event organisation. But so far (thank Merlin!) she had managed to avoid direct contact with him. Rose didn't think she could handle seeing him at the moment. Her grudging resentment that she had usually felt towards him the past seven years or so had somehow just turned into awkward, oh my god, I don't want to see him lest he start trying to serenade me with cheesy love songs feelings.

But the only reason she had managed to avoid him so far was because their entire department was running haggard. She had to watch her head and duck out of the way as people tore down the corridors, yelling out that there weren't enough marquees for the Liverpool location, or that the dragons were behind schedule in being shipped safely to London and were possibly lost over the ocean somewhere (Rose noticed one of her colleagues yelling frantically that they were going to be dealing with a potential international incident for that one). She was pretty sure that there were some people who hadn't even been home in weeks and with the celebrations rapidly approaching, even Rose had spent a night or two curled up on her office floor.

So, naturally, when Rose ran into a close friend, she was more than a bit off her rocker.

"Rose … what …" Lucinda Gardiner raised an eyebrow. "… what're you doing?"

More commonly known as Lulu, Rose's friend had joined their team about a year into Rose working there. While at first Rose had considered the woman, well, just a little bit nuts (and that was putting it nicely) Lulu had proven herself to be a rather dedicated and loving person … you know, when she wasn't flirting with someone and had the decency to warn everybody before screaming with delight at something.

"I, my dear friend, am perfecting my spy skills," Rose told her, arms and legs spread out across the wall corridor as she shuffled sideways down it towards her office.

"Really?" Lulu snorted. "It looks like you've had a bit of an accident and aren't very good at hiding it."

"I swear to you, I'm just trying to be subtle!"

"Um, you're talking to me, do you not know the meaning of the word?"

"Exactly! So get away from me!" Rose grinned, shuffling a bit faster, lest he come barrelling out of nowhere –

"Oh, no way, sister!" Lulu cried, hurrying after Rose. "You have to explain this little crab-dance thing you've got going on! Are you trying to hide from your ex in Foreign Relations? 'Cause I'm pretty sure their offices were transferred to another part of the building–"

"No, but now that you mention it, thanks for telling me," Rose said, reaching a corner. While Lulu simply stood in the middle of the corridor, sweeping back her ridiculously long blond hair, Rose stuck her head cautiously around the corner, waiting to see if the coast was clear. Rose's office was smack mid-way down the International Events corridor with Lulu's nearer to the doors (which would've been handy for a daring escape; perhaps she should ask if they could swap–?)

"Rose, you've been acting weird all day," Lulu huffed, glancing around the corridor. Her friend never could keep her mouth shut and sure enough, as their colleagues darted down the hall, Lulu called out to several of them, accepting and rejecting various event plans along the way and even finding the time to mouth, 'Owl me!' to Travis across the hall.

"I've been acting weird?" Rose pointed out. "Lulu, it's nearly WAM, our entire department has gone bloody nuts!"

"Hi, Jas–! Oh, you know what I mean," Lulu said, shooting her a look as Jasmine approached, holding several English flags.

"Hey, Lulu, Rose!" Jasmine said, face frantic. "Do either of you know where–?"

"Entrance to every location," Rose said at once, in reference to the flag's intended locations. "Don't tell me, mind's going wild?"

"I feel like my mother," Jasmine moaned in agreement. "I can't remember anything!"

"Coming out tonight?" Lulu asked her.

"God, I think I need it!" Jasmine laughed before darting off.

"But anyway," Lulu suddenly ploughed on as if there had been no interruption to their conversation. Rose just sighed, leaning against the corner wall, resigning herself to listening to Lulu's rambles. "Rosie, while I'll admit that sanity is a bit thin on the ground these days, I know you're not mental, but ever since yesterday, you've been … I dunno, paranoid or something – hey, Karla, send that invite out, would you?! Thanks, bitch!" she added to yet another mate of hers, calling out across the hall.

"I know, I know," Rose sighed. "Let's just get to my office, then I can–"

"Lord, even Scorpius Malfoy looks like he's had it too," Lulu giggled then, and Rose's head snapped around in a panic. Sure enough, there was no mistaking the tall, awkward bloke heading her way down the corridor.

