Chapter 18 – Father

"Robert..." says Lola, trying to close the door again.

The man called Robert puts his foot in the way, stopping Lola from closing the door. He forces the door to open again and Lola finally gives up, because she was afraid of making that man mad. Robert then enters the house.

"What are you doing here, Robert? How did you get out from prison?" the woman asks, her body trembling when the man puts his hand on her hair.

"I came to take you back, Lola," he says, smelling Lola's hair, making her get away quickly.

"W-What do you mean, take me back?"

"When I was at prison, I realized that I made a great mistake leaving you behind like that. I thought Rin was the only good thing I ever had in my life, but I was wrong. I love you, Lola. Come back to me!"

Rin was frozen at the living room's entrance, watching her mother talk to that man. Everything that was going through her mind were the painful memories and screams of her broken mind begging her mother to call the police soon.

"Mama, why hasn't dad come home yet?" the little six years old Rin asked her mother, who was looking worried at the window.

"I don't know, honey. Maybe something happened at his job. But I am sure that your father is fine." The woman looked lovingly at her daughter, while caressing her cheek.

Truth to be said, Lola wasn't so calm as she made it look to her child. Lately her husband, Robert, has been getting home somewhat irritated and he never talked to her when she asked the reason for it. She was worried, really worried.

The front door opened suddenly and the little Rin smiled when she saw her father entering, she ran to hug him, but stopped when she noticed something was wrong. Since it was raining outside, her father's clothes were soaked, but what scared her was that they were dirty and her father's appearance didn't seem appealing to the eye right then.

"Is dinner ready, woman?"

When Lola heard her husband's voice, she noticed something was wrong. He was drunk. Lola took Rin's hand and whispered to the girl to go to her room. Rin ran to the stairs, but she didn't went upstairs, she hid in the dark to watch, curious of what was happening.

"R-Robert, what just happened to you?"

"Can't you say by just looking at me, you idiot woman?"

"You are drunk… But… Why?"

"I lost my job, you dumb woman! For fifteen days I've tried to get a new job, but I just can't find it!"

"Oh, Robert... Why didn't you tell me this before? Don't worry, honey. You will get a new job in no time and I also will look for one to me! Everything is going to be alright!" Lola said trying to take her husband to the kitchen.

"All right? Of course nothing is going to be alright! It your fault woman, you keep spending the monay that should be used to make my daughter's life better! You force me to work with something I hate!"

Lola tried to stay calm. Her husband was drunk, she knew that he didn't really want to hurt her with his words like that, that what he was saying wasn't what he really think of her. Lola stepped back and looked at him in the eyes.

"You need to calm down, Robert. Rin will hear you screaming like that."

"Don't tell me what to do!" after the yell, Rin heard the sound of a slap and stood up from the step startled when she saw her mother's body falling to the ground, a bead of blood coming from her lips.

And that was how everything began.

X-X-X

Now with eight years of age, Rin was entering her house; her neighbor had taken her at school and brought her home while her mother was working. Lola had to get a job, since Robert's situation was getting worse.

When Rin arrived at the kitchen to prepare her lunch, she found an unusual scene. Her father was at the table, a bottle of vodka was his companion and the television was turned on at a soccer channel. The blonde ignored that scene and her father didn't seem to notice her presence. Rin lit the stove and put a pan with oil to heat up. She opened the refrigerator and decided to prepare bacon with eggs. Rin was already used to have such a simple lunch every day, since her mother wasn't at home to make something better for her.

"Sweetie, what are you doing?" Rin got startle when she heard the voice.

"I-I'm preparing my lunch, dad…"

"What? I can't let my little baby do such a dangerous thing!" Rin listened to her father standing from his chair, he took the eggs and bacon from her little hands and decided to prepare something more elaborated. "What is that woman thinking? Leaving my little daughter alone like this!"

When Rin heard his commentary about her mother, she couldn't control herself but get angry at him. And this angry soon turned into curiosity. Robert put the plate at the table and Rin sat and started to eat, she had to admit it, but even drunk, he was a good cook. Of course, it was his job before, well, everything went downhill. Seeing that her father was smiling while he watched her feed herself, the mind of the little Rin decided that that was the best time to talk with this man.

"Why... Why are you so bad to mommy, dad?"

Rin noticed that when she asked that question, her father's countenance turned into a frown. She got scared, feeling like she did something really wrong.

"Who told you that? Your mother?"

"N-No, I… I…"

As if she had been summoned, Lola opened the front door and went to the kitchen, her smile died when she noticed Rin's expression.

"What just happened her...?" she had to time to finish, because she was hit by a punch.

"How there you talk bad of me to my daughter like this?" the man was yelling, pulling his wife's hair.

Lola just stared at him startled; she resented her husband, but never talked bad of him to Rin. She was afraid that it would happen something like what was just happening right now. Her eyes went to Rin, who now was crying and looked at her as if saying I'm sorry.

It was her fault, everything was her fault.

X-X-X

Lola was worried. Rin, now ten years old, was having a violent behavior at school and sometimes she would get involved in fights. Lola believed that the blame for such behavior was the situation she was living at home. Everything Lola wanted was that Rin wasn't following her father's footsteps.

It has been four years. Four years since that day when Robert decided to reveal that he had lost his job. Four years that Lola was enduring domestic violence in silence. And why? She didn't even know anymore. She already had stopped to Love Robert for at least two years.

