Chapter 8: Date?
It was 6:50pm Jess was looking at herself in the mirror for the 20th time in the last hour. She had changed her outfit six and has only just settled on keeping her hair down. Saying she was nervous was the understatement of the century. This wasn't the first date she had gone on in the last 7 years but it was the first she actually felt something more than a physical attraction to the counterpart. She looked over herself over again she was wearing a red dress with a sweetheart neckline that went in at the waist and fell just above the knee, with a black belt and black high heels.
"Jess you look great stop worrying. You look great; Nick will be lost for words."
"Oh CeCe I'm just so nervous…" Before Jess could finish her train of thought there was a knock at the door. "I'll get keep them guessing right Jess?" Jess let out a small giggle letting CeCe answer the door.
She opened the door to see a man in a plain black suit with a bunch of roses in his hand, a small nervous smile of his face. "You must be Nick? I'm CeCe, Jess' roommate."
Nick reached out his hand to shake hers and smiled "Yeah I'm Nick, it's nice to meet you Jess has told me a lot about you. Talking about Jess is she ready?"
"Yeah she's just coming why don't you come in for a second." Nick smiled and stepped inside the apartment, CeCe just went to what he assumed was a bedroom to get Jess, why did he feel like he was 16 again waiting to pick up his prom date? That's when he heard a door creek, he looked up to see Jess walking out of the room, and she was beautiful. He had never seen someone look so gorgeous. Lost for words he started sputtering like an idiot, "He—ey , JJeesss.. Yo..oou loo..ook wonderful." Jess let out a small giggle looking down and blushed. "Thanks Nick, you look great too."
They both smiled at each other, falling into their own little world, Nick shook his head to wake up from "umm these are for you." He smiled passing Jess the flowers, she smiled looked down at them a smelled them "They're beautiful Nick, thank you." No one has ever bought her flowers. "Ok you crazy kids I'll take these and put them in a vase for you and you can get going." CeCe took the flowers out of Jess' hands and practically pushed them out of the door.
Nick smiled at Jess. He had thought hard about this date, he had made reservations at a restaurant that Schmidt recommended, normally he wouldn't be able to afford Schmidt's taste but now managing the bar he had bigger income. Then he was planning a walk down the beach in the moonlight, he brought a blanket and a bottle of wine, not his favourite but he knew Jess liked it, and he thought watching the stars is always romantic. Reaching the car Nick put his gentlemen attributes into action, opening the car door for Jess smiling and gently closing it, to make his way around to the driver's side. Unfortunately once he had stepped into the car his phone began ringing. "Sorry I thought I turned that on silent."
"Don't worry."
"I'll just get rid of them." Nick pulled out his phone, thinking it would be big Bob panicking again but he was surprised to see Jamie's face pop up he knew Nick had this date tonight he was there when he made it. Nick looked at Jess and said, "I have to take this it's Jamie and something must be wrong for him to ring when he knew I had plans"
"Nick, don't stress, your brother's more important."
Nick quickly answered the phone, "Hey buddy what's wrong?"
"Nick you have to get to the hospital, Dana's gone into premature labour I don't know what to do please just hurry. I'm so sorry for disturbing you on your date but I need my brother, please."
"Jamie calm down I'm on my way and don't worry this is very important, I'll be there in 10. Is there anything you need?"
"No, but thanks so much for coming see you soon."
"Bye"
Nick hung up the phone worry etched on his face momentarily forgetting what was happening. "Nick is everything ok you seem stressed."
"uhh.. Jamie … baby…Dana ….Hospital."
"Nick is the baby coming?"
Nick shook his head coming out of his daze. "Yeah I have to get to the hospital, she wasn't due for another month and Jamie is freaking out."
"Then step on it."
"You don't mind this wasn't exactly what I had planned."
"Nick listen to me nothing is more important than family and I would be more upset us going out to dinner than going to support your family in their time of need."
"Thanks Jess, but you don't have to come."
"I may have said that I didn't want to go to dinner but this is still a date and nothing is going to stop me spending time with you."
"Well ok then fasten your seatbelt and let's get this show on the road."
It took them just over 10 minutes to get to the hospital, Nick and Jess quickly left the car running into the reception of the hospital. Nick ran up to the desk Jess close behind, "Um I'm here to see Dana Miller."
"Name and Relation please?"
"Nick Miller and I'm her brother in law."
"Can I see some ID please?"
"Sure," Nick pulled out his driver's licence. The nurse looked over at it, "Ok, down the hall take the lift to the 4th floor and turn left to P block."
"Thanks." With that Nick and Jess made their way to Dana.
Once in the correct corridor they found Jamie and Matt in the waiting room, Jamie looked up, stress clearly etched onto his face, and saw Nick quickly getting up and running to hug him.