Damn it, how did he always know where to find her?!

"Mind you," Lulu continued, sadly. "He always looks like that, doesn't he? Bloody gormless. Wouldn't kill the man to smile, bloke's gorgeous, it's such a waste–"

"Hold that thought!" Rose yelped, snagging Lulu's hand and suddenly pelting for her office. She didn't look back once and by the time she was slamming her office door shut, Lulu was shrieking and trying to make sure that her hair hadn't been caught in the jam. Breathing out a large sigh of relief, Rose rested her back against the door.

Seriously … why did this have to happen now?

"Ok, what the hell was that?" Lulu asked, twirling the ends of her hair, just to be sure that they were all in one piece. "Are you, what, hiding from Malfoy or something?"

"It's a rather long story, Lulu."

"Ooh, those are my favourite," Lulu cried. "C'mon, Rose, I've known you for how many years now? You can't hold out on me–"

"Oh, just watch me," Rose grinned.

"Rooooose!"

"Yeah, yeah," Rose continued to smirk as she kicked at one of the two un-matching visitor's chairs that she had in her office. She and Lulu sat in each, Rose eyeing the door every now and then, should an unwelcome snob by the name of Malfoy come jerking in.

"What would you say if I told you that I'd found out that Scorpius Malfoy was in love with someone?" she asked, hesitantly.

"I'd say what a lucky bitch," Lulu answered at once. "He's one handsome devil!"

"Ok, but personality wise?"

"Oh," Lulu snorted. "nothing but good effing luck."

"Exactly," Rose said with a grimace. "So what if I told you that the girl he's in love with is … um, well, me?"

Far from the sympathetic there, there she wanted, Lulu simply burst out laughing.

Why did Rose like this woman? She clearly needed new friends.

"… don't hurt yourself," Rose muttered.

"Oh, man! Rose Weasley!" Lulu cried, arms clutched around her middle. "Stop! Stop, you're just too much!"

"It's true, Lulu," Rose said, exasperatedly. "Yesterday afternoon, he comes into my office and he just stands there, stock-still, and tells me that he's in love with me."

"Good lord!" Lulu said, still half laughing. "You're not joking, are you?"

"You think I would joke about this?" Rose cried.

"No, no …" Lulu took a deep breath, still fighting down a smile on her face. "But blimey, Rose! I mean, I was sort of under the impression that the man wasn't interested in anyone."

"Forget that, I thought he was incapable of even liking someone."

"This is incredible!" Lulu exclaimed. Then, she eyed Rose with scepticism and added, "Hang on, wait. I get it must have been a shock, but why are you trying to run away from him?"

"Why do you think?" Rose insisted. "Because I told him no!"

Lulu's grey eyes went wide. "Why in Merlin's name would you do such a crazy thing?"

"You said it yourself," Rose huffed. "Maybe because he's never even shown the slightest bit of interest? Because he's stuck up and never said more than two words to me at a time? Because he actually had no idea why I was turning him down?"

"Jesus, who cares if he's a bit of a prick?" Lulu said at once. "Sure, he might be pompous and stuffy, but Rosie, he's bloody hot. I would've shagged him a loooong time ago if he'd been up for it! If he loves you, why not give it a shot?"

Sometimes, Rose really appreciated Lulu's insight. Today, not so much. "Because, Lulu," Rose said, warily. "I … I was hurt, all those years ago. When I first started working here and tried to talk to him, tried to get to know him. He just brushed me off, rather roughly too, and I'll admit that I was disappointed. All anyone could say about him was that he thought he was better than everyone else and didn't like talking to people. I had been determined to prove them wrong. But …"

"He proved them right," Lulu said, quietly for a change.

Rose leaned back in her hair with a sigh. "Yeah."

"If he'd said all this back then … y'know, that he actually loves you and shit, d'you think you'd have given him a different answer?"

"I don't know," Rose hesitated. "Maybe … I know my parents don't like him, but hell, we're 27-years-old! I think we're a bit past the point in time where our parents can decide who we can and can't go out with."

