Luckily when I came back to the room Joe had his pants and shirt on. He wore a light pair of jeans, a baseball tee and sneakers. Nice sneakers not running sneakers or anything.
"Shall we?" I smiled holding out my arm.
"We shall." He answered taking my arm. We skipped down the hallway before reaching the elevator. Then we skipped down the street until we reached my dads building. I took deep breaths as we waited for him. I could do this. I could do this. I didn't know how to react when I saw him appear out of the building a couple minutes later.
"Bumble" he exclaimed. Joe choked back a laugh. I death glared him.
"Hi dad." I embraced him in a hug. My dad was dressed in his work garb: a white short sleeved dress shirt, jeans and also nice sneakers.
"And you are?" My dad turned to Joe.
"Joe Walker sir." He introduced himself as he shook his hand. Sir. I liked the Sir. So far so good.
"So I was thinking Shake Shack for dinner?" My father beamed. I smiled excitingly too. After all these years my dad still knew one of my favorite restaurants/ favorite burger joint of all time.
We walked up the block where the line by some miracle wasn't too terrible. We all ordered shack burgers only I ordered a Creamsicle float shake, Joe a chocolate, and my dad a malt.
"How I've missed you." I said to my burger with a mouth full.
"These are great." Joe agreed.
"I always found it funny how you worshiped food yet always stayed so skinny." My dad smiled. I attempted to smile back without burger falling out. I told my dad everything. As much as a jerk he could be I could tell him a lot of stuff easily. He use to blab about my sister a lot because I would go on these walks with him to places like home improvement stores, places that no one else really wanted to go to. But as I got older, those fun times became less and less and that annoyed me. So whenever I got the chance to talk to him I took it.
"Where do you work Mr. Davis may I ask?" Joe said politely. I was so proud of him at this moment I just wanted to hug him.
"I work for Marvel dealing with web comics and minor coding. I've also recently become my own publisher."
I swear Joe was going to spit out his shake.
"R-really?"
Then the boys babbled about his work which I've heard a million times. His work hasn't really changed except that he got a promotion which was new to hear.
"But what about you Bum?" Should I look out for you in a theater near me soon?" He winked. I let out a nervous laugh.
Joe placed his hand on my knee for support.
"Not yet." I smiled.
"Ah well I told you it was a hard business."
I forced a smile. "You did." I said through my teeth.
He took another sip of his shake almost finishing it. He gabbed some more thankfully not about my work life but nerdy stuff like Doctor Who, the Avenger Movies and stuff like that. It was always like a emotional rollarcoaster with him. One minute I was loving his company and his jokes the next I regretted every decision I've ever made ever. It was nerve wracking. We were now done our meal and I'd love every bite of the food.
"Joe is it? Can I have a word with my daughter for a moment?" My dad asked.
"Yeah I'll be right outside." Joe responded. I gave him a last minute help me look before we stepped outside.
"Bumble what are you doing?" He asked. I had no idea what he meant by that.
"Leaving the restaurant?" I guessed. He shook his head I think he was chuckling.
"I meant with your life. When do you plan to get a real job?" I was baffled by this. I opened my mouth to respond but no sound came out.
"I support you as an actress mostly but I think you should have a real job besides waitressing to pay bills."
Still nothing. My throat suddenly became a desert.
"Look there is an opening at the office, a business associate, it pays a lot more than a waitressing job ever will and you can audition for roles here too. Lots of movies take place in New York. I already have a spot for you all you have to do is move. I didn't pay for most of your college for nothing. If you don't do this I'll be extremely disappointed in you."
I just nodded. What just happened? Was I just told I had to move?
"Okay great. Glad we had this talk. You look great by the way. Come on Josh is waiting."
"It's Joe." I mumbled automatically still stunned. I decided to wave whatever I comprehended away for the night. Instead we went to Central Park and walked around. Joe and I already planned on coming tomorrow but it was what he suggested. Joe and I also planned on walking around Broadway like we were going to see a show but never do, and go to both the Natural History Museum and the MET. My dad gave me his old DC comics ID so we could get into the museum for free. Joe gawked.
