Chapter 8

Danny sighed, taking a bite of his cafeteria mush. The past few weeks have been rough- like, really rough. Being apart from Sam took its toll on him, and it showed; he looked like a truck ran over him all the time, sleep was no longer in his schedule, and he was just plain miserable all the time. Of course, he was in no way dependant on Sam. He wasn't going to break. No, he was just a teenage boy going through a tough time, like all hormone driven teenagers.

But the worst thing about it all was that shedidn't seem fazed at all. Sam continued with her life, just being her normal self.

As if they never happened.

She sat with him and Tucker for lunch, chattering about how idiotic popular things were, about the great books she found in the Skulk and Lurk, crushing his soul with every perfect word she spoke.

"The new Terminitra movie's coming out this Saturday, let's go."

As if they never happened.

"The Nasty Burger's introducing more meat into the menu. No, thank you."

As if they never happened. As if they never happened. As if they never happened. As if they never happened.

The words echoed in his mind, hurting him more and more each time they repeated in his head. Was she trying to torture him? How was she so ok when he was on the brink of breaking?

He slammed down his spoon and stood up.

"Danny? What's wrong?" Sam asked with concern.

He scowled, muttering a low 'nothing', as he left two stunned teens in his wake.

He walked around the dumpsters behind the school. There were hardly ever any people there, so it was a good place to think. He leaned against the fence and stared up at the sky. He thought about Sam.

The Goth was always such a passionate girl, so why didn't she show her feelings when he needed her to? It confused, angered and frustrated him. What was he supposed to do? How was he supposed to act? Was he supposed to be his usual self? Was he being a baby by brooding so much over a girl?

And one question ran through his mind constantly: Did she ever really love him?

He knew it was totally unfair of him to start doubting her now, but how could he not? If she did, she certainly wouldn't be acting so indifferent to their break up, would she?

"Danny?" a familiar voice called, pulling him out of his brooding.

He turned to the direction of the voice. "Hey, Allyson," he greeted unenthusiastically. He couldn't help but blame her for the ending of him and Sam. He knew she wasn't to blame, but he needed someone other than himself to be angry at.

She walked over to him, looking down to the ground with an apologetic look in her eyes. "I'm sorry," she finally said, settling next to him on the fence. She leaned on the rusty metal, looking away with guilt. "I know I'm the one responsible for causing problems between you and Sammy."

Danny looked over to her. Damn, how could he hate her when she was such a kind girl? "It's not your fault," he sighed. "If it's anyone's fault, it's mine. I shouldn't have acted the way I did." He shrugged despondently.

"I don't know if I should say this," she paused, biting her bottom lip, "but I don't know, Sammy just seems a little bothered. Did something big happen between you two?" she asked innocently.

"We broke up."

Her eyes widened in shock as they moistened slightly. "I'm so sorry!" she exclaimed, covering her mouth with her hand. "Sammy's like that every time I visit. She'll definitely be back to normal once I'm gone." She turned away from him, sniffing. She turned her head to the side, sneaking him a hopeful look. "Unless you don't want me to go…"

He raised a brow in confusion. Why would his opinion matter? "Don't you want to go back?"

Her shoulders slumped. "Of course I don't," she said, frowning. "I was sent there because I was a bit of a wild child. I miss my family, I barely ever see them." She turned to him again and put a hand on his, smiling when he didn't protest. "But if you want me to, I'll ask my parents to not send me back," she said, putting on a bright, expectant smile.

(A/N): I'm so sorry it took so long to update. Oh gosh, school is a little hectic and other parts of my life are becoming busier. I hope you enjoyed this chapter. It's really short and I'm sorry guys but I'll work on getting a heavier, longer chapter next time.
