Kili mumbled sleepily before opening his eyes. The light pierced them and he groaned, a mild pain ached in his left leg and he ran a hand over his face.
"Glad to see you awake again Kee!"
Kili managed to croak out of his dry throat.
"Fili."
His brother nodded and held a cup to his little brother's lips. Kili drank the water hungrily and it wet his throat. He coughed a little as Fili withdrew the cup and placed it on the floor. Kili looked at his brother. His eyes looked sad and he had small circles bagging under them. The small bulge from where his bandages where tied pushed from under his tunic and his crooked smile hung limply on his face. Kili frowned and shuffled up his bed. A numb pain coursed through his leg as he did so, but he ignored it and attempted not to wince.
"What happened Fili?"
The blonde prince sighed.
"Thorin...Uncle...he..."
Fili tried to swallow the lump in his throat, but it refused to go away. Kili met his brother's eyes and understood. There would be no seeing Thorin alive. No time for them to apologise for what they had spoken between one another. The brunette dwarf leant forward and whimpered quietly as tears left him. A heavy hand, from his crying brother, rubbed circles on his back until the tears had stopped. Fili pulled him close and leant his forehead against Kili's, looking deep into his brother's brown eyes.
"Uncle...he...he would've been so happy that we made it home. So proud of...of everything we've done. We should rejoice for him...I..."
Kili shook his head as he watched tears roll down Fili's face. He knew it was unfair and soon to ask, but he needed to know.
"When will you...you know become king?"
Fili sat back in his chair and shrugged. Both ran their hands in their hair before looking at each other.
"I think it will probably be in a few weeks. We...we need to have the funeral first...you know give Thorin his piece before everything..."
Kili nodded and looked down his bed. A twinge of pain shot up his left calf and up to his shoulder.
"How long before I can walk again?"
Fili chuckled softly.
"Always desperate to be better. You always hated being ill...Oin thinks that once you have eaten something and have had a wash, then you should start trying out those crutches he had Bofur make for you."
Kili spotted the wooden crutches at the end of his bed. They were perfectly finished and looked smooth and well made. Typical Bofur.
"How long have I been out for?"
Fili shrugged.
"Apparently I was out for a good few days, but I woke a couple of days ago so about a week or so."
Kili let out a long whistle through his teeth. It was then he remembered her voice and his heart twitched and ached painfully. Fili quirked an eyebrow at his brother, but said nothing.
"Well I've got to see Oin, my bandages need changing and then I've got to um talk to Balin and Dain about the funeral...be nice to the nurses before you go running off."
Kili pulled himself from his thoughts and smirked.
"When am I not nice?"
His brother waved a hand as he walked out of the healing rooms and then a small flock of nurses descended on him.
...
As he limped on his crutches through Erebor's large main hall, Kili gaped at how much space Dain's army took up. They were everywhere! He could only imagine what it would be like if a whole city of dwarves lived under the mountain. His eyes, however, did not search for Dain's soldiers, they searched for her. Any sign of her, blue ocean eyes, her sandy her...he listened for her voice. Soldiers shoved him from every side, muttering apologies for they didn't realize it was the prince as he looked about as royal as Azog probably. Then he heard it...the bell that was her.
"Gandalf, Mr Beorn, Bilbo please...I'm alright. I'm just pregnant...it's not as if I'm mortally wounded...there are other's here who require more attention than I do...so please..."
There she was. A pale green dress hung loosely on her and her hair was swept off her face. He could see scratches going down her neck and arms and he personally wanted to kill every single person who had made them. He wanted to run to her and as he quickened his pace the pain in his leg shot up and he winced. Gandalf caught his eye and smiled warmly. Beorn and Bilbo gave him a nod before turning away and walking off. Gandalf bent and whispered in her ear and then she turned and her breath caught in her throat.
Brown eyes met blue and both filled with tears. Lark cupped her hands over her mouth and sucked in a shaky breath...hardly daring to believe that he was just a few footsteps away. Kili smiled and his arms shook against his crutches as he tried to contain himself. Gandalf edged away from the pair to give them their privacy and she slowly walked up to Kili. She stopped just a few inches away from him and his hands itched to hold her instead of the wood beneath his fingers. Lark spoke first.
"I was...I thought..."
She was cut off by him dropping his crutches and pulling her into him. Crashing his lips upon her, he growled into the hungry kiss. Encircling her waist, he used her for support and she helped by looping her arms round his neck and tangling her hands in his hair. She had missed him so much...she moaned quietly and smiled against his lips...not caring the fact that people could see. He pulled away first, for air and she buried her face in his neck. His voice was ragged as he whispered in her ear.
"I missed you!...I thought...that you were..."
Lark placed a finger against his lips.
"Shhh...dorniti...it's ok...I'm right here..."
Tears fell into her hair as he nuzzled his face deep into her locks. He pulled her closer and felt and small bump in where her smooth, flat stomach should be. He swallowed nervously and cast his eyes down.
"I...how is the baby?"
Lark pulled back a little stunned. Kili answered her.
"Yavanna."
Lark nodded and placed a hand against her belly. Kili covered it with his own and looked warmly at his One. He felt a warm sensation travel up his spine and his eyes widened. He looked at Lark who nodded.
"She's alright...we're all alright..."
She kissed Kili again and whispered close to his ear.
"Welcome home!"
