A skating rink. Cute date, right? 70's themed skating, couple's night, even half-off the slushies! Diana sighed. What had she been thinking, agreeing to go with Bruce to this event? She knew that she wasn't very good at skating, which was sad, considering all of the combat training she had done on Themyscira. She should have excellent balance, and she did, just not on little wheels.
The Amazon glanced over at her date. Bruce Wayne, with his height and bulk, did not look like the kind of person you'd see dressed in bell-bottoms and an orange button-up shirt. He finished buckling his skates, stood up, and offered his hand to help her up. Diana smiled and accepted, allowing herself to be pulled to her feet. Immediately, she could feel her feet shift underneath her, and her smile faltered.
Taking a deep breath, she inched forward, half rolling, half walking. The couple slid onto the rink, into the flow of people dressed in vests and waist high pants. A few moments later, as Diana tried to match everyone else's speed, her feet slid out from under her, and she thudded to the ground. Bruce skidded to a halt, and turned to look at her.
"Sorry, sorry," Diana grumbled, feeling her face heat up, though whether with anger, or embarrassment, she didn't know.
"It's okay, I'm a little rusty, myself," Bruce assured her, offering his hand again. This time, however, she ignored it, and clamored to her feet on her own. They set off once again, and Diana watched as Bruce turned, skated backwards for a bit, then spun several times, facing forward again.
"Rusty, my foot," Diana growled to herself. Not willing to be outdone, she attempted a spin of her own, but ended up on her rear again. She decided that the heat in her face was because of anger. Bruce was looking a little embarrassed. Diana cursed at herself in her head, as she clutched the bar at the edge of the rink, and pulled herself up.
Her date rolled up to her and opened his mouth to speak, but Diana held up a hand. "Yes, I know I'm usually more graceful, and yes, I know that members of the Justice League do not fall on their rears."
Bruce chuckled. "Actually, I was going to suggest that I help guide you."
Diana considered the offer, then said, "Alright."
Bruce led her away from the rail, had her face forward, and then slid behind her, placing his hands on her waist. "Okay," he spoke into her ear. "Start by pushing your feet out, one at a time. Skating is about momentum…" He continued to give her instructions, all the while guiding her movements with his hands. Soon, they were skating in tandem, and Diana was smiling again, very aware of how close Bruce was to her.
"You're doing great!" Bruce encouraged her.
"Thank you, and thank you for teaching me."
"Well, I had to make sure the JL saved face, didn't I?"
Diana laughed, and turned to give him a playful punch, causing them both to lose their balance in the process. They toppled to the floor, but this time, neither of them minded. They laughed, then scrambled up, and Diana thought that perhaps this was a good idea after all.