Jamie started rambling, Nick unable to decipher what he was trying to say. "Jamie, Jamie calm down," he started breathing again, "Jess will you sit with Matt while I try and find out what's going on?"
"Yeah that's fine Nick." Jess gave a small smile and squeezed Nick's arm in a supportive way and walked over to the young boy.
"Ok what's going on Jamie? Tell me slowly."
"Well, we were at home watching a movie and Dana started to have stomach pains, but she didn't know why, she was in so much pain we immediately thought it was best to come down here. The doctors said there was some complications and that they had to do an emergency caesarean. She was just rushed into surgery when I rang you. I don't know what to do, I mean what complications can be that bad that she is in surgery…" He started talking a mile a minute and Nick could no longer understand what he was saying. "Jamie it's all gunna be ok, Dana will be ok, and the baby will be ok. They will come out of surgery and you'll have a healthy baby and a healthy wife. Nothing is gunna go wrong. Why don't you take Matt and go get yourself a drink, calm down, Jess and I will stay here and call if we hear anything."
Meanwhile…
"Thanks for coming Miss Day, I'm sorry your date was ruined."
"Matt don't worry about it, I just hope you don't feel I'm imposing? And you can call me Jess outside of the classroom."
"Thanks, no it's nice you being here, I've always wanted my uncle to have a friend."
"Well I'm glad I could be your uncle's friend." Jess said smiling.
"Wait if you and my uncle know each other does that mean I get out of homework?"
"Let me think about that? Umm… No. Sorry Matt, but look you don't have to stress these next few weeks until your mom's ok; and I'll know if your mom's better with me being friends with your uncle and all." Jess smiled and Matt laughed with her.
With that Nick and Jamie made their way over to them. "Hey, thanks for watching Matt for me," Jamie said looking at Jess he turned back to Matt, "Do you wanna grab a drink and something to eat from the canteen?"
"Sure Dad." Matt smiled at Jamie and Nick, getting up to walk away with his dad Matt turned to Jess, "Thanks again Miss Da... Oh I mean Jess." Leaving on that Matt and Jamie left.
Nick replaced Matt in his seat and turned to Jess, "So you two seemed to get along?"
"Yeah he's a great kid. Trying to get out of homework but great none the less. I said he doesn't have to stress while his mom's unwell, I said you'd me when she was better."
Nick laughed at the homework comment, "so how is Dana and Jamie?"
Nick's face became a serious one again, "She's had to get and emergency caesarean, due to complications and Jamie doesn't know what to do with himself."
"I'm so sorry Nick, I'm sure everything will be ok she was nearly full term right?"
"Yeah she was due in about 4 weeks."
"I'm sure everything will be ok. So how are you doing Nick?"
"It's not me in surgery, or whose wife is in surgery. I'm fine."
"Don't lie to yourself, I know we have only known each other for a few weeks but I know that you are struggling with this; it may not be your wife or baby but he is still your brother and you are family and it makes sense to be upset or worried."
Nick looked down at his hands emotions running on a high, he didn't really know what he was feeling. It was all happening so fast; he told his brother it was all gunna be ok but how was he really supposed to know what was happening?
"I don't know what to think, I feel I have to be strong for Jamie and Matt but I don't know any more than they do, what if it isn't all ok? What if there is a lot of complications than they first thought? What am I supposed to say to make it better? And of course I can't make it better I'm just Nick the law school drop out that at nearly 40 and is only just starting to get their life together, while my younger brother is married with one amazing son and a wife whose in surgery and could possibly lose their second child." Nick was on the verge of tears, he had always struggled about thinking he wasn't good enough but now with Dana, life has kind of hit him face on with a reality check that how come his brother who is 3 years younger than him is twice of a man he is.
"Nick, look at me." Nick looked up, his sad brown eyes connecting with sympathetic blue ones. "Listen to me you are an amazing person. From what I have seen in these last weeks you are a better man than I have ever met. You may not have a medical degree, or a law one but you have a heart, full of love for your family. So what that you aren't married yet a lot of people aren't you're looking at one now, but that doesn't make you any less of a man because of it. It is ok to feel that there is nothing you can do but there is you can keep being you, supporting your family when they need it; be there when Dana comes out of surgery whatever the result. If good great but if something does happen it is not your fault or responsibility to fix it. You be you and everything will turn out ok."
2 hours later…
Jamie was sitting on the chair next to his wife's bed waiting for her to wake up. The doctors said the C-section went ok technically, but Dana will have to stay in the hospital for a few extra days to fully recover. Their baby, a beautiful girl with dark brown eyes, so small a fragile that you think just looking at her she would break. Due to the complications and her being premature she has to stay in for observation for a few days two to make sure they know everything is ok. Jamie was just glad that his little family was unharmed.
