Author's Note:
I am so incredibly sorry this update has been so delayed. I really didn't plan it, that way. Life just happened to get in the way-as it usually does. Still, that's no excuse. And, I am so unbelievably grateful for those of you who have stuck around and are actually still reading this story!
Roar
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancin' through the fire | Cause I am a champion and you're gonna hear me roar | Louder louder than the lion | Cause I am a champion and you're gonna hear me roar | Oh oh oh oh oh oh | Oh oh oh oh oh oh | Oh oh oh oh oh oh | You're gonna hear me roar
Now, I'm floating like a butterfly | Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes | I went from a zero to my own hero
"Now, I realize that I instructed you all to stay close to a vampire or werewolf during the battle." Shaelynn began, pacing back and forth in front of the Avengers with Jasper at her side as they prepared for training. "However, in order to win, we must plan every possible scenario-no matter how unlikely or far-fetched it may seem." She elaborated. Watching his little girl instructing the rest of his team-even in these circumstances, with an impending battle looming over their heads-still made Bruce feel rather proud of her. Just her mere presence and the way that she carried herself commanded attention and, from the looks of it, that's exactly she was getting. "This means planning for the possibility of one of the Volturi soldiers isolating you away from the rest of us." With that statement, she moved into position, standing in front of Jasper, posed to strike. "Now, the Cullens, werewolves, and I will do our best to keep an eye on the rest of you..." Shaelynn paused, just then as she heard a chorus of growls from the wolves behind her. "But, if you do find yourself going toe-to-toe with a Volturi soldier...Well, for one thing, you're probably pretty well screwed. But, the best-and, quite possibly only-thing you can do for yourself is to keep moving. The second they get their hands on you, you're finished." As she finished her explanation, Shaelynn began sparring with Jasper, demonstrating a variation of evasion tactics the Avengers could employ. "Now, unfortunately for you guys, the Volturi will be able to move much much faster than you. Your best bet is maneuverability." Shaelynn explained as she continued dodging Jasper's attacks.
The Avengers watched-almost hypnotically-as Jasper and Shaelynn continued sparring before them. "Just remember to duck behind as many obstacles as you can find until one of the Cullens, the wolves or I can get to you. Also, Bella will be using her shield to protect you all from the Volturi's psychic attacks-which, they seem ever so fond of..." Shaelynn finished, contemplatively.
"I'm sorry...Did you just say 'psychic' attacks?" Steve asked, still attempting to wrap his mind around the idea of vampires and werewolves and psychic abilities.
"Yes, Captain, I did." Shaelynn replied, very matter-of-factly, as she and Jasper finished their sparring match. "The Volturi will deploy every dirty trick in the book to defeat us-which means that Jane and Alec will likely be on the front line of their army-"
"Their army?" Barton interjected, curiously. "Just how damn many of them will there be?"
"Speaking from previous experience..." Shaelynn began, cryptically. "Far too damn many to count..." Sighing, she carried on where she left off before Barton had interrupted. "As I was saying, Jane and Alec will likely be leading the charge. Now, Jane and Alec have opposing abilities. Jane uses your own mind against you to inflict unimaginably excruciating pain throughout your entire body. Whereas, Alec cuts off all five of your senses." Shaelynn explained. "They typically use him for their more humane executions." She added as an afterthought, gaining a simultaneous shudder from the Avengers. "Bella's shield will help protect you from those abilities."
"And, in the meantime?" Natasha asked, curiously.
"In the meantime, as I said before, you are all to remain strictly on the defensive. The moment you try to attack one of the Volturi soldiers, you are done. They will kill you before any of us can come to your rescue." Shaelynn replied. "Now, the Cullens and I will act as the Volturi for the purposes of this training session. The wolves will be on your side. I want each of you to pick one of them and stay close to them."
Several hours later, after the Avengers had all been worn down from training, Shaelynn found herself out on the balcony of her room after Tony had been generous enough to offer to let the wolves and vampires stay at the tower until after the battle. "It's all right, Captain..." She greeted, cheekily, sensing Steve's presence behind her. "You can come on out here..." Though Steve couldn't see, given that Shaelynn had her back turned to him, she smirked devilishly as she added playfully "I won't bite..."
Although he knew he should be, he didn't feel threatened by Shaelynn's joke-for reasons he couldn't even begin to comprehend. He simply continued to watch as the night wind blew her chestnut brown hair back behind in silky ribbons while the moonlight cast an ethereal glow on the skin he could see, before he snapped to his senses and stepped out on to the balcony next to Shaleynn. After a brief silence, he asked one of the many questions floating around in his head. "How'd you know it was me?"
Snorting slighlty, Shaelynn replied, as though it were obvious "It's a vampire thing." She shrugged, pointing to her ear, she added "Super-hearing's all part of the package." Steve still couldn't believe how casual she was about this whole thing.
Steve still couldn't understand the nervousness or awkwardness he felt around Shaelynn. Another brief pause fell over the two of them before Steve spoke again. "So...I couldn't help noticing the lack of a...well the lack of...of a...a bed...in your room..."
