The One With Monica's New Dad
A Friends Fan Fiction
Notes: Hi Folks! I am reworking my story Admittance and setting it at a later part in the series. This time is between episodes 8 &9 of Season 10 before Monica and Chandler adopt the twins. I figured more is at stake here with Jack admitting the affair because how he will raise his grandkids will be impacted.
One night after dinner Ross called Monica on the phone.
"Hey Mon, did you get a call from Dr. Weinburg?"
Monica looked shocked. "I haven't checked my messages yet. Why did you?"
"Yeah, apparently Dad called an emergency therapy session."
Monica sent Chandler a perplexed look. "What's going on?"
" I don't know but I can tell you that he's been acting strange since after your wedding."
"Do you think maybe he finally talked to Mom about what makes her so passive aggressive toward me."
" I don't know. Maybe. When are you and Chan free to come to the appointment so I can call her back?"
" I don't know.
Chandler snuck up behind his wife and wrapped his arms around her waist.
"Hey buddy, Wednesdays usually work for us" he said.
"Ok, great. I'll call you back once I set up the appointment with the time."
"Sounds good. " Monica hung up the phone.
"This is good news. Maybe we'll finally figure out why your mom is such a bitch to you."
"I don't think you know how relieving that will be."
Chandler kissed the back of Monica's neck passionately. "Oh, I absolutely do." he whispered.
The following Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 Chandler and Monica met Ross outside the counseling center.
"You ready for this?" Ross asked.
" Pretty nervous believe it or not." Monica whispered.
"I'm sure every thing will turn out fine honey." Chandler squeezed her hand tightly.
"Where's Rachel Ross?" Monica asked.
"She had to work late tonight. I'll fill her in on what she missed later on." Ross said.
Once they were sat down in Dr. Weinberg's office Ross was the first to break the ice.
"Isn't Mom coming?"
Jack Gellar shook his head. "No, she's not. We haven't been together for a few years."
Monica and Ross exchanged a shocked glance between each other.
"What are you talking about?" Monica asked
"Believe it or not you two may have thought our marriage was happy but honestly it was all a facade. Your mother and I kept a secret from you kids for a long time."
"Um.. so Jack does this secret explain why Judy was always so passive aggressive toward Monica?" Chandler asked.
Jack looked at his son in law sadly. "Unfortunately Chandler it does and the reason is quite heartbreaking."
Ross Monica and Chandler exchanged a glance between each other.
"What's going on?" Monica whispered.
Dr. Weinberg cleared her throat. "Your mother had an affair with someone else 9 months before you were born Monica."
Monica jumped up from her seat angrily. "And you knew about this all along Daddy?"
Jack looked at his daughter sadly. "Yes, I did Monica. Trust me I wanted to tell you and Ross a long time ago."
"Why the hell didn't you?! " Monica asked
Jack Gellar sighed " Your mother pressured me not to. Trust me I wanted to tell you at Thanksgiving a few years ago when your mother let it slip that someone was left at the alter."
"So she was talking about leaving the person she had the affair with behind?" Ross asked
Jack Gellar nodded his head. "Yes, that's correct son."
" When did you and Mom get divorced?" Ross asked
Jack Gellar cleared his throat. "I filed for divorce right after Chandler and Monica's wedding. Things just got finalized last spring Believe me that felt good. I wish I had ended much sooner and not stayed in such a miserable relationship for so long. ."
"How will this impact how you raise your grandchildren?" Monica asked.
"That depends on where you kids are living and if you're planning to stay in the city?"
Ross looked sheepish. "Well, I mean things are complicated for me. What else is new right? Joey admitted a few months ago that he has feelings for Rachel and he said he wants to help take care of Emma too so we're working those details out."
"And what about you?" Dr. Weinberg looked at Monica and Chandler.
"We're going to adopt and we're meeting the birth parents after Christmas. We fly to Ohio on January 8th." Chandler replied.
"Are you planning to stay in the city?"
"Right now we're still thinking about it." Monica replied.
"Dad, is Mom going to help with raising Ben and Emma?" Ross asked.
Jack Gellar let out a sigh. "No, we're not speaking anymore. I cut ties with her because of how she treated me for so many this years with pressuring me to keep this secret from you kids for so long.. especially from you Harmonica."
"I'm almost afraid to ask who you're talking about Daddy." Monica whispered.
"Then I'll go ahead and ask.. who did Judy have the affair with?" Chandler asked/
"It was Richard."
Silence hung in there air for about fifteen minutes.
"Can someone wake me up from this nightmare please? I don't even fucking believe this." Monica buried her face into Chandler's shoulder.
"Mon. sweetie everything will be okay.. I promise." Chandler whispered.
Ross let out a low whistle. "I can't believe Mom would betray our family like this. And to think that Richard and Monica dated and that Richard was in our friend group for a little while.""
:Jack put his hand on his son's shoulder. "If your mother had not played puppet master and had been so controlling of Richard and I then I would have never allowed Richard to date Monica at all believe me."
Chandler stood up and faced his father in law. Tears were at the edges of his eyes.
"I fucking hate Judy for what she has done and will never forgive her. She has truly hurt Monica in unspeakable ways. The fact that you allowed her to manipulate you and Richard like that makes me even more furious Jack."
Jack pulled Chandler into a strong hug. "I know you're upset Chandler and trust me I don't blame you. Judy was a cruel and selfish person. She only cared about herself and never cared about anyone else especially Monica. Thank you for loving her so completely. She really could not ask for someone better to be by her side."
Monica stood up and wrapped her arms around Chandler's waist. :I second this statement. I love you so much Chandler."
"Sweetheart, I love you too and wish I could take your pain away." Chandler kissed his wife's forehead gently.