For a moment, Lulu didn't answer and Rose just watched as her friend took this all in. Then, Lulu shook her head and said with a grin, "I'm sorry, I'm still just trying to picture this! I mean, hell, Scorpius Malfoy!"

"Trust me, my reaction was more along the lines of you have got to be kidding me."

"It must've been the most awkward conversation known to man!"

"You have no idea."

"But wait," Lulu added, holding up a hand. "If you told him no … he should be the one feeling awkward. Why are you still trying to run away from him?"

Rose hesitated. The story of her hiding under a desk wasn't exactly the most glamorous, but Lulu had seen her through some of her best and worst times (a particularly bad break-up a few years ago came to mind. Rose figured that everyone needed that friend who would let you cry all over their new shirt, eat all their ice cream, then hastily stop you from sending embarrassing 'I want you back' owls). So she gritted her teeth and told her the whole story.

"He … sort of told me that he wasn't giving up," Rose admitted. "I essentially turned him down because I figured we were just too different, so he told me that he was going to prove me wrong."

"Oh my god," Lulu said, that wide-eyed expression coming back. "You better watch out. If Malfoy knows what he's doing, there's no telling how much of a melted puddle you may become."

"This is Malfoy we're talking about," Rose reminded her. "The bloke has about as much charm as a toilet brush. I seriously doubt it."

"Are you trying to tell me that you have no feelings for that man whatsoever?" Lulu asked.

Rose snorted. "I don't even know him, Lulu! And that's kind of his fault, isn't it?"

Lulu smirked. "I can tell there's a 'but' coming …"

"Oh, shut up," Rose reached out with her foot and lightly tapped Lulu on the leg. "He's good-looking, I can't deny that. But I'm still standing by my opinion that even if I did decide to give it a shot, it would never work. We have absolutely nothing in common and I mean, what can he do, side from changing his entire personality?"

Lulu shrugged. "Remember, there's 'almost there' drinks tonight at the pub," she said. "Entire team's always invited. Maybe he'll actually go for a change?"

Good Merlin, Rose could only imagine. Their team often went out together to celebrate significant milestones throughout their year, such as St. Patrick's, International Witches Appreciation Day, halfway, quarter of the way, 'shit it's WAM', 'god we're sick of WAM', 'we're almost to WAM', 'parrrrty WAM's over!' … um, Tuesdays …?

And so on and so forth.

But Scorpius Malfoy hadn't gone to a single outing since he'd started working in the department.

Not one.

"There is nothing on this planet that would make Scorpius Malfoy voluntarily go to a party," Rose said at once.

"It isn't a party! It's casual drinks with mates!"

"Yeah, for this department, that's a party."

"Well, that's only if you invite Kylie across the hall," Lulu pointed out. "Can't hold her liquor to save her life, can she?"

"Didn't she dance on a table last time, before getting off with our boss?"

"I love Kylie," Lulu grinned.

"Well, that proves it!" Rose insisted. "Any situation that involves people, alcohol and possible table-dancing scenarios is an automatic no for that bloke. There's no way in hell he's coming."

Lulu just shrugged. "Believe what you want," she said, before uncrossing her long legs and sitting up. "But when he shows and you're freaking out, don't think I'll have any sympathy for you."

"Whatever, bitch," Rose grinned as Lulu stood and made for the door. She knew for a fact that if anything of the sort did happen (which it wouldn't), Lulu would be at her side, begging for details within ten seconds.

"My desk is probably covered in memos by now," Lulu sighed. "But I'll see you tonight, Rose! You and your man – WHOA!"

Rose looked up just in time to see Lulu pitch headfirst out of her office door. There was a thump and a crash as she fell into the corridor beyond. Laughing, Rose darted for the door and leaned against the frame to see Lulu sprawled on the ground and looking extremely disgruntled.

"… you were saying?" Rose asked.

"Walked into that and fell arse over tit!" Lulu complained, pointing.

Rose glanced at the offending object that had apparently been sitting just outside her office door. It was a bit bashed up from where Lulu had hit it, but it was clear that it was a wicker basket full of cupcakes.

Cupcakes.

Holy shit.

