So in this chapter the soldier's identity is revealed! Just as a side note, I still don't own LoK or Anastasia!
That night, Iroh carried his limp soldier's frame into the privacy of her own quarters. He set her down gently on the bed and gently took the mask off. He heard a knock at the door, and turned around just in time to see his grandparents coming in.
"How is our little phoenix?" Zuko asked as he closed the door behind him, "I could tell by the look in Katara's eyes that she was going to survive. As well as Katara knows how to keep a secret, her eyes reveal things to those of us that know how to read them."
"Or her heartbeat, but I spoke to Lin about keeping that a secret so that we can keep her safe. She'll be fine," Iroh nodded. "She just needs to rest."
"A wise decision, you're learning well," Mai praised, and Iroh smiled softly as he looked fondly down at the sleeping brunette. "She has done remarkably well tonight."
"Indeed, I didn't think that she would be able to redirect lightning mere days after I taught her how," Zuko added, and Mai shot him a glare. "I thought it best, as she is strong enough for it, and was asking how to as well. Also, she seems adamant that she'll need it in an Agni Kai, which as we can see, she did."
"I thought it was you who taught her that," Iroh said playfully. "But what of her fears of the other elements?"
"Hm? What do you mean?" Mai asked confused.
"She was afraid of water and earth as well as fire," Iroh explained, and Zuko sighed in frustration.
"She seemed fine around them," Zuko edged. "The only fear I saw of either was that she wouldn't go swimming in any water that was even remotely cold."
"That explains a lot, since Rasputin was killed by falling through ice," Iroh chuckled. "He was a fool to attack our Anastasia so, but she has won, and her victory was well-rewarded."
"Yes, for us and for her world," Zuko said with his eyes ablaze ever so slightly. "But it is a shame that her eldest sister is a… brat, as she called our Anastasia. She is most definitely powerful, Iroh, of that I am certain. She carries my great-grandfather Avatar Roku, as well as Avatar Aang's blessings. Be careful with her."
"I will, and you know it," Iroh said tartly. "You know I would never hurt Anastasia purposefully. I've come to realize a few things about her. Believe it or not, I've already proposed to her."
"Iroh, you proposed to her inside that metal tent, didn't you?" Mai asked scolding him, and he turned to her abashed.
"Now, Mai, I'm sure he has his reasons," Zuko said defending his grandson. "Although I won't deny that it was quite unbecoming of you."
"Well, Olga had been trying to win me over, and I knew that they would probably get into another fight if I didn't intervene," Iroh explained, "Aside from that, I came to realize that I love her in the time that she was travelling."
"Well, I think we'd best leave the two lovebirds to their antics," Mai shot back, and Iroh flushed. "Finally a normal reaction from you, Iroh, it's far past time for that."
"Grandmother," Iroh grumbled as Mai walked out and Zuko went to the door.
"You know she is only teasing," he chided just before he, too, left his grandson alone with the youngest female Romanov.
For a while Iroh simply stood there and watched Anastasia sleep in the soldier uniform with the mask in the crook of his arm. But as her sleep became disturbed, he knew he had to wake her soon, but gently so he wouldn't scare her or worse – cause her to react in a way that she would attack him.
"Anya," Iroh said gently shaking her shoulder, and she hesitantly opened her eyes and blinked the sleep out of them.
"Iroh?" she rasped, and he nodded with a wide Cheshire-like grin.
"You played the part of a wonderful soldier," he said calmly, "A remarkable Agni Kai for one so young to firebending."
"Your grandfather took me somewhere to get some help," she admitted, "It was large, and I had to do some sort of Tai Chi dance…"
"You mean the island with two dragons?" Iroh asked, shocked at hearing this. "I've only heard stories about that place, and even grandmother didn't believe Grandfather when he said it was where he had to relearn firebending!"
"It's true, the natives recognized him," Anastasia nodded as she sat up wearily, and Iroh said nothing as his eyebrows went up towards his hairline. "Really, it was the dragons that helped me get over my fear of fires."
"That's-wow, that's great," Iroh said shocked. "But that will be a story for another time. What were you saying about your grandmother earlier? Something about a lullaby?"
"I had begged her not to go to Paris when I was young," Anastasia explained quietly. "The separation was so hard, I hated it. So she gave me a music box to make the separation easier by singing a lullaby that we had."
"May I hear it? If you have the voice for it right now, that is," Iroh said quickly, and to his calm delight, she nodded.
"It was one that we had sung often. I think it would work for us as well, since you will probably be gone for long periods of time as a General," she mused, and he nodded. He then leaned forwards to put his elbows on his knees, to help him relax as she began singing.
On the wind, Cross the sea
Hear this song and remember
Soon you'll be Home with me
Once upon a December
Her eyes misted over at the end, and she had almost started crying again when she felt Iroh's thumb gently wipe away her tears.
"She had given me a music box to play our lullaby, to sing me to sleep while she was in Paris. She had told me that I could listen to it and pretend that it was her singing me to sleep," Anastasia said fondly smiling before frowning. "That was just a few minutes before Rasputin attacked."
"I'll be happy to have another one made if that's what you want," Iroh murmured, and she looked up at him sadly. "Unless you'd like something else as an engagement present – after all, I haven't exactly given you the customary courting presents yet."
"The necklace was the key to the music box," Anastasia said wistfully. "I'd like something special of ours to be the key, something that both of us will have."
"I think I can come up a new pendant for the necklace," he murmured, "and a bracelet to put the ring and your original pendant on."
"I'd like that," Anastasia admitted. "Thank you, you don't have to do this."
"I'm your fiancée," he pointed out kissing her forehead. "I'm supposed to dote on you."
Dyaw! So cute! Who'd have thought that my boyfriend would treat me the same way? *sighs happily*
