That moment when you realize eeveelutions are 3 times the size of eevees... yeah... I just figured that out. It kinda puts my story in a weird perspective. How about you just pretent that they are the same size for this story, and I'll fix it in furture stories. Anyway, sorry this chapter took so long. It's my longest one yet with 5,202 words. This is also an emotianl chapter so it took a bit for me to get everything the way I wanted to. Anyway, enjoy.
The alarm was a lot louder than Meowth had thought it would be. Sure, it woke him up, but he wouldn't be surprised if it also woke up the pokémon he was spying on. By the time he was able to turn it off, Meowth was sure that someone below him had heard it, but looking at them, none of them appeared to be disturbed by the sound. There was a bit of stirring, but none of them actually awakened, which Meowth was grateful for.
Meowth crawled out of his sleeping bag that was hanging from one of the trees nearby the five pokémon that would soon be in their possession. The trick was somehow figuring out how to get the mightyena away from the others. He had an idea of how to do it, but it would be pretty risky. He started to slowly climb down the tree, aided by the light of the rising sun. Meowth stopped, however, when he heard some movement. He quickly scrambled back up the tree and back into his perch.
The cat looked down and saw the mightyena was getting up. Maybe she had been awakened by the alarm; Meowth didn't know. But the fact was that she was up now, which was going to make his plan a lot harder.
Or so he thought.
The mightyena stretched her back and then walked into the forest in a random direction. Meowth couldn't believe his luck! He had spent almost all day yesterday trying to figure out a way to get the mightyena alone away from her friends, and here she just does it on her own.
"Alright," Meowth whispered to himself. "Time to put into action stage two."
Kate needed some time alone. She wasn't much of an extrovert, so being around people all day was exhausting for her. The others would probably wonder where she went when they woke up, but she didn't care. She would come back when she wanted to. She just needed to travel with them for a little while longer until they reached Sam's house. Then she could continue on her way.
Speaking of Sam, Kate wondered what was up with that guy. He did act like others usually did. Also, for being a pokémon, he knew a lot about the word. He said he's literate, but Kate didn't buy that. There was something Sam was hiding from them, that she was sure of. It was what he was hiding that Kate wanted to figure out.
"'Ey you!" a voice came from somewhere to Kate's right. She turned and saw a meowth leaning up against a tree with his eyes closed.
"Yeah?" Kate said with scepticism in her voice.
"There's something I think you need to know."
"Do I know you?" Kate asked, wanting to know what this meowth was doing here. Kate also noted that he was speaking in human language, so she kept her wits about her.
"No, but I know you," the meowth said. He opened his eyes, but kept them in the same place that they were, not even glancing at the mightyena.
"Your name is Kate," the meowth said. Kate opened her mouth to say something but didn't get the chance before the cat started to talk again.
"You were separated from your pack when you were young by a trainer and now you want to get back at him and get your revenge." The meowth finally turned to look at Kate. "Is all that correct?"
"How did you know?" Kate asked astonished.
"I'll come clean with you," the meowth said while closing his eyes again, "I've been spying on you the whole time, since you joined your little gang."
This made Kate furious. She didn't like people spying on her.
"Why were you spying on us?!"
"Chill out," the meowth said calmly. "I'm only here to help you."
"Help me?"
"Yeah, you see, I was touched by your story, and now I want to help you get revenge."
"And how are you going to do that?" Kate asked.
"Well, I decided to go ahead of you guys and take a look around Sam's house, and here's what I found," the meowth said as he threw something red towards Kate. It landed next to the dark type. She looked at it, but it didn't seem familiar to her.
"What's this?" she asked.
"It called a Pokédex. It's a high tech device that automatically records any pokémon that humans catch. Now, look at who owns it."
Kate looked down at the screen display and saw a name in one of the corners
"Sam," she said aloud as she read it.
"The same name as that eevee you're traveling," the meowth stated the obvious.
"Yeah, but this doesn't tell me much. The owner just named Sam after himself."
"Not quite. Look at what pokémon the owner has yet to catch."