"Jamie?" he heard a soft voice, dry from not talking in a while, he looked over to see his beautiful wife smiling right back at him.
"Dana, I'm so glad your awake you had me worried then." Jamie got up to give his wife a hug, emotions still on a roller coaster, but at this moment he couldn't be happier. His wife awake and well and his baby girl should be well enough to come home with them soon. Life was looking up for the Millers.
"Jamie, where's our baby?"
"She's in the nursery for premature babies, being closely watched. Their monitoring everything and she should be well enough to come home in a few days and so will you."
Dana showed a tired smile, "Thank goodness."
"When can I see her?"
"I'm not sure they said they had to do a few more tests before they put her in the nursery, I will go and ask a nurse."
Just then Nick came into the room with Matt and Jess. "MOM!" As soon as Matt saw his mom awake he rushed over to her bed to give her a hug, luckily not to strong of a hug. "Hey Matt"
While Matt stayed on the edge of his mom's bed Nick and Jess walked closer, "It's good to see you awake Dana you had us worried for a while."
"I'm good Nick, and isn't this Matt's teacher Miss Day it's nice to see you."
"Yeah, Nick and I were going out tonight but I thought this was more important so we came here I hope that's ok I can leave if you just want to be with your family."
"No don't worry, this explains the goofy grin Nick had last night when he dropped Matt off. But I'm sorry for ruining your plans for tonight."
"No need to apologise, I'm just glad your well."
"Since everybody's here I'm going to check on my daughter and see if we can see her." Dana nodded at her husband with a smile, happy she could see her baby girl.
"Hello Doctor, I was wondering how my baby girl was doing and when Dana would be able to see her, since she can't leave her room."
"Well I was just coming to say that all the tests on her came back negative and we are positive that she will be fine but were still wanting to keep her in for observation. But I was just coming to tell you that we can bring her into your wife's room for a while but she will have to go back to the nursery."
"I completely understand that."
"Ok then shall we go get your baby."
"I would like you to meet mini Miller mark 2" Jamie exclaimed while entering Dana's room with a doctor pushing a cot. Dana started sniffing with emotions, "Can I hold her?"
"Of course." The doctor reached into the cot and passed their baby over to Dana. "Oh my, she is so small, she has your eyes," she said looking back to Jamie who was leaning over the right side of her bed, where Matt was on the left. Nick cleared his throat, "We'll just give you guys a minute." Nick, Jess and the doctor then left the room quietly. The three of them just looked down at their new family member like she was a queen. "I think I'm gunna like having a sister." Matt said "I'm gunna be her big tough older brother, yeah I'm gunna be the coolest."
Jamie and Dana quietly chuckled at their son, "You sure will son."
"What are we going to name her?" Discussing names they had gone over a thousand times they finally agreed on one. Jamie and Dana quickly looked at each other having a silent conversation with their eyes, a skill they perfected since having Matt. "Matt can you get your uncle and Jess back we want to tell them her name."
"Sure thing dad." Matt promptly jumped of the bed and left the room in search of Nick and Jess. "So what are we gunna do? You guys have to stay in hospital and I'm not leaving you but Matt clearly can't stay here, do you think Nick would look after him for a few days?"
"'I'm sure he wouldn't mind he loves spending time with Matt."
"Ok I'll ask him when he gets back in."
"Mom, Dad I got them." Matt said while re-entering the room taking his place back on the edge of the bed.
"So guys I would like to introduce you to Lily Madalyn Miller." Dana said proudly.
"Ahh guys that's so cute." Nick said with a smile, both Jess and him made their way to the bed to get a better look at Lily. "Nick can I talk to you for a sec?"
"Sure thing."
Nick and Jamie stepped into the corridor, "I was wondering if you could look after Matt at your place for a few days? You can go to ours to get some of his things but I really don't want to leave Dana and Lily so is that ok?"
"Jamie it's not a problem, it's what I'm here for and I love hanging with Matt."
"You are a life saviour."
They made their way back into the room, Jess was over by Dana with Matt cooing over the baby. Before they realised it was 10:30pm. They had told Matt about staying with Nick which he was fine with. Lily had to go back to the nursery and Nick, Jess and Matt were starting to leave. "Ok so call if you need anything and we will come back and visit after school tomorrow won't we bud?" Nick said to Matt, "Yup, feel better mom." Matt and Nick gave Dana and Jamie a hug and they left the parents to rest. They got to the car, and decided to stop at Matt's to grab some clothes and what not first. "Do you want me to drop you off before or after Matt's Jess or you can come back with us for some late dinner?"
"Late dinner sounds great I'm starving."
That's it for now, hope you enjoyed it. Shout out to End80 who came up with the middle name :)