"It's from him, isn't it?" Lulu asked, forgetting her annoyance at having face-planted almost at once and was now climbing to her knees to get a better look. "How does he know that you have an unhealthy obsession with cupcakes? Check it, is it from him–?"

"Lulu, shut up!" Rose said. She leaned down and picked up the note that accompanied the cupcakes. There were only five words, but those five words had the ability to give her a bloody heart attack.

For Rose. See you tonight.

He wouldn't actually come. Of course he wouldn't come, Rose was sure of that. Nevertheless, when five o'clock rolled around and every five seconds, someone was sticking their head around her door to ask if she was coming that night, Rose almost hesitated.

He wouldn't come … surely?

"Stop fidgeting!" Lulu insisted, slapping Rose's hand away from her sleeves. "That dress looks totally hot and you need to stop freaking out over whether Malfoy's going to turn up!"

"I'm not freaking out!"

"Rose," Lulu shot her a look, which kind of scared her. Lulu wasn't exactly what you could call observant, so the fact that she'd even noticed that she was stressed at all was a miracle. "You spent two hours trying to decide which dress to wear. You normally pick the first one that matches."

"I get it!" Rose huffed. "I have issues!"

Lulu just snorted with laughter as they entered the pub. The Flash Dragon was fairly new, only having been established a few years ago now. Rose could still remember the highly memorable night where their entire team had come out here for opening night. There had been a fountain of Firewhiskey, a minor underwear fiasco, and Miles and Tony had finally kissed amongst raucous cheers. It was often crowded with young witches and wizards who were looking for a night out down Diagon Alley and with the bright and flashing lights, the thumping music and smell of spilt drinks, it was clear that it would be the nightmare of anyone who hated loud, crowded places.

Rose loved it.

Their team took up several tables, right in the middle of the pub. The bar ran along the back wall, where Travis and Noah were currently harassing the bartenders for drinks. When Lulu and Rose approached, several of their friends called out in greeting and despite her anxiety, Rose found herself smiling and calling out in return. There were roughly thirty of them working in the International Events Department, but only about half of that had actually come out tonight. A quick scan of the faces present told her a lot: Jasmine had cut her hair again, George totally still fancied Anna, Zoe was pissed off at someone, and Travis, moving back to the table with a tray of drinks, was definitely going to be spending the entire night flirting with Lulu.

They also told her that Malfoy wasn't there.

Thank the lord, she could breathe!

"Drink up!" Travis called, grinning underneath his ridiculously long fringe. Seriously, it was basically in his eyes and how he could see anything was beyond Rose. "We've only got two weeks left until the madness is over!"

"Hear, hear!" several of them cheered, the tray being passed around as Noah joined them with yet more alcohol.

"I dunno 'bout you lot, but I don't want it to be over," Noah said, sitting down next to Jasmine, who was on Rose's other side. "This is the best part of our job!"

"Speak for yourself, I haven't slept in weeks," Lulu sighed.

"You might've slept if you hadn't gone to a different party every weekend," Rose snorted.

"Oi!" Lulu cried, smacking Rose on the arm as the others all roared with laughter. "There was a reason for all of those parties! I was obligated to go."

"Yes, your cousin's new rabbit is a perfectly legitimate reason to get completely off your face and end up owling me from a Muggle nightclub," Rose said.

"A nightclub?" Travis put in then, clearly grinning at the way the conversation had gone. "I thought we were too old for that now?"

"You're never too old for nightclubs!"

"Do we even want to know what happened there?"

Lulu smirked. "Let's just say my cousin ended up on the other side of the bar and I … probably shouldn't finish that."

Travis complained at once, insisting that Lulu couldn't leave the story there. With so many people, several conversations had broken out, some mixing together, others in a world of their own. Hell, George and Anna spoke to no one but each other, sitting so closely, Rose almost thought they'd be in each other's laps soon. The team might have been made up by a bunch of crazy idiots … but Rose kind of adored her crazy idiots. They knew how to laugh and just relax, how to cheer her up if she was ever feeling stressed. In fact, almost half an hour passed in which Rose didn't even remember Malfoy at all! She ended up mostly talking to Jasmine and Noah, sharing stories of the past couple of weeks leading up to WAM.

