I wandered out of the dorms rather early, knowing that my uncles would be asleep until Yukio woke up, which was a good hour away.
Turning to the little demon I smiled. "You're sure that they're here, then?" I asked, and he made a little kree noise to the affirmative. It was brilliant that Kione had succeeded in bringing his friends along to the town, and I was looking forward to a little rendezvous with my kind of demon.
…
Yukio was up, and shaking Rin awake sharply, resulting in his hand being swatted away by the bad tempered boy (A/N In my world Rin is never a morning person) before he went to wake up his niece.
The bed was made neatly, there was no sign of Kione, and her shoes and coat were gone from their respective places.
Inwardly Yukio swore before racing back to the room he shared with his brother.
"Rin! Wake up! Wake up now!" Rin sat up and yawned, showing off sharp teeth.
"What? What is it?" he asked, looking like he wanted to go back to sleep, before Yukio dropped the bombshell.
"She's gone."
…
The coal tars spun around, Kasumi playing what would have been a game of pat-a-cake for children. They were so sweet, in her opinion, and always okay to play games with. Kione had stayed sitting on her shoulder. As she spun around, they followed her.
"KASUMI!"
Rin was running towards her at full speed. His niece froze like a child with their hand caught in the cookie jar. Damn!
He grabbed her wrist. "We've been looking all over for you! You were playing with them? Are you mental or a stupid kid?"
She made a face as the coal tars fled rather too quickly for her to be happy about it. Rin looked like he was going to explode, while Yukio had finished shooing the little demons away.
"It's dangerous to let them swarm around you, Kasumi!" he told her. She made a face.
"As one of them, I'm not in any trouble here," she said, before Rin growled.
"You are in trouble. With us!"
She stuck her tongue out and dissolved quickly, so that Rin was left holding empty air. Watery footsteps appeared on the ground, running away from the pair determinedly, while Yukio followed them at a steady pace.
"A word of advice, Rin. Never try to keep hold of someone made of mist." He smiled, while Rin growled, following the footsteps.
"Kasumi, it's also obvious that pulling that means you are no longer able to materialise fully. Why don't we go to Sir Pheles?" he called to the girl they were no longer able to see. The footsteps halted, and a hiccupping sound came from in front of them. Rin found Kione settling on his shoulder, but put up with it.
…
"Oh dear, so that ability kicked in? Poor little Kasumi!"
Sir Pheles had a grin like a Cheshire cat, before setting a vial of potion down on the desk. It floated up slightly, and in an instant Kasumi stood in front of them. She hugged Rin and Yukio before picking up Kione and settling the coal tar on her shoulder. Her hair was slightly bedraggled, and she swept her fingers through it.
"Thank you!" she chirped, looking out of the window happily. A pale look came over her face and she backed away before running out of the room. Rin looked confused whereas Yukio rushed to the window.
"I don't see anything that could have spooked her like that!" he pointed out, just as puzzled as his brother. "Just a boy with green hair."
The boy was now grinning up at the window, in a way that seriously unnerved Yukio. His eyes were a disturbing colour of yellow, almost like a frog's…
Or a Leaper's…
Yukio ran out of the room after his niece.