Kate did as she was told and scrolled through all the pokémon. One after another, they all had a pokéball icon beside them. That was, until she got to number 136. Flareon did not have one by its picture. She kept scrolling until she got to number 196. Espeon did not have one either. She kept going until she found mightyena. Not there. Glaceon? Not there either. This was too much of a coincidence. All the pokémon she had been trailing with including her self weren't captured yet.
Except for Sam.
The eevee had been captured.
"Get what I'm saying?" the meowth asked.
"So are you saying…" Kate trailed off as she, too, came to the realization. The meowth nodded.
"That Sam that you are traveling with is the same Sam who captured you all those year ago. He was accidentally turned into an eevee and is now having you guys help him get home. But he's going to capture you all once he's human to complete his pokédex."
Kate couldn't believe this. The Sam that he had traveled with all this time was the same person who had separated her from her pack. Kate knew that something was up with Sam, but she didn't expect this.
"Need anymore evidence?" the meowth asked rhetorically. "So you heard about a pokémon collector disappearing up north, right?"
"Yes." Kate confirmed. She, however, made the connection before the meowth could tell her.
"That pokémon collector, Sam, disappeared because he was turned into an eevee?"
"Bingo." the meowth said.
Kate dug her claws into the soft dirt of the ground. "I can't believe he tricked me!"
"So what are you waiting for, go get him."
"Right," Kate said as she sprinted back towards their camp.
After the footsteps had died down, Meowth let out a little laugh. He picked up a walkie talkie from where he had hid it behind the tree.
"This is Meowth, phase two was a success."
"Really?" Meowth hered James' voice over the walkie talkie. "Wow, guess I overestimated their intelligence. I didn't think it was going to work at all. I mean, who had ever heard of a human turning into a pokémon."
"Well, it helps that I made this really good decoy," Meowth said as he went over to the Pokédex that was still on the ground. He took it and threw it up against a tree. It broke open, but instead of nuts, bolts, electronic chips, -things that you would expect to be in a pokédex- coming out, just a slip of paper on a wheel came out. "That thing worked like a charm."
"I guess it also helps that we had all the coincidences. Like the real pokémon collector being gone as well as the eevee's home being the same one as that one collector."
"Yeah, those helped. But now that I've done my part, it's time to activate phase three. Get them before they realize this was all a scam. "
"Right, I'll get Jessie and we'll get going."
"Roger."
By the time that Sam woke up, the sun was already coming up. He was shivering in the winter cold. He was about to get up, to stretch, but stopped when he felt something heavy on his side. Sam looked over to see that Lily had fallen asleep on his side. He let out a smile. He didn't know that he had decided to sleep so close to Lily.
Guess that's why I'm so cold, Sam thought. Because he didn't want to wake her, Sam decided to stay put, even if it was really cold. He looked around and saw that Kate and Cassius were not anywhere around the fire. Sam found Cassius a little ways away from their campsite, looking at the sun as always, but he was unable to find where Kate had gone.
Lily must of felt his stirring, because she too woke up. She let out a yawn.
"Have a nice sleep?" Sam asked.
"Yeah, thanks," Lily replied with a smile. "You?"
"A bit cold, but other than that, it was good enough."
"Oh, sorry," Lily realized that she was probably freezing Sam. She got off of him, making Sam infinitely warmer. "I guess I'm still getting used to being a glaceon," Lily said with a little blush.
"That's alright," Sam said, not bothered at all.
"Where's Kate?" Lily asked looking around.
"I was wondering that myself."
"She most likely just went on a walk," Cassius said as he walked towards the two. "She didn't seem to me like a pokémon that liked to be around others. She'll be back soon."
With that, Lily limped over to where her brother lay to wake him up. Sam got up and stretched his legs.
"Come on, sleepyhead; it's time to get up," Lily said as she nudged Drake awake.
"So, how does it feel to almost be home?" Cassius asked Sam.
"It feels really good," Sam said with a joyous expression. That expression, however, disappeared as he added, "I think."
"You think?"
