WARNING: IT'S NOT CRACK! This is an old angst piece I wrote forever ago that was originally supposed to have it's own story. But I decided to scrap that idea and what I had into this saga, since it fits so darn well. It's also a tad different from my other stuff, because it's less about history and more about the countries' personal lives.
I very obviously don't own any of these splendid characters -though I won't sell myself short, because I have some cool OCs- they belong to Hima-papa.

.:A World Beyond My Reach:.
"Who?"
America looked at the white bear in his lap and followed the paw that was pointing at the bear's owner; his younger brother who was outside frolicking with England. "That's Canada." He answered simply, still amazed that the bear couldn't remember his own owner's name. Granted, Canada couldn't seem to remember Kuminjuro's name either so he guessed they were even.
"No, no!" The bear shook his head and pointed again, "Who?" The nation's eyebrows furrowed, "Um, England?"
"No, no, no!" the bear insisted, flailing his front legs in his frustration and grabbed America's face turning to look out the window where the other nations were, "Who~?"
America blinked blankly, then his eyes saddened. "I honestly have no idea." He sighed and leaned against his chair staring at the ceiling when something poked him, he looked down again to see Kuminjuro looking at him intently, his head tilted to the side.
"Why are you sad?"
America smiled softly and scratched the little bear's ears, "When I was little, England would always tell me stories. Stories about fairies, dragons, and elves… they were so fascinating and I wanted to be apart of that world and even though I never could actually get there, I allowed my imagination to paint that world for me. Then one day I caught England talking to them."
.:.:.:.:.:.
America sat up from his bed and began, rubbing his tired eyes, "Who's making all that noise?" he mumbled sleepily as he slid from his bed, and padded down the stairs.
The voice grew louder and clearer with each approaching step.
What was England doing still up?
He poked his little head around the corner to see England happily conversing with...air? America furrowed his brows maybe England was drunk? With a sigh America emerged from the shadows, preparing to coax the man to his bed, but England was surprisingly alert for being wasted.
"Oh America, what are you doing up?"
Hmm, no slurring either, maybe he was getting better at acting sober when he was smashed?
"Well no matter, I have some friends I'd like you to meet." America perked up at that, "Really, who?" he asked eagerly and England smiled, "Mint this is America, America this is Mint."
America never saw this "Mint" person.
England must have hit his head or something.
The child frowned, "England, who are you pointing at?"
Now his caretaker looked confused, "America, can't you see her?" The little colony was quickly growing frustrated, "See who England? There's no one there!"
.:.:.:.:.:.
"I would have been content with just believing he was crazy, but then Canada came to live with us." America heaved a solemn sigh, "He could see England's fairies, but I couldn't. England was so ecstatic about having someone to share his illusions with…I was forgotten." Kuminjuro tilted his head, smelling the sadness and distress waft off of America. He butted the hand that had stilled, both as a sign of comfort and in hopes he would continue doting on him. His effort paid off as the young nation scratched the soft ears of the cub, even if America wasn't really all there during the affection.
"Who am I kidding?" The nation said after a time, "England was always part of a world beyond my reach." America's lips tilted upward in a smile too bittersweet for his normal self. "I'm a fool, Kuminjuro." The bear tilted his head again as the other continued, "Because despite everything... I'm still going to try and reach him."
