"What do you mean something is wrong with Izaya?" Shinra asked, now more engaged in the conversation.
"He doesn't remember anything," Shizuo explained, trying to remain calm.
"Please explain what "anything" is," Shinra replied.
"I asked him where we were, he has no idea, "Shizuo started, "He didn't know what a television remote was, he doesn't know his job…"
It sounded like Shinra was taking notes, "Is there anything he does remember?"
Shizuo froze, "Uh…yeah."
"What does he remember?" Shinra asked.
"He remembers who I am, my job and what I am to him," Shizuo bluntly explained.
There was silence on the other line, Shinra started writing, but stopped.
"He remembers only you, huh?" Shinra asked.
"Basically," Shizuo sighed.
"This is probably a form of shock, "Shinra calmly explained.
"Can shock be this bad?"
"Well, there are certain degrees to shock," Shinra paused, "That's not the point, Shizuo. Izaya only remembers you because you were the one that was with him during the incident, so basically he is trying to forget everything bad."
"But what about the television remote?" Shizuo asked, "Surely something bad didn't happen with a television during or after the incident."
"Hmm," Shinra paused, thinking.
Shizuo suddenly heard something shatter; he jumped up, "One second Shinra!"
Shizuo rushed into his house, not waiting for Shinra to reply or ending the call. Shizuo opened the door to find Izaya staring down at the shattered glass from a plate, his eyes wide with terror, Shizuo pocketed his phone, the speaker out for Shinra to hear and moved quickly to Izaya who was staring to shake and breathe loudly.
"It's okay, Izaya," Shizuo whispered, standing closer to him.
Izaya turned to Shizuo, eyes full of terror, "Why…am I so scared of it?"
"Because-"
"Why did I-?" Izaya started, his voice going into almost a scream.
Shizuo caught Izaya in a hug, Izaya started shaking violently and crying, terrified from just seeing the shattered plate, "It's okay, it's alright."
Izaya tried to move away, but Shizuo held him still, "Let me go… I need to go…" Izaya started to fight with Shizuo to let him go, "I need to run… I need to get out of here…!" Izaya tried to yank his hands free and bolt for the door, as if the earthquake was happening again, "PLEASE LET ME GO…!"
"IZAYA!" Shizuo yelled, in a firm voice.
Izaya froze, as if he snapped back to reality. A dazed and blank look on his face, "Shizuo…" he trailed, Why am I…Why is…?"
"Shh, just calm down, nothing happened," Shizuo breathed, giving Izaya a gentle hug, "Izaya, can you please go sit over there for a moment?" Shizuo asked, pointing to the office chair.
Izaya blankly nodded and walked over and sat down in the chair, he gave a small spin in the chair.
"I'll be right outside the door, okay?" Shizuo gently stated.
Izaya stopped spinning and gave a nod and continued to spin.
Shizuo walked out the door and closed it gently, he grabbed his phone from his pocket.
"Well?" Shizuo asked Shinra, who had been listening.
"It seems like an extreme case of shock, " Shinra concluded.
"Thank you, Captain Obvious, " Shizuo snapped.
"Keep trying some things and see if you can get him to remember anything or point out any habits that he has that he may not notice," Shinra suggested.
"Like if he's spinning in his office chair?" Shizuo pointed out.
"Yes, because that was a habit of his, its natural and he wouldn't know until you pointed it out to him," Shinra explained, "Just try and find something that will trigger the memories completely."
"But with the broken plate all he remembered was the bad memories," Shizuo explained, "So how do I balance it out so at the same time he remembers the good stuff?"
"That is for you to discover," Shinra sighed, "I'll check back soon, maybe I can make a memory test for him if I have a free moment."
"Okay, I'll try my best," Shizuo sighed deeply, "And yeah, a memory test might be a good place to start."
Shizuo ended the call and opened the door, to find Izaya still spinning in his office chair.
"Shizuo," Izaya smiled, stopping.
Shizuo smiled softly, the sadness seemed to be slowly engulfing him.
"Shizuo, why do I feel empty?" Izaya asked.
Shizuo was taken aback from the question, and thought maybe it had something to do with his memories, but stared at the clock and realized it was probably because it was close to lunch time.
"You're hungry," Shizuo replied, walking over and grabbing a broom and dust pan to sweep up the broken plate.
"Is that why I grabbed that?" Izaya questioned, pointing to the broken plate.
Shizuo froze, connecting the dots; Did Izaya subconsciously realize he was hungry and grab a plate so he could get food? Or is it just a coincidence?