"Well…" Sam trailed off as he looked over to where Drake and Lily were. Drake was groggily waking up as Lily prodded him some more. "...I just… don't want to leave you guys."
"But you do want to go home, right?" Cassius guessed.
"I do," Sam confirmed. "I just wish I could stay with you guys once I'm back as a human."
"How do you know that the others aren't going to want to stay with you?"
"Because they think that I'm just an eevee. They don't think that I'm actually a human. They wouldn't accept me for who I really am."
"Hmm…"
Suddenly, Kate bursted through the trees and looked straight at Sam.
"Oh, there you are Kate," Cassius said with a happy demeanor.
"Sam…" she said slowly.
"Yeah?" Sam said back just as slowly. Something was wrong with Kate, and Sam knew it.
"I want you to tell us the truth."
"The truth?" Sam asked. In the back of his mind, however, he knew exactly what she was talking about.
"I know that you're not a real eevee. Tell us who are you really are."
The whole clearing was silent. It stayed that way for a while. No one said anything for the longest time. Finally, Lily spoke up.
"Sam, what is Kate talking about?" she said in confusion.
Sam didn't know what to say. He had no idea how Kate figured out, but she did, and that was the important thing. Sam opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. He looked over to Cassius for advice.
"I… think it's about time that you told them," Cassius said in a serious tone of voice, his usual happiness non-present.
"You knew about this!?" Kate practically yelled at the espeon. He didn't respond.
Sam looked at the ground. He knew that he would have to tell them at some point, but he never expected it to be like this.
"Kate's right," he said after taking a deep breath. "I'm not an eevee." Sam looked up at everyone's expressions. Drake and Lily just looked bewildered while there was hatred in Kate's eyes. Sam stood tall and puffed out his chest. "My name is Samuel Timothy Evans. I am a sixteen-year-old human and a pokémon collector. I went out to try and capture an eevee, but something went wrong and I somehow got turned into the eevee. Now I'm just trying to get back home."
There was more silence as everyone took in the new information. Sam looked back at the ground, not daring to look at any of his friends, though he doubted they were even his friends anymore. After a long time, Lily spoke up.
"It…can't be true," she stuttered. Sam remained silent as he continued to stare at the ground. "Sam…tell me… it's not true."
Silence.
"Sam… tell me it's not true!" Lily said again, but this time it was obvious in her voice that she was holding back tears. Sam still didn't look up. "SAM!" Lily yelled. She didn't want to believe it. She didn't want it to be true. The eevee that they had been traveling all this time with, her friend, was nothing more than a human who collected pokémon for his own good. Sam finally looked up from the ground and looked at Lily. She had tears streaming down her face. The look of sadness and betrayal were in her eyes.
"I'm sorry," Sam whispered to no one in particular. He continued to stand there, not knowing what else to do.
"All you wanted to do was take us to your home and then capture us!" Kate yelled. Sam couldn't respond.
"I knew you couldn't be trusted," Drake said. "You humans are all the same. Liars. Come on Lily, let's get out of here." Drake started to turn away and walk back, but he stopped when he saw that Lily wasn't with him. "Lily?"
"Sam…" Lily whispered and then fell to the ground. There was some more silence.
"So long have I waited for this day to get revenge on you," Kate spoke, getting the the real part of why she revealed it to everyone. "And that day is finally here." Kate jumped over to where Sam was and punched him right in the head. Sam backed away from Kate as he recovered from his headshot. Kate ran over to him and opened her mouth showing her fangs. Sam, not having any energy to fight back, braced himself for the hit. But instead of him feeling pain, it was Kate who felt pain my smashing her face into an invisible wall that was right in front of Sam. Once the mightyena had recovered, she looked over to the only one who could have done that.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Kate yelled at the espeon who had gotten into a battle stance by this point.
"Look, I know that you want to get revenge, but I told Sam that I would protect him to the very end, and I'm not about to go back on my word," Cassius responded. This was the most that Sam had ever seen the psychic-type fired up. Drake and Lily were watching this all from a distance.
Drake didn't say anything. He was having a mix of feeling because of what was happening. Lily, however, was not silent.
