Chapter 7: Something Amazing
Jess came in last night with a smile on her face, went to bed with a smile on her face, and she plans to have that smile on her face the rest of the weekend. Last night was the best night she had ever had in her life. No man that she had ever gone out with had ever been so kind, funny, caring and wanting to be with her and only her; even her long time ex-boyfriend Spencer was never that attentive. She could only wish that Nick felt the same connection she did.
Lost in her thoughts Jess was unaware of the cheeky smile her long-time friend CeCe was giving her. "Someone looks happy? Is this got to do with you coming in at 11 last night?"
Breaking out of her thoughts Jess shook her head "What? … What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about dropping you off at the bar at 6:30 and you not coming home until gone 11"
Jess looked down and blushed a little, "We um might have gone and got some late dinner."
"Oh My Gosh Jess I need details and I need them now!"
"Ok, ok I've gone ½ an hour till I need to leave so…"
Jess then spent the next ½ and hour explaining in full to her roommate what had happened the night before. Every detail from the conversation they had to the colour of his shirt.
"Then he walked me to the door and we said goodnight, he leaned and kissed me on the cheek and before I knew it were kissing." A dreamy look fell across her face as she remembered the feel of his lips on hers. This did not go unnoticed by CeCe; she clicked her fingers in front of her face waking her from the day dream she had fallen into. "Jess, Jess ..."
"What?"
"Wow I've never seen you like this before, you really do like this guy don't you."
Jess yet again blushed at the direct point CeCe had made "…I think this could be something amazing. He's one of the nicest guys I have ever met and he loves Matt so much, and he listens to what I say unlike other exes."
"Well Jess if you like him go for it make it official already. I really want you to be happy."
"You know what CeCe I might just do that." After that left Jess' mouth she felt a new kind of feeling in the pit of her stomach. What if he doesn't feel the same way? But he did seem to like me last night? Panic, worry, and doubt fled her mind, should she be the one to make the first move? But her thoughts were interrupted again by CeCe. "Jess don't worry about it but you best get going or you'll be late for work."
With that Jess grabbed her bag, keys and jacket and left with a quick goodbye to CeCe she was gone.
"Hello?"
"Hey Nick it's me Jamie. I was wondering if you could do me a favour."
"Depends on the favour, but I'm open minded."
"Well, I have to stay late at work on Monday because of next month anyway could you look after Matt after school. Dana's doctor wanted her to rest and I know you and Matt have gotten closer, it would only be to about 8pm."
"I think that should be alright am I picking him up from school?"
"Yeah if that's ok with you."
"Yeah, Yeah that's fine I have to get back to work. See you Monday."
"You're the best big brother a guy could ever want thanks."
Nick hung up the phone the smile that was already playing at his lips got even bigger. Seeing Matt was always great he loved that little guy but the reason for the growing grin was because of a certain teacher that works there. Last night was the best night of his entire pathetic life. How can he be 37 and only just now have the best date of his life. The one repeating thought that Nick had was he wanted have an official date. Now he had the perfect opportunity to 'bump' into her and make sure she knows it's a real date this time. It was 10:30am, Matt should be up.
After 3 rings Matt picked up "Hey Nick, you ok? You never call during school."
"Just called to ask if you wanted to catch a movie on Monday after I pick you up from school?"
"Yeah that sounds great Nick, but I can't help but think there is another motive to this call because normally you would just text me."
"Uhh…What why can't an uncle just want to actually talk to his nephew."
"Because this particular nephew has a teacher that this said uncle has a MASSIVE crush on."
Matt heard Nick sigh through the phone. "Fine you caught me I was just wondering if there was a way that you could subtly get her to see me."
Matt was just about to leave to meet his friends, "I'm sure I can think of something, Nick I'm just about to meet Sam and Jake see you Monday."
"Thanks Matt see you soon."
Nick let out a breath he didn't know he was holding he was just hoping Matt could come up with something, that was a lot of pressure to put on a 7 year old. Nick carried on the paper work he was working his way through but not really thinking about what he was doing all that was on his mind was sparkling blue eyes, deep brown curls falling delicately on her shoulders ; pink lips that were ever so kissable. His dreaming kept going and time just flew by.
Jess was finishing off helping Candice at the children's museum she volunteers at. It was 4:50pm and she was just about to leave. Even though she was there she was really just going through the motions her mind was elsewhere. CeCe really struck a chord "make it official" what if Nick didn't feel the same. She decided to take the rest of the weekend to think about what she was going to do. She would love to take the next step but she just had to gain a major confidence boost.
"Jess thanks for all your help I'll see you next Saturday"
Jess was woken from her thoughts, "No problem I always enjoy it. Yeah I'll see you next week."
Candice looked at her "Are you ok Jess you look like you have a hundred things on your mind."
"Yeah I'm fine… it's just I can't decide if I should do something." She looked at Jess "This is about a man isn't it." Jess looked down not wanting to bring someone else into the pit that was her love life. "Yes" she muttered.
"I knew it, you haven't had a boyfriend since you worked here at what has that been like 4 years. So who is it, how did you meet, no start with the most important part have you been out with him yet?"
Jess looked up realising she had no other option "His name is Nick and he is the uncle of one of my students, and we kinda went out last night but I don't know if it was an official date or anything it was kinda just happened."
"Oh my Jess, tell me about last night."
"Well I went to the bar he manages and we went out for a late dinner. We talked about everything I guess, but the official 'terminology' was used"
"Ok let me just ask one thing… did you kiss?"
"Umm…Yes, when he…uhhh…walked me to the door"
Candice was pretty much jumping at this point "Jess that is a date, and talking about everything only men who are really interested do that men that don't care would run when real conversation was said."
