He looked to his far right and there she was. Her dark blonde hair was matted against her head under a severe layer of dirt. Her eyes were sunk and looked hazy and tired. Gashes and small cuts littered her bare arms and legs and her torn clothes hung limply off her thin frame. A large cut trickled blood from her forehead and tear stains lined her cheeks. Lark edged nervously over to Fili and sat on the opposite side of Dwalin, her gaze lingered on Kili before she looked at him. There was an awkward silence.
"So...so much death...I should've been there to protect you, but all I was was used. A weapon, an item of ridicule; to be used and tortured until I had served my purpose. Your uncle and my friend are dead because I wasn't there Fili and I want you to remember that...and you Dwalin. I am not worth the dirt on the feet of all who died...for I'm a fool...easily swayed by the guilt in my heart...and I'm sorry."
Fresh tears fell down the lines of those previous and Fili stretched out a hand and took it in her dirtied one in his own.
"You were used yes but Lark...you're here aren't you?"
She looked at him quizzically.
"Yes?"
"And you found us...and brought us here..."
"Mhm...but if I had been there sooner then maybe..."
Dwalin looked at her hard.
"Now lass. What happened to Thorin and yer elf friend Arandur wasnae yer fault! Ye were tricke into being a monster and there was nothing ye could've done. What matters now is what we do in honour of them...alright?"
This was directed at both Lark and Fili, who looked at the hurt warrior with sad eyes.
"Alright..."
There was another silence before Fili turned to lark.
"Have you been seen to yet?"
She shook her head silently and cast a longing look at Kili. Dwalin sighed and placed an arm on her shoulder and got up.
"I'll get him lass. Ye keep an eye on these two."
She nodded her thanks before looking down again. Fili looked at his brother sleeping and sighed. His chest still ached and his heart to, for the loss of his uncle was a wound that would never fully heal. Lark's shoulders began to quake and she covered her mouth with her other hand. The blonde prince sat up, ignoring the shooting pains that went through as he did so, and pulled her into a hug.
"shhhhh little sister. Everything will be alright...shh..."
He begun to sing quietly, as she sobbed into his shoulder.
"The broken clock is a comfort, it helps me sleep tonight. Maybe it can stop tomorrow from stealing all my time. I am here still waiting though I have my doubt. I am damaged at best, likely you've already figure out. I'm falling apart, I'm barely breathing. With a broken heart that's still beating. In the pain, though, there is healing..."
The sobs silenced as Fili rubbed circles on his brother's Ones back. She leant back and smiled a little.
"Thank you Fili."
He nodded and wiped the own tears from his eyes, it was ok for him to cry in front of his little sister. That song was to comfort him as it was to her. They both cast a glance to Kili and sighed in sync.
"I need to tell him..."
Fili looked at Lark. She was still searching Kili for any sign of life other than his shallow breaths.
"Tell him what?"
"About the baby..."
His jaw dropped.
"...how...what...when?!"
She shook her head and shrugged before placing a hand on her stomach.
"I don't know. I don't even know how she survived all the mess I threw her into, but she did...she's strong...and she will be stronger..."
She met Fili's eyes.
"Just like her dad..."
"And her mum..."
Lark choked on new tears at Fili's words before they both fell into a solemn silence and waited.