"Stop fighting!" she shouted. Lily was still crying, and that was apparent in her voice. "Sam's done nothing wrong! Just because he's a human doesn't mean you should hurt him!"
"He took me away from my family. I had to grow up in the wild by myself because of him," Kate rebutted.
"Sam's a good person. He would never do something like that on purpose," Lily yelled back.
Before Kate could respond, a net the seemed to appear out of nowhere wrapped itself around Kate, Sam and Cassius. Another one got Drake as he started to dodge it, but the net was coming too fast, making his dodging attempt unsuccessful. The two nets started to lift off of the ground. All four of them looked up to see who had captured them. Above them was a hot air balloon in the shape of a meowth. From in side of it, a man and a woman were maniacally laughing.
"Nice shot, James," the female said.
"Thanks, Jessie. I've been training," the male responded as he put down the net rocket that he had used to trap them. Since the net's were automatically tied to the side of the balloon, Sam, Kate, Cassius, and Drake were all being lifted into the air. Sam looked at the uniforms of the two. They had a different color scheme than normal, but the large red 'R' was unmistakable.
"It's Team Rocket!" Sam shouted.
"Hang on, you missed one," Jessie said as she pointed to Lily, completely ignoring the cries of the pokémon trapped in their net.
"Well let's fix that!" James said as he picked the net launcher back up and shot it towards Lily. The glaceon tried to jump out of the way, but was unable to because of her leg. Lily let out a small yelp of pain when she put pressure on it before she, too, was taken up by a net.
"There we go," James said triumphantly.
Sam knew that he had to get out of the net, but he didn't know how. He looked over to where Drake was and saw that he was burning through the rope by lighting a small flame in his mouth. It didn't take long for the ropes to snap and Drake fell from the net to the ground, which he wasn't that far from, thankfully.
In Sam's net, he looked over to see Kate gnawing at the net with her sharp fangs. Sam and Cassius didn't have nearly as pointed teeth, but they tried their best as well. The three of them were eventually able to get through, mostly because of Kate, and fell to the ground as well. Their fall was a little worse than Drake's, but it wasn't bad.
Jessie and James exclaimed when they looked down and saw that they were now four pokémon short.
"Hey! I'll have you know we make those nets ourselves!" James shouted from atop his perch.
"I'd say let's cut our losses and leave," Jessie suggested.
"Right," James agreed. He started to pull the net the contained the glaceon up into the balloon. Lily couldn't get out herself because of her wound as well as the fact that she didn't have fire nor sharp fangs like the others did. Drake growled as he thought about what to do. He knew that he couldn't burn the net with Ember at this distance without risking hurting Lily. He also knew that shooting down the balloon would make it come crashing down and would also possibly injure Lily even more.
James was able to pull the net with Lily up into their balloon. After which, he promptly took her out of the net and pushed her into a cage, closing the cage and locking it. James' hands were freezing, even through his gloves, because he had just carried an ice type. He tried to ignore it for now. He could warm them up later. The four on the ground could do nothing but watch the balloon drift farther and farther away.
Lily was desperately trying to get out, but the steel bars proved too strong for her ice attacks.
"There's no way that we'll be able to shoot it down without hurting Lily, so we need to follow it until they land," Drake suggested.
"Right," Kate agreed.
"I'm coming, too," Sam said.
"No, you're not!" Drake bursted out. "I won't let you get close to her. All you want to do is capture her and use her to complete your 'pokédex'. You capture pokémon for your own pleasure. Really, you're not different from those thieves."
Sam thought about this. No different from those thieves? No, that couldn't be, right? He was better than them.
"Come on Cassius, let's go after them," Kate said to her psychic companion, the hostility between them had completely disappeared.
Cassius shook his head. "You two go after her, I'll catch up later. I need to do something first."
Both Kate and Drake were confused by this.
"I said that I would take Sam to his home, and I will fulfill that."
"Even though you just figured out that he's a human and a pokémon collector?" Drake asked.
"I've known that for quite some time, actually," Cassius answered calmly. "I've made my choice, so I'll join you once I get Sam back to his home."
