Chapter 12: Nephew's wise words

Nick was in his office crunching numbers, so he let his mind wonder. That evening Jess and he were having a lovely time but he turns his back for five minutes and her whole persona changed. Fear flooded his thoughts. Everything was going great, Nick had never been one to think about the future with previous relationships but for the first time in his life he could actually see a one. White picket fences, teaching their son how to ride a bike while Jess sat on the porch with their new baby girl. These may have been girly thoughts but when with Jess he couldn't help but let his mind wonder. But now all he could see was heart break, all he wishes is that those lovely thoughts would come back but nothing. He was brought out of his tunnel of depressing feelings with a knock on the door, "Bob, I'm busy."

The door creaked open, but Bob wasn't the culprit but a big wave of blond hair came flowing in. Nick looked up to see what the problem was to be face to face with "Caroline?"

"Hey Nick…" She drew out his name in a flirtatious manor.

"What do you want?" Caroline slowly walked up to his desk and perched on the edge, "I just wanted to stop by and see a friend I don't see a problem with that?" Nick moved back in his chair a little feeling uncomfortable with the current situation. "Um… No but we haven't seen each other for years."

"So maybe it's time to change that." With that said she moved from the front of the desk round to where Nick was sat. "I don't know about you but I've been feeling lonely without you by my side, and ever since we broke up there has been something missing and I just thought we have both grown up a little maybe it's time to give us a real shot." Caroline said in the sweetest voice she could muster. She may not have meant everything she said but her clock was ticking she needed to fall back on her back up plan. "A real shot? We were together 4 years how's that not a real shot? You knew I loved you and you're the one that left so what is this really all about because I really don't believe all that rubbish about missing something not being with me?"

"Look Nick, here's the truth I don't think I really knew how you felt back then and panicked that there was no future and now I realised that you did love me and that I was the one not appreciating you not the other way around." Even Caroline was believing what was coming out of her mouth, she did feel a little guilty knowing that he was with someone else and she was manipulating him but other than that she didn't really care because she just needed what she needed.

"Caroline, I don't know what you want me to say here. I've moved on, there was a time that I really did love you but after you broke up with me it took me years to find a place in my life that I actually liked. I am proud of who I am and what I do now. And I have found someone that appreciates me for who I am. I'm sorry that I can't reciprocate feelings that you are having, I want you to be happy but I'm afraid that can't be me."

Caroline was stunned Nick had never stood up to her before, he normally was a crumbling mess around her, she didn't realise that he could actually grow a pair. "Nick this isn't over." With that she stormed out of the office. Once she had left the office she was extremely angry, what kind of backup plan was someone who wouldn't come running when they called. She leaned on the wall for a few minutes trying to come up with another plan that would get her what she wanted.

It had been about a week since the whole Caroline incident, Jess had been obviously avoiding Nick, coming up with random excuses why to cancel dates. But now it was getting ridiculous she was really missing him. So what if that women said he was commitment phobic? He could have changed? She may have not been the one? Questions flooded her head of doubt, confusion and love. All Jess wanted to believe was that she was the one and that he wanted to spend his life with her and start a family, but there was still that nagging thought in the back of her head. What was she going to do?

"Miss Day?" Jess looked up to see Matt standing in front of her, it was school time so he stuck to formality and called her Miss Day.

"Are you ok Matt?"

"I was going to ask you the same question." Jess looked at him confused, so he decided to explain. "My Uncle has been acting really weird all week and I figured it was to do with you since I haven't seen you at his lately. So that's why I was wondering if you were ok."

"Yeah I'm ok, and I still love your uncle, it's complicated, don't want to worry you."

"Jess, I have never seen my uncle so happy since he has been with you, and I know I am only 7 but I can see it. I just want my uncle to be happy and I really think you're the one that can do that. You are the best teacher I have ever had and I can see a change in you this week as well, so please tell me."

"Ok, well last week I was at the bar and this women came up to me who knew Nick and was saying all this stuff and it just got me scared and I have been trying to get my head around it but I can't so that's why I have been kind of avoiding Nick this last week."

"Well what did she say?"

"I don't know if I feel comfortable talking to a 7 year old about this?" Matt gave Jess a look saying I want to help, this is important. "Fine. Ok it had to do with your uncle's previous relationship, she used to date him and so she was saying he never wanted to commit and other stuff like that. It just freaked me out because I really love your uncle and I thought we were going to go the distance. Ok you can say I sound stupid now or just leave because this has kind of gotten awkward."

"I say don't listen to her, my dad said that he has never seen Nick as happy with anyone then he has seen with you. He really likes you. Since I remember Nick has never really been with a long term girlfriend so I don't remember her but what I do know is you need to talk to Nick because my dad, mum, Schmidt, Winston, Coach and I can see a change in him and that is you. If anyone makes him commit is you. He loves you a lot."

Jess just sat there for what felt like an hour shocked at what Matt just said, someone so perceptive for someone so young. He was right Jess knew he had to talk to Nick about her insecurities. If Jess wanted this relationship to go the distance she couldn't run at the first problem. "Your right Matt, I need to talk to him. Is he at work?"

"Actually you're in luck, he's picking me up in 5 minutes." Jess looked at him, she had a feeling that he had set this up and it wasn't a coincidence.

5 minutes passed and Jess and Matt made their way out to the front of the school to find Nick's car pulling up. Matt walked up to the car leaving Jess at the front of the school like they had planned. Matt threw his backpack in the car looked at Nick and said "hey, there is someone that wants to talk to you." Nick looked at Matt confused,

"Who?" Matt moved out of the way of the window do Nick saw Jess standing outside the school.

"Go." Matt got into the car while Nick got out making his way over to Jess.

"Hey."

"Hey." They looked at each other for a while both too scared to talk first. Jess was the one to break the silence. "Look I'm sorry for this week, I've just been thinking too much and got scared and insecure and I didn't know what to do so I ran away and I'm sorry ok, I love you and I will stop being in my head and live in the moment because there is no one I would rather be with than you." Jess looked down at her feet worried about how he was going to react. "Jess, look at me." Nick put a finger under her chin and lifted her face to look at him.

"You don't have to apologise, I was never mad at you, I was just worried I had done something to make you upset. Jess you are the best thing that has ever happened to me in my whole life, and now that I have you in it there is nothing that is going to make me get rid of you from it. I love you so much and I only want to be with you."

Jess was close to tears now, all the emotion she had been going through all week rushing to the surface. Nick saw a tear run down her face and immediately wiped it away. He lent down to kiss her, arms wrapping around her waist, hers finding a home around his neck. After a few minutes Nick realised his Nephew was in the car and broke it apart. "How about I drop Matt off at home and then we could go to our diner and have proper chat." Jess nodded grabbing his hand making their way over to the car, she caught Matt's eye where he winked at her and she gave a big goofy smile back in a way of thanks. Then they set off.