Ross cleared his throat. "Dad, you're not thinking of asking Richard to replace Mom in helping take care of Ben and Emma are you?"
Yes, I was. I haven't called him yet. That's why I called this counseling session to order. I wanted to talk to you kids about this before I talk to him."
"Was he too afraid to come tonight?" Ross asked.
"Yes. he was. He doesn't want Monica to resent him."
"I don't resent him. If there's anyone that I resent it's probably Mom." Monica whispered. She was now seated on the couch again.
"Have you considered telling him that?" Dr. Weinberg asked,
Monica nodded. "I will call him when we get home."
Jack Gellar sat down on the couch and opened his arms to Monica. "Come here Harmonica." he whispered.
Monica had started to cry again and fell into her father's embrace.
" Sweetheart, are you going to be okay?"
Monica shrugged."" I don't know. I guess I am just so shocked by all of this. How could you let Mom treat you like that Daddy? I feel so awful for you."
Jack Gellar let out a long sigh. " I had to be strong for you and your brother honey. I knew that our family was going to fall apart otherwise."
Monica kissed her father's cheek softly. "Thank you for protecting us. I appreciate it. I never knew you were hurting and if you had told me we could have helped each other through this."
"So you don't resent me?"
Monica shook her head. "Of course I don't. I love you .so much Daddy."
Jack brushed his daughter's bangs out of her eyes kissing her forehead gently.
"I love you too Monica. Even though I've known for a long time that we weren't related by blood you will always be my little girl."
When Monica got home from the counseling office the first thing she did was go to the study to call Richard. He answered on the first ring.
"Hello Richard, this is Monica."
There was silence on the other end of the line. It lasted for ten minutes.
"Hi sweetheart. I'm assuming that you just got back from family therapy."
"Yes, I did."
"Are you doing okay?"
Monica let out a long sigh.
"I could be better by a lot... I've never felt this confused in my whole entire life Richard."
"I know this is a lot to take in."
"It is."
"Everything is going to be okay Monica. I promise."
"I know." Monica whispered
Dr. Weinberg asked me if I resent you."
"Do you?"
"Of course not Richard. My mother treated you and my father so horribly. I now understand why she treated me so horribly all these years too."
"Do you regret dating me Monica?"
Monica was silent.
"Are you still there?"
Monica let out a sigh.
"No. I don't. Not at all. Our love was very special."
"It certainly was."
"Do you think that your parents reacted they way they did when they first found out about us being together because of the affair?"
Monica let out another sigh. "Yes., I do. My father said at counseling that if my mother had not been so controlling of you both our relationship would have never happened in the first place. He would have not allowed us to be together. Can I be honest with you about something Richard?"
"Sure."
Tears were starting to form at the end of Monica's eyes. "I think my mom resented me all these years because of the affair."
"She did. That's why your father and I were forced to keep the affair a secret from you and Ross."
"You don't resent me do you Richard?"
"No honey. Of course I don't."
Monica cleared her throat. " I think what made our relationship so completely special to me was the fact that I felt validated. You made me feel loved in a way my mother never did Richard."
"I know baby, I know. "
There were ten minutes of silence. Richard cleared his throat.
" Do you want to have a father-daughter relationship with me or does it make you too uncomfortable based on our past history?"
Tears continued to flow down Monica's cheeks. "Chandler and I are flying to Ohio on January 8th to meet with parents we are going to be adopting children from. I want you to be part of helping us raise the babies. It would mean a lot to both of us actually."
"I'm so excited for you both Monica. That's great news."
"I'm glad that we had this talk Richard." I love you."
"I love you too Monica. Good night,"
"Good night,:
The call was disconnected. Monica grabbed tissues from the box on the desk and dabbed at her eyes She dialed her mother's cell phone. The call went directly to voicemail.
"Hi Mom, This is Monica. Daddy just told me and Ross about your affair with Richard.
You are a fucking coward for keeping this secret from us and you are a horrible person for the way you treated Daddy and Richard. Don't bother calling me back because I never want to talk to you or see you ever again. Have a nice life. I will not miss you at all. Goodbye."
There was a knock at the door. It was Chandler.
"You're crying. What's wrong ?"
"It's been a rough hour and a half." Monica whispered.
Concern filled Chandler's eyes. "Sweetheart, I'm so worried about you. Let's go into the bedroom and talk about it okay
Monica nodded. "Okay."
Chandler took his wife's hand gently and led her into the bedroom. They took a seat on the bed. Monica's eyes averted away from Chandler's gaze.
Chandler cupped Monica's face into his hands and wiped her tears away gently with the tips of his fingers.
"Mon, I hate to see how much how much you're hurting. Are you going to be okay?
"OH Chandler, this has been so overwhelming. I've never felt so confused. "
"This definitely makes us view your family dynamic a little bit differently doesn't it?"
Monica nodded her head, "I'm so angry at my mother. I'll never forgive her for what she did or how she has hurt me."
Chandler opened his arms. "Come here honey." he whispered.
Continuing to sob Monica fell into her husband's embrace. Chandler's arms enveloped around her and he rocked her back and forth for ten minutes.
"I resent your mother so much for how much she has hurt Monica and I will never forgive her either. Everything is going to be okay. She'll never hurt you again."
Monica nodded. "I left her a voicemail telling her how angry we all are at her. I know that she will not apologize so I told her not to bother calling me back."
Chandler smiled. "I'm so proud of you. How did the phone call with Richard go?"
"Fine. I told him that we want him to help raise the babies. I hope that's okay with you."
Chandler's smile grew wider. "Absolutely! Everything will work out. I promise."
"I love you so much Chandler." Monica whispered.
"We'll get through this together honey. I love you too.. always." Chandler kissed his wife's lips passionately.