Smirking slightly at the unintended innuendo, Shaelynn simply remarked. "Don't need it." Seeing the confused look on the captain's face, she shrugged as she added "Again, it's a vampire thing...We don't sleep..." She explained, lightly.
"'Don't sleep'?" Steve questioned, his voice disbelieving. "How do you not sleep?"
Shrugging lightly, again, Shae replied "We just don't. We don't need to sleep, like humans do." Checking her watch, Shae added "Speaking of which, it's late. You should be getting your rest."
Shaking his head, Steve stepped up and leaned against the railing alongside Shaelynn. "I can't sleep knowing that these...Volturi people are coming for your dad and we have no idea when or where they'll show up..."
With a knowing sigh, Shae replied "Yeah, I suppose I know what you mean...If I did sleep, I probably wouldn't be able to, right now, either." She admitted, worriedly.
"Earlier, you mentioned something about the Volturi doing this sort of thing once before?" Steve asked, slowly gaining his confidence.
"Yeah..." Shae began. "Not long after Renesmee was born, one of the Volturi spies saw her and Bella out in the woods while Renesmee was out catching snowflakes. The spy made the mistaken assumption that Renesmee was an immortal child."
"But, isn't she?" Steve interjected, confused.
"No, she isn't." Shaelynn disagreed. "You see...An immortal child is a regular human child who is bitten and turned into a vampire-which is highly illegal among our kind." She explained. "However, Renesmee was born half-human and half-vampire. Therefore, she is not an immortal child. Something which the Volturi claimed they had come to contest."
"What are you talking about?" Steve wondered, aloud.
"They used the spy's report about Renesmee as a cover. What they were really there to do was to incite a battle to gain Alice as part of their army." Shae explained, recalling how they'd nearly fought to the death to protect her niece. "She had to show them a vision of how the battle would have played out, had they gone through with it, in order to get them to back off."
"What do you mean, 'she had to show them'?" Steve wondered, still confused about the whole thing.
"Well, their leader, Aro, is a touch telepath...With a touch of your hand, he can read every thought on your mind. So, she showed him the vision she'd had of how the battle between them and us would have gone down. She showed the rest of us drawings of what she had seen-once it was all said and done-and...it wasn't pretty...for either side. But...We did come out ever so slightly on top."
"Really?" Steve asked, surprised. "How bad was it?"
"Well, it all started when Alice realized that nothing any of us said or did would change their minds and she sent Aro flying through the air. A couple of other Volturi henchmen restrained Alice in preparation for Aro's revenge. That pissed Carlisle off and he charged through their ranks to get to Alice. Unfortunately, Aro intercepted him and literally ripped his head off." Shaelynn paused to allow that information to sink in when she saw Steve's eyes nearly bulge out of his head. "They burned his body right in front of us. It sent us all into action-we were out for blood. And, it wasn't just the Cullens and myself. We had recruited covens from all over the world to testify to the fact that Renesmee was, in fact, half-human. They were all just as outraged as the Cullens and I were at Carlisle's death. Jasper was the next casualty. Alice was restrained as she watched in horror as her own mate was murdered right before her very eyes."
"'Her mate'?" Steve questioned, still trying to understand everything Shaelynn was throwing at him.
"It's what vampires call their soul-mate. It's the one person you want to spend the rest of your immortality with..." Steve couldn't help noticing how Shaelynn looked him directly in the eye with a strange wistfulness in her golden eyes he couldn't quite explain. "The one person you see yourself being with forever."
A brief, awkward silence fell over them before Shaelynn cleared her throat before continuing on with her previous story. "Anyway...That was when we finally started evening up the score. Emmitt managed to take down Alec which pissed Jane the hell off- he was her brother. One of the wolves took out another Volturi member right at Jane's feet...Poor thing never stood a chance...One of the other wolves saw it go down and sounded the alarm...Benjamin (one of the other vampires we brought in) heard the distress call and set off an earthquake which created a crater that swallowed up several Volturi and, unfortunately, Esme was dragged in as well. She was clinging to the ledge when one of the wolves pulled the Volturi henchman off of her-sadly, the wolf fell in to the Earth's molten center, too." Shaelynn paused again before continuing.
"Edward fell in, as well...Fortunately, he made it out-taking out another Volturi henchman in the process." She continued on. "After that, Alice cornered Jane and hand-delivered her to Sam (the leader of the wolves...)" Smirking slightly, Shae added "That really pissed off the rest of the Volturi." Next, Shaelynn continued her story "Next, the Denali sisters took out another one of the Volturi's higher officers...Caius, one of Aro's right-hand men-sotaspeak...Together, Edward and Bella took out Aro-effectively ending the battle."
Steve couldn't believe what he had heard. "Wow..." He admitted, both impressed and terrified. "Sounds like the Volturi sure put up one hell of a fight..."
"They would have. Fortunately, after seeing his own death play out before him, Aro decided to listen to reason and back off. That war would have devastated both sides." Shaelynn admitted. "Unfortunately, I don't know if this time will be that simple." She finished, hanging her head, hopelessly.