"You worked for DC comic too?!"
I laughed aloud.
"A long time ago." My dad grinned.
The rest of the night went like I was 10 years old again. We did all the stuff I use to do with my dad. Climbed on the rocks in Central Park. Tossed a football around. Talked. Overall it was a confusing night and experience. My dad seemed to like Joe. Although I think he cringed when Joe mentioned Starkid to him. Other than that my dad never really had a problem with me and boys. I guess cause I had so many guy friends as a kid. It was when they hurt me he went on a rampage. We walked my dad to the closest subway station before Joe and I walked back to our hotel.
"That was interesting." He concluded.
"Yes." I agreed.
"What did he tell you in the restaurant?" Joe asked curiously.
I waved it away.
"I'll tell you tomorrow." I groaned before plopping into bed. I crawled into the comforters trying to wash away the image of my dad mouthing"If you don't do this ill be extremely disappointed in you."
What the hell has my life become?
The next morning, yes we had gotten up in the morning, we quickly dressed and headed to the Central Park zoo. I liked zoos.
"What do you want to see first?" Joe asked looking at the map.
"Giraffes. They're just so fabulous." I answered. Joe shrugged with a grin and we sat and watched giraffes eat for twenty minutes. We made out way around the zoo, mostly amused with otters, giraffes and hippos.
"Hippos are vicious." I hissed, just peeping over the ledge.
"They are not vicious." Joe stated as he rolled his eyes.
"Yeah?" I sassed standing up. I tried to tower over him and failed. "Did YOU ever see the dark side to hippos on the discovery channel?"
Joe rolled his eyes again. "No." He grumbled.
I crossed my arms over my chest.
"Them you wouldn't know what they are capable of."
At the souvenir shop I bought a stuff giraffe and named him Gerald. He looked like a Gerald. Next we went on one of those horse rides. I loved animals. They were so majestic.
"Hey so what did your dad say?" Joe reminded me. I was hoping he would forget. I looked down at the sidewalk. But I told him anyway. I managed to memorize every line he said to me while I was asleep. Joe looked just as confused as I was when I was told.
"What does that even mean?"
"I think that it means that my dad is forcing me to move apparently."
The air felt heavy after that moment. Was that really what was I suppose to be concluding? Had I made a life over on the west coast just to be brought back east?
"Oh." Joe responded. It didn't sound like his voice.
"Yeah." I said. I shook my head. "If that is what he means. It might not. So for now I-we shouldn't worry about it." I forced a small smile. It looked like Joe did too. It was best to just not think about it.
The next day we went to the Natural History Museum. My favorite room was the ocean room. I was always fascinated by the life sized Blue Whale. Also slightly terrified that the wires were just going to snap and crush me. That night we went swimming again. It was even better than the first night even if I wore a less sexier bathing suit. I almost drowned. I'm not the best swimmer. The next day we visited the Met. Joe and I aren't art freaks so to see the whole museum that we wanted to see only took a chunk of the day. That night we got dressed all fancy and toured Broadway like we were some rich bitches. Then we ate at a hot dog stand. Joe tried to get into a show my saying he was on the list. I had to try my best not to crack up and foil the plan, as if there was a plan to begin with. When we got back to the room Joe took a shower. When we came out I was looking out the window.
"Can you believe that place is packed during New Year's Eve." I said aloud referring to Time Square.
"Yeah I guess that is kinda weird to think." I nodded still just staring, hearing the cars honked which now just sounded peaceful instead of annoying.
"Ummm Anna?" Joe asked. When I turned he was in a towel.
"Oh god right!" I exclaimed embarrassed as I ran into the bathroom.
It was hard for me to fall asleep that night. I guess Joe could tell.
"You know he loves you." He mumbled, shifting his position.
"Yeah," I sighed "and sometimes that's what scares me. He wants what's best for me so bad that makes decisions for me."
Joe patted my face.
"Go to sleep."
A let out a small laugh.
"Okay."
Still uneasy I turned over on my side. Joe placed his hand on top of mine before he started snoring. I smiled to myself. I fell asleep easily.