Drake and Kate still didn't get why Cassius wanted to help Sam, but they knew that his mind wasn't going to change, so they headed off in the direction of the balloon.
Sam was still recovering from what Drake had said when Cassius went over to him.
"Come on, let's get you home," Cassius said.
"Right…" Sam replied, still lost in his thoughts. Cassius lead the way while Sam followed. With them being down three members, it was a lot quieter than it usually was. The only sound was the chirping of the occasional pidgey.
"I hope you know that the reason I defended you back there and the reason I'm taking you to your house is not just because I said I would," Cassius broke the silence.
"What do you mean?" Sam asked, thinking that was the only reason that Cassius hadn't gone with the others.
"I don't think that you're just a heartless person that collects pokémon like the others do. From my experience of you in the past few days, that doesn't sound like you."
"Maybe…" Sam said, what Drake said still on his mind, "I just…don't know what to do." Sam had been so lost in thought that he hadn't realized he was in a familiar part of the forest. Indeed, after a minute more of walking, Sam and Cassius approached a large mansion.
"Didn't know that it was this close." Cassius said. "Anyway, I believe that this is your house."
"It is," Sam said. He wondered how Cassius knew that this was his house, but he didn't have the energy or the enthusiasm to ask him. "Thanks, Cass, I guess,"
Cassius nodded his head. "I assume that you can make it to the door from here, so I'm going to go catch up with the others."
"RIght," Sam said. He walked up the steps to his door.
"Hey, Sam?" Cassius said to get his attention.
"Yeah?"
"I know you will make the right choice."
With that, the pink pokémon turned around and started off in the direction that the balloon had went.
Sam looked back at the door that he had so many times entered and exited in his lifetime. The eevee took a deep breath and then rammed his head against the door as hard as he could.
Steven didn't need to get up early this morning, so he didn't. He slept in. After a while though, his automatic body clock kicked in and he couldn't go back to sleep. He decided that he might as well get up and make some breakfast. Still in his night clothes, Steven got up and went down the stairs. Since you had to go through the living room to get the the kitchen, Steven took a right once he was down the stairs.
To say he was surprised would be an understatement.
Inside of their living room, instead of the couches and small tables they usually had, two huge machines had taken their place. They were tall cylinder like structures of metal with tons of cords connecting the two. Behind the second one, a man about the same age as Steven was kneeling down, screwing in something that looked like a bolt. He had clothes on the looked like he was going to a colonial times reenactment. He looked up when he noticed Steven standing there.
"Greetings and good morning!" he said in a cheery voice. He got on onto his feet and went over to the butler. "You must be Steven; Jason told me about you." The man took Steven's hand and shook it. "My name is Bill." Steven was still recovering from all this because it happened so fast. He did eventually grasp what was happening, if just on a very small level.
"Are you possibly the same Bill that runs the P.C. system?" Steven asked, knowing that he looked familiar.
"Indeed I am," Bill replied while going back to work on the machine. Steven's head was still buzzing with a lot of questions. He started with the elephant in the room. Or in this case, the giant hunk of metal.
"What is this large machine here?" he asked.
"Did Jason not tell you?" Bill asked back.
"Tell me what?"
"Oh, I just thought Jason would have told you why I'm here," Bill said while screwing in another part of the machine. "This must all be pretty weird then."
"It is, yes," Steven confirmed.
"Well, Jason didn't give me the specifics, but he said something about needing a human that was turned to a pokémon to be able to turn back in a human. So I came up here early in order to be able to set this thing up."
Steven didn't think that it was possible, but asking that question just left him with more questions.
"I…" Steven started to say.
"Don't worry Steven, it's alright," a voice from behind Steven said. He turned around to see Jason standing there.
"Jason, please tell me what's going on. What is he talking about, turning a pokémon back into a human?"
"You'll find out soon," Jason said.
A very loud knock resonated from the front door, which started Steven a bit.
"I'll get that," he volunteered as he went over to the door. Once again, a knock came from the door that sounded like someone was banging their head against it. "I'm coming!" Steven called out. He opened the door once he got their, but there was no one outside.