"Calm down, I guess you have a point he did volunteer to help out at a school trip with his Nephew and would always want to talk about stuff like that."
"What! He helped out at your work this stuff only happens in the movies." Jess was now blushing at Candice's exclamation. "So when are you gunna make it official?"
"I don't know"
"Come on Jess make a move, how many guys would give up their day to help with a school activity?"
"Well he didn't do it for me he did it for his Nephew." Candice did a deep sigh "Jess stop making excuses, did he try to always talk to you or stand next to you or hug you or what?" Jess nodded to all of this shyly. "There's your answer Jess go for it, ok take the weekend to think then the next time you see him kiss his face off!"
"Candice, but I think your right, you and CeCe are. But I just need to think a bit more. Maybe I'll go to his bar after work on Monday."
"Good idea Jess."
Jess looked at her watch it had gone 5 and she was meeting CeCe soon to get some dinner. "Ok I've got to go I'll think about what you said, I might not be so direct though." Jess let out a small laugh "So I'll see you later."
"Bye Jess see you next week and I want to hear all the details." Jess waved to Candice as she left the museum.
The Sunday came and went, before Nick knew it, it was Monday and he only had half an hour before he picked up Matt, he kept wondering if he had come up with a good plan. There was a lot of trust between uncle and nephew. Nick looked at his watch again and decided to leave it took 15 minutes any way. He walked out of the office and saw Big Bob serving a customer. Nick made his way to the bar, "Hey Bob I'll be back around 9pm, Jeff and Luke should be here at 6 for the evening shift to take over."
"That's fine Nick go and pick up your Nephew."
"Thanks Bob see you tomorrow."
"Bye Nick." Nick left the bar and went to his car once inside he lent his head against the steering wheel, and action he only did when he had a lot to think about. Questions surrounded his thinking. Does Jess like him? Does she want to see him again? Will she go on another date with him? Wait what was he going to say? He was thinking so much about how to see her again he completely forgot to think about the next step. He was thinking for so long an alarm went off on his phone telling him that he had to leave, he was sat there for 15 minutes. Being unable to think any longer Nick put his foot on the gas and left for the school. When he had pulled up to the school he was getting out the car and saw an excited Matt running towards him with a cheeky grin on his face.
"Hey buddy, what's the smile about and where's your backpack?"
"Oh I must have left in my class room with my teacher. You know when Stacey left her bag the other day our teacher brought it out to her before she left. So maybe if we wait she will come out with it." While Matt was speaking and putting extra emphasis on the word teacher realisation was hitting Nick.
Nick ruffled his hair "I knew I left this plan in great hands" Nick straightened out his shirt fixed his hair "Matt how do I look, oh my word I sound like a girl."
"Nick you look fine and no better or worse than you did the first time you meet so you have nothing to worry about." Matt gave a sly smirk.
"Thanks for those great words of confidence there Matt," the statement dripping with sarcasm.
Nick looked back up at the school and saw a abundance of blue bouncing down the stairs of the front of the school with Matt's backpack in toe.
Jess hadn't thought about who would be picking Matt up assuming it was his father like normal Jess just came out of the school like she normally would, not looking up to far she spotted Matt but not Nick. Walking up to the pair "Hey Matt you left your backpack in…" Jess stopped she had fully looked up and had locked eyes with the rugged bartender in front of her "Oh thanks Miss Day I'll be taking that," Matt took the bag out of Jess' hands "uh huh" was the only half response he got "I'll just be in the car." Matt left the pair and made his way to the passenger side of Nick's car.
Nick was the first to break the silence that was spread over them, "Hey Jess"
"He-y Ni—ic—k" Jess stuttered out still in a little bit of shock from seeing him, and the words of Candice flowing through her mind next time you see him kiss his face off! Was that really the best idea? Without either of them realising they had walked closer to each other and were only a few inches away from each other. "So how have you umm been?" Nick asked, not feeling awkward but nervous.
"I'm good, what about you"
"Yeah I'm good to. I had a really good time the other night."
"I did to." Jess blushed slightly.
"I was umm thinking if you umm wanted to uhhh go out like again?"
Jess smiled looking in Nick's deep brown eyes "That sounds wonderful." Jess let out a small giggle "you don't have to be so nervous." Jess may have been putting on a cool façade but inside she was a mess. Nick smiled and relaxed a bit which made Jess' stomach settle a little.
"So when's a good day for you?"
"I'm free tomorrow evening"
"Sounds great, I can leave the bar about 6"
"Great I can meet you there"
"Nah I want to do this right, I'll pick you up at say 7?" Jess smile grew bigger, Nick wanted to do romance. That was more than she could ever hope for. "Ok, do you still remember where I live from when you dropped me off?"
"Yeah I remember."
"Great, oh do you want my number?"
"That be great." Once numbers were exchanged they feel back into a comfortable silence, both had smiles on their faces, this moment was broken when Matt totted the horn breaking the trance Nick turned back to Matt he was tapping his watch like if there was a watch there, they were going to miss their movie. "I gotta go Matt and I are seeing a movie so I'll see you tomorrow night?"
"Yeah, perfect I'll see you enjoy your movie."
Time stood still both leaning forward lips meeting lips for the second time, fireworks going off in their heads. Perfect!
Pulling apart out of breath and smiling, Nick said "So tomorrow?"
"Yeah see you." Jess turned to walk back to the school smile staying on her face, while Nick got into the car with Matt. "Well that seemed to go well."
Nick smiled at Matt "Guess who's got a date?"
Matt smiled, he was really happy for his uncle. They both high fived laughed and drove off to their movie.
Just as Matt and Nick were high fiving Jess turned around to see, her smile got even bigger she was so happy. This was looking to be the best year of her life.