But, naturally, things went pear-shaped. Don't they always?

"Oh, Rose, I've been meaning to ask you!" Jasmine said, her hand absently running over her shoulder, a left over habit from when she'd had dark hair inching down to her back, but was now cut around her ears. "Where were you after lunch yesterday? I needed to swap plans with you, but you just disappeared!"

"Oh, I'm sorry! I was …" Oh. Oh, dear. She had been busy hiding under a desk that time yesterday. "Um, with my cousin. Sorry, there was a bit of an emergency."

"Is everything all right?" Noah asked then, always concerned.

"Oh, we're both fine!" Rose insisted. "There was just … something came up that I had to discuss with him. Kind of couldn't wait."

"Oh, well, at least you actually get your plans in on time," Jasmine said then, smiling. "Unlike some other lazy buggers I could mention!" she added, shooting that comment straight at Noah.

"Hey! I get them in!"

"Yeah, hours late," Jasmine laughed. "It drives Scorpius Malfoy mental!"

"Malfoy?" Rose's heart suddenly kicked into overdrive. Oh my god, he couldn't be here, right? How could he possibly come up in their conversation if he wasn't here? What was happening? HELP!

"Yeah, he's my partner," Noah shrugged. "For WAM at least. We're supposed to be coordinating the schedule, but the bloke never lets me contribute! Just insists that with your lack of punctuality, the entire event would be sent into a cacophony of unorganised chaos."

Rose honestly tried not to laugh at Noah's impression of Malfoy's voice; it was harsh and stilted, not unlike how he talked in real life, though perhaps a little over-dramatised.

"I think you'll find that everything has to be perfect for that bloke," Rose told him.

"Yeah, I figured that out after one day of working with him!" Noah cried, gesturing wildly with his drink still in his hand. Both Jasmine and Rose had to shriek and duck out of the way of the splashing Firewhiskey. "I don't know what his problem is, but I'll seriously be glad when this is over and he goes back to ignoring everyone!"

"I don't get it," Jasmine said then, hesitantly leaning forward again and eyeing Noah's drink, should it make another surprise attack. "If he doesn't like socialising that much, why does he work in International Events? Hell, our entire job is about nothing but people!"

"If there's one good thing I can say about him, it's that he's organised," Noah shrugged. "Trust me, WAM would be taking place in a two-person tent if we didn't have Malfoy on the team."

"I dunno, I sort of agree with Jas," Rose said then. "This job needs someone who is enthusiastic and loves meeting new people! I don't know about you, but Malfoy doesn't exactly strike me as someone who is enthusiastic about anything–"

"Hey, guys!"

Rose almost fell off her stool. In her haste to spin and see the face connected to the voice, she had practically fallen to the floor and sure enough, Scorpius Malfoy was approaching them, an extremely scary smile on his face and waving out to their group.

Lord, oh, lord.

"… he came?" Jasmine asked, sounding stunned.

"What the hell?" Noah agreed.

"Oh, my god!" Rose hissed, managing to catch Lulu's eye, who had since moved further down the table to sit next to Travis and leaving the stool next to Rose completely free. Her friend, the bitch, didn't even make a move to help her! While Rose liked to think it was because she was busy engaged in conversation with Travis and didn't want to be discourteous, she knew it was mainly because she just liked to see Rose cringe.

Thanks a lot, mate.

Rose, Jasmine and Noah weren't the only ones staring. Almost all of them from their group were craning heads to see Malfoy gingerly manoeuvring between tables and dodging out of the way of drunk patrons. Rose might have simply Disapparated on the spot, but she couldn't think of any way to do so without seeming incredibly rude. Likewise, was there no escape route, the closest window being several feet away (not that she was actually considering legging it out a window … noooo, of course not …).

She couldn't believe this. He actually came to a pub. Willingly.

"Er, hello," he said, not quite catching her eye as he hesitantly sat down on the stool next to her. "How – how are you, Rose?"

"I …" Rose just gaped. There really was no way out of this, was there?

"Malfoy, mate!" Noah said, noticeably gob-smacked. "What're you doing here? I didn't think the pub was quite your scene!"