That exactly moment, she was preparing lunch for him, who was sitting on the couch at the living room watching something she didn't care in the TV. Lola heard the sound of the door opening and smiled, going to the room to welcome her daughter.

For years Rin didn't found her father at home when she arrived from school, so, when she opened the door and saw him sitting on the couch she got surprise, but also, she felt disgust. Her father had never hurt her, but what he made to her mother was enough to make her hate him.

"What is this idiot old man doing here?" she asked with disdain.

"R-Rin!" her mother's look begged her to stop.

"It this the proper way to talk to you father, girl?" the man asked with irritation, but, for some reason, it wasn't focused on Rin.

"Go fuck yourself, you old drunken!"

When Robert stood from the couch, Rin finally realized the mistake she had made. It wasn't on her he would relieve his frustration, but on her mother. Always on her mother. Why? Why did she need to be such an idiot?

"You are the one teaching these things to her, isn't it?" the man yelled and grabbed the woman by her hair.

"N-No, Robert! Stop, please!"

Rin felt the need to cry, but decided that she was stronger than that. She ran and pulled her father's arm that was about to hit her mother. Without noticing, the man hit Rin instead, who fell on the ground, knocking against the center table of the living room. Robert stopped immediately his attack against Lola and looked terrified at his daughter.

"Rin, baby, I'm sorry... I didn't want to..."

The man tried to approach his daughter, but she only flinched away from him. It was Lola's fault, that idiot woman; it was her fault for making him get angry in front of his child! Rin was the only good thing he had in his life; he couldn't lose her like this! Robert looked behind and noticed Lola wasn't there anymore.

The woman of black hair came back seconds later, the telephone in her hand, a determinate expression on her face.

"You can do anything you want with me, Robert, but don't you ever touch my daughter like this! I just called the police; I won't accept your violence in this house anymore!"

X-X-X

Drowning in the memory of the last time she saw her father, Rin almost couldn't hear what the two adults were saying in front of her. There's only one thing that was going through her mind that time.

"Why aren't you in prison?" her voice came out louder that the necessary, due to the nervousness. That alerted Len, who stopped eating and stood up to see what was happening.

"I'm in conditional release, sweetie." he smiled to his daughter, "They let me out for good behavior."

That moment, Len entered the room and Robert's eyes narrowed to him. Before the man could say anything about it, Lola asked him first, "How did you find us?" she asked seriously.

"I would recognize my little Rin anywhere. One night some time ago, I saw Rin being dragged to an alley by some boys, I was ready to break their faces for hurting my baby, but a boy came and did my job for me." Len flinched, Lola wasn't supposed to know of that night, "So, for the rest of the night, I followed Rin and the boy until they came to this house(1). By the way, what is he doing here?" Robert pointed at Len, who gave a step forward.

"Good evening, sir... I'm Len and I live here."

Robert froze on his place hearing those words, there's a teenager living at the same house as his daughter, being able to do anything to her while she was unprotected during her sleep. Seeing her ex-husband's expression, Lola hurried to say, "He is the son of my husband, Len is a good boy…"

"Husband?"

"Yes, I got married again, Robert," the man snorted in response, "Tell the truth, why are you here?"

"I was telling the truth, Lola. I want to take you and Rin with me, to live together as we did before."

When she imagined herself living at the same ceiling as that man again, Rin started to tremble. She didn't know if it was of fear of hatred, but she started to shake and Len noticed it. The blond boy approached her and touched her hand with his, she immediately let his warm fingers wrap around her now cold like ice ones. The scene didn't pass by unnoticed by Robert, who roared, "Take your dirty hands away from my daughter!"

Then, it happened something that no one was waiting. Everything Rin saw was Robert's first hitting Len's face and the boy fell on the ground, taking his hand to his hurt cheek.

"Len!" cried Rin, crouching down at the boy's side.

"Len! Robert, get out of here!" shouted Lola.

"No! I'll only leave this place if you and Rin come with me! I promise I've changed!"

"Get out, Robert! Get out or I'll call the Police!"

The man seemed to hesitate a little. If Lola called the police, that would be bad for him. With the promise he would come back one day, he left through the front door, without looking back.

Rin, who was crouched in front of Len, took his hand away from his hurt cheek. She could feel the heat of the hit emanating from his face and the cheek was already getting a deep red, for sure it would get bruised later. Without thinking, the girl stood up and ran through the door, after the man she refused to call father.

"Rin!" cried Lola, noticing it would have an effect, she turned to Len, "Len... I'm sorry…"

"It's not your fault, Lola," he tried to smile, but it hurt to do so.

"I will go get ice for you…"

Rin looked to the two sided of the street and saw Robert's shirt from afar, turning around the corner. She then ran after him and when she was close enough, she decided to call his attention. She stopped running, panting, but not from tiredness but from hatred.

"Hey, you fucked old man!" Rin's scream made Robert stop walking and turn around to look at her.

"Oh, Rin, sweetie… Did you decide to come with me? I knew it, you're my little Angel!"

"Shut your fucking mouth! Look, you idiot old drunkard, don't you ever show up again, okay? Don't get anywhere near me or my mother, okay? And, especially, if you ever lay a finger on Len again, I will kill you, do you understand? I will kill you!"

(1) refer to chapter 10

Rin's father is crazy and he always puts the blame of everything on Lola, I don't know why.

This end, I to show that Rin is kinda yandere for Len, haha.
