The scales on the dragons tail feel rough and caked with grime. I quickly lift my hand and slowly make my way to the dragons side where the blood is slowing and the pool is growing larger by the second. The sight of the blood shocks a memory through me. I keep well back from the pool and begin to walk backwards as it creeps toward me. I have no shoes and therefore no protection. Should the dragons blood touch my skin it will cause my skin to burn as if on fire, I would rather it not be my feet. I need those to stand and move, and if I'm going to get out of here then I will need for my feet to be unharmed.
~Get out? There is an idea. . .~
My foot collides with something and I look behind me to see the dragon has moved its tail to block my movement, the end curling up along my back and holding me still. Its blood begins to pool around my feet and I wait for the searing burn that I think is going to ravish my feet, but it never comes. There is a light tingle but nothing of the burning that was always described in the books I read on dragon physiology. I lift one foot out of the dark liquid and note the tingling stays. Placing one foot in front of the other very firmly, I make my way to the dragons side.
Blood has almost stopped flowing from the gashes and the dragons growling has subsided to a low rumble. I can see inside of one of the gashes, although only vaguely, and what appears to be another wing is underneath the smooth lump. The dragons tail suddenly pushed me closer to the dragons head.
~So now it wants to eat me. . . .~
I reached out with my good arm and grasped at the dragons leg to halt my movement. Sadly, with my luck, My hand slipped and I began to thrash about, reaching out for any kind of hand hold. The only place it found purchase was one of the holes in the dragons side.
A high pitched screech resonated through my head and off of the walls. My hand automatically let go as pain erupted in my own back, a burning and tearing sensation ripping its way along the right side of my back. The dragon must have hit me with its tail.
I fell to the ground with a splash. The blood had pooled quite deep and now I was covered in it, my body tingling. I felt the dragon shake beside me. Did it honestly hurt that much? The poor thing. . . . Poor thing. . . . Poor-what? How is this a 'poor thing'? I have been tossed about, carried roughly and laid on! There is no way this dragon is a poor anything!
I coil myself up and launch myself at the dragons side, tearing off a section of flesh. The tingling sensation was working its way through my whole body. I went to throw the scrap of skin at the dragons head and instead end up throwing dust and pieces of clotted blood. I look to the dragons side and see that more of the skin is dissolving, slowly. The dragon is still humming in pain. I wipe blood from my face and reach for the dragons side again. It leans away and whines at me.
This massive creature, capable of tearing me to pieces any moment, is afraid of my touch. Maybe, just maybe, the books were wrong?
The blood running over my body from the dragon seemed to be more that dripping and tingling now. I could feel my skin coming alive with a new feeling. I could feel the pain more sharply in my back, it was radiating and pulsing and it hurt. I reached my hand behind me and began to delicately rub where I thought I had been hit. I could feel the pain spike and then wear away when I massaged around the pain.
The dragons groan pulled me out of my actions. It had laid its head down and had closed its eyes. Was it about to die? Its injured side was now close enough for me to reach. More of the smooth skin had faded away, a lot more. How long was I rubbing my back? I could see the bottom half of what I knew to be a full wing. Hundreds of light shiny marks covered the veiny membrane of its wing.
The dragon huffed loudly and the light of the glowing coals grew stronger.
I took in a sharp breath at the new vision the light had brought me. The light skittered and played over the shiny scared scales of the dragon.
~By the gods, what a wondrous shade of blue. . . . .~