"Your view is understandable," Malfoy nodded, awkwardly. "However, tonight I decided that I should try and expand my list of activities to do outside of work."

Noah simply nodded. "Each to their own, mate," he muttered, before turning back to Jasmine.

Right. She was sorting this.

"Malfoy, what the hell are you doing?" Rose hissed.

"Um …" Malfoy was squirming slightly on this stool. "Honestly, I am unsure. I never actually thought I would get this far. It took me over an hour just to walk in here."

"Oh, god …" Rose couldn't believe this. In hindsight, she should have – Malfoy was nothing, if not determined! – but she had honestly not seen this coming. "Malfoy, look, if this is some hare-brained scheme to try and prove to me that we're not different–"

"Not hare-brained," Malfoy said. He spoke to the table top. "Just … I wanted to show you that I am not that person you seem to think I am. Admittedly, this is all sort of a nightmare," Malfoy added then, gesturing vaguely to the entire pub in general. "I feel sort of twitchy and it's somewhat concerning me to think that this stool probably hasn't been washed since the establishment opened … but I'm fine."

"Malfoy … you aren't," Rose said at once. She didn't even need to get inside his head for that answer, it was written all over his face. "Trust me, I can tell! Look, just go home. You hate being here and honestly, I really can't deal with this right now."

"I don't understand," Malfoy said, glancing up at her. "You like this sort of thing, don't you?"

"Yes, but you don't get it!" Rose said, exasperated now. "Malfoy, I spent this entire evening panicking, because I thought you were going to show up!"

"… panicking?"

"Yes, panicking!" Rose cried. She could tell that Noah and Jasmine behind her were not-so-subtly trying to listen in, so she added in a slightly lower voice. "Malfoy … this is embarrassing."

"I am making you feel embarrassed?"

"Yes," Rose said. "Because I know you came here because of me and I didn't want you to. I know you made a huge effort to come, but Malfoy, I just can't do this! I'm sorry, I hate making people feel upset or uncomfortable, but …"

"I understand," Malfoy said, quietly. "You want to turn me down, but don't know how to without hurting my feelings …" He didn't say the word, but Rose could hear it in his voice: again.

Rose rubbed her temple, moaning slightly. Then, she glanced up and saw Malfoy still watching her, and she grabbed his arm. "Come with me," she said and he followed her immediately.

She didn't stop storming off until they had reached the cobblestone street of Diagon Alley outside the pub. Rose knew that pretty much all of her friends had stared after them, but she didn't care. Rose let go of Malfoy the second they were outside and when she turned to face him in the dark cooling air, she noticed that his face seemed a little dumbstruck.

… had her touch managed to do that?

Not the point.

"Malfoy," she said at once. "The way to prove we're not different isn't to try and be like me."

Malfoy looked confused. "I don't know what else to do," he admitted.

"Malfoy, you can't change who you are!" Rose said, exasperatedly. "Would you honestly want me to fall in love with someone who's pretending to be someone else? I don't want you to try and change who you are and I would never ask you to!"

"Then … what am I meant to do?" Malfoy said, hands in pockets once more.

Rose almost felt like laughing.

"I don't know, Malfoy. Figure it out," was all she said, before turning and striding back to the pub and her friends.

A/N: Seriously guys, thank you SO MUCH for the feedback so far! I'm so glad that you're all looking forward to this. I apologise that this story currently doesn't obviously look like P&P - it's still a rather loose adaption - but all the bare basics of the Darcy/Lizzie plot are there I promise. I hope you enjoyed this one. :)

Some of you know that I always try to update my stories once a week. It feels so weird to be able to actually commit to it now, since I'm no longer at university! (For those curious, since finishing my degree, I now work as a nanny for a young family, until I go to the US in June). This story also shouldn't be that long (and I say 'shouldn't'… but I'm not even going to pretend I know where this is going, so who the hell knows really, haha).

Again, THANK YOU. I'm having so much fun with Darcy!Scorpius and Lizzy!Rose and I hope you are too. Please review and let me know what you think!

Until next time -

- Moon. :D
