2 Days Later
I had woken up in my bed with dry and clean clothes on. Ever since Pine and Mom have been slipping in out since I've been going between sleeping and eating. Normally I refuse to eat.
Mom said that ever since the announcement Johanna has been trying to get ahold of me.
But she holds comes into my room and tells me that Finnick called asking for me saying that Mags had a seizure I wait until she leaves to grab the phone. I know their number by heart and when it starts ringing I try to stroke my bedcovers to calm me but my heart is beating so quickly I'm trying to let it burst out of my chest.
A tired voice answers. "Hello?"
"This is Fern," I say quickly not recognizing the voice.
"Hang on," they say. I think it's Caspian.
"Finnick! Finnick, Fern is on the phone," he says. I hear some chatter before there's a crackle and Finnick comes on the phone.
"Hey."
"How are you?" I ask quietly.
"Fine, not Mags though. Annie's had a relapse too but she's asleep now. Are you alright? Johanna and Blight called and said they found you in the woods."
I swallow. "Yeah. I guess. How's Mags?"
He sighs. "The doctor says he'll be fine but everything is kind of messed up here."
"What do you mean?" I ask.
"Me and all the other guys agreed to volunteer for Harpoon if he gets picked but Laguna and Brooke refused to volunteer for Annie or Mags," he says.
"What?" I shout. "Those...those... How could they?"
Finnick curses a few times as I hear one of the other Victors calling him. "I gotta' go. Call me when you feel better okay?" he asks before I say goodbye an hang up.
I try to call Seeder but phone lines are down in Eleven.
I bite my lip. The other Victors are out there trying to help each other and what am I doing? Laying in bed. For some reason the thought makes me angry so I throw off the warm covers and change into some yoga pants and a tank top before pulling my hair up in a pony-tail and jerking a coat on.
Mother looks startled when I get downstairs. "Darling, where you are going?"
"To see Johanna," I say quickly. "Being in the house all day is not going to stop the Quarter from happening."
Just saying the Quarter Quell makes me queasy. I wave good-bye before ducking out into the cold and striding over to Johanna's.
It takes moment for anyone to answer the door but Blight eventually does. He ushers me in and hangs up my coat and starts leading me down to the basement.
"Blight, what are you doing?" I ask as he tugs my wrist.
"Training," he says.
I can hear the banging and the yells from the basement before I even get o the bottom. When I do I gape at everything. They have somehow assembled a mock training center composed of just weapons.
"What in the world?" I say, whipping my head around watching everyone.
Johanna sets down a sword and strides over.
"If we're going back into the Arena, we're going prepared," she says.
"Johanna how did you do this?" I ask bewildered.
She nods at Blight. "He has some fans in the Capitol. Let me show you around."
She proceeds to show me the mats for wrestling and the axes, swords, bow, and knives that they have collected. Besides that there's also weights and some climbing bars in the corner.
I glance over where Axel is handling a sword. For just a moment, his eye flick up to me only to disappear as he turns around giving me a view of his dark hair instead.
"Feel free to try anything you want," Johanna says before focusing on knife throwing.
"Try sparring Alona- none can beat her yet," Blight says pointing at the mat.
Alona looks up with a slight smile. "Want to?"
I shrug. "Sure."
We go over to mat where she lets me have the first move.
I swing my fist but she ducks, though I catch her in the stomach with my foot. I think she's still doubling over, but instead she reaches up and with one hand squeezes my wrist. I cry out before kneeing her side.
She cracks another smiles before swinging to left, jerking my before I feel her fingers on my shoulder.
Numbness flood my arm and she kicks me in the back of the knee in some vein that immediately makes my knee give out before she lets me go and I topple to the mat.
"Where did you... learn that?" I say between gasps.
She gives a small laugh, helping me up.
"How do you think she won?" Nyla asks with a hint of humor in her voice.
Balsam son takes me over to try swords but the thing is so heavy I remember why I avoided it during Training before my Games.
By the time it's almost four we're all tired and head up the stairs. Johanna tells us to come back tomorrow for more training. We get the weekends off.
I get on my coat and walk out onto the porch before a familiar person walks out.
"Oh! Axel!" I blurt. For a moment I'm frozen as he turns around, running a hand through his black curls that barely touch the tops of his ears.
I walk down the steps out to him. "Axel-"
"Fern I'm sorry if I-" he begins but instead I put my hands on his shoulders and kiss him.
My stomach flutters again and the warm feeling spreads down my body again even in the winter air. I feel his freezing hands on my back and I almost laugh.
I reluctantly step away, a smile dancing across my lips.
He gives me wry one in return. "I knew you liked me."
I give a laugh. "Oh, really? How?"
"I just knew. You look at my eyes like their mirrors," He says with a grin.
I just laugh again and he beams.
And I love it.

4/8/15: I changed the ending because I'd copied a bit of the ending from a movie called Minor Details by a company (I think their a company. They have a Youtube channel,) called MainstayPro. So, yep, I changed the ending to that... the one you just read if you just read read this chapter. I like it!