Maybe it's a package, Steven thought. He looked down on the door step.
Indeed, the thing on the doorstep was small and brown, but if was far from a package.
"Eevee!" the little small brown bundle of fur said.
If Steven was confused before, he was downright perplexed now.
"He-hello?" Steven said out of nothing better to say. After all, it isn't everyday an eevee just walkes up to your door.
"Eev-eevee!" the pokémon continued. Steven wished he knew what it was saying. Steven bent down and picked up the eevee. "What is a little eevee like you doing here?" Steven asked himself.
"That's no eevee," Jason said as he came up behind Steven. "That's Master Samuel."
If Steven was downright perplexed before, he was 'what-the-heck-is-going-on' now.
"See, I knew Samuel would be coming back, so I asked Bill here to set up his machine.
Steven was still processing the fact the this eevee was Samuel. "Is… is he correct?" Steven asked the eevee in his hands.
"Eevee!" the pokémon said while nodding.
"Well… okay then… I…guess," Steven stuttered and handed 'Samuel' over to Jason. Jason and Steven then went back over to where Bill was.
"Is it all ready?" Jason asked.
"Yup, just finished up," Bill replied and then stepped back to look at his handiwork. "So where's the pokémon?" Bill said before he saw Sam in Jason's hands.
"Alright then, we're going to put you into the the right machine, and you will come out of the left, while the eevee that you had transformed into will come out the right," Bill explained.
"Sounds good," Jason said as he went over to the right machine and put Sam into it. He then stepped back while Bill went over to the control panel. He pressed a few buttons and then turned a switch on.
"Are you ready?" Bill asked.
"-vee" Sam let out while nodding his head. Steven thought it might just be him, but 'Samuel' look really sad for some reason. It could just be the fact that he was an eevee.
"Alright," Bill went over and closed the doors on both of the devices He pulled a lever on the control panel. A blinding blue light came out of the device making everyone shield their face from it. After a few seconds, the light died down, allowing everyone to look back at the machines.
The left door opened, and out came a boy with black hair, in a suit.
Sam stumbled out of the machine. He felt weird, like he was missing something. He suddenly realized that he couldn't feel his front legs. He looked down, and only saw one pair of legs, and they were very high off the ground. He looked at his hands, and saw fingers and skin where there had been paws and fur. He was back as a human.
Sam looked over to the other machine. Out came a small eevee, who was very confused as how it got inside a large house. Bill soon picked up the small creature and started to pet it. The eevee liked that very much.
Sam heard voices of people in the room saying things like, "Welcome back," "I had no idea you've been a pokémon this whole time," "How does it feel to be back as a human," but none of those voices really seemed to register with him. He was still thinking about what had happened earlier that day.
"Hey, guys," Sam was finally able to say, "I know you are glad that I'm back, but I think that I need some time alone."
"That is fine," Jason responded. Sam excused himself and went up the stairs into his room. He closed the door and sat on his bed.
A lot had happened in the past few days, and he was running it all through his head. About all the experiences he had with his friends.
Were they his friends though? After the pain and betrayal he put them through, could they really be his friends anymore? They probably didn't think of him as friend after what happened. In fact, Sam knew they didn't. Thinking of friends, however, made Lily's voice pop into his head.
"That's what friends are for."
No. Sam wasn't going to give up that easily. Maybe they wouldn't acknowledge him as a friend anymore, but he acknowledged them. He was going to go help Lily, his friend. He knew that it would be the least he could do.
Sam practically jumped off his bed. He grabbed his pokédex from the shelf it was on and ran out of his room. He jumped down the stairs, skipping every other one. He was about to run out of the house before Jason stopped him.
"Master Samuel, where are you going, you've only just arrived."
Sam didn't look back at him, but instead, smiled.
"I'm going to help a friend," he replied simply. With that, Sam ran out of the house, slamming the door behind him.
To this, Jason could only smile himself.
"Look's like it worked after all."
Getting close to the end. Thanks for reading.
