"Don't you know what a kiss is?"
"I shall know when you give it to me."
-Peter Pan and Wendy (Peter Pan)
Scarlett bit her lip as Fred let out a low whistle and George sighed. They were standing just inside the doorway of Weasley's Wizard Wheezes, staring at the mess.
The shop had been trashed, just like Fred and George had thought it would be. Displays were lying on the ground, products littered the floor, the window was broken, and everything looked dusty.
The three of them began aimlessly walking around the shop, looking at all the damage. Scarlett waved her wand and repaired the window as she walked by it, the pieces of broken glass flying off the floor and fitting into their proper places.
"It's nothing too serious," George said, coming out of the back room as he finished checking it. "It's mostly just a mess, but nothing's stolen, thankfully. Our absence was just taken advantage of and the shop suffered, like most of the other shops here suffered as well."
"All the money in the cash register's gone," Fred said as George and Scarlett joined him towards the back of the shop at the register. He peered into the drawer and let out a tiny breath of laughter. "They left five Sickles," he said, reaching in and scooping them out. "If I knew who actually took the money, I'd give them my eternal gratitude." He jingled the coins in his hand before passing them to Scarlett. "Here," he said with a tiny smile.
"Why are you giving them to me?" she asked, wrinkling her nose in confusion.
"I believe we had a bet going on," Fred replied, "but it's over now. You won." He shrugged and smiled wider. "You were right. I did change my mind about wanting to stay a little boy forever."
"Yeah?" Scarlett asked. "What made you change your mind?"
"Well, I ended up finding something that I'd miss out on if I never grew up and now that I've experienced it, I can't imagine my life without it."
"What is it?" Scarlett asked, looking up at him expectantly. She had an inkling of what he was going to say, and she hoped she was right.
Fred took a deep breath and let it out as he shrugged again and smiled. "Being with you," he said. "Falling in love with you. Getting to marry you. You were right when you said dating was a step up from friendship. I mean, it is friendship because you're still my best friend next to George, but it's so much more…and now that I know what else is out there, I don't want to go back. Loving you is so worth being a grown up for."
Scarlett smiled and handed the five Sickles back to Fred. "When you start breeding pygmy puffs again and they're in stock, I want one. Here's my money in advance."
Fred chuckled and emptied the coins back into the register before fixing the broken drawer with his wand and closing it. "You got it."
Scarlett grinned and took his hand. "Come on, let's get this place back in order."
Over the course of the next few hours, Scarlett had never been more grateful for magic. Cleaning the shop up the Muggle way would have taken forever, but with magic, it went by so much faster and the shop was back to normal in no time. There were just some products that needed restocking and others that needed to be remade completely from scratch, but other than that, everything was perfect.
When they were done with the repairs, Fred, George and Scarlett made their way up to the flat, which had miraculously been left untouched.
"I am so exhausted," George complained, heading straight for his room as he began pulling off his tie.
Fred and Scarlett grinned as they watched him disappear into his room. Once the door was shut, Fred turned to Scarlett. "Come on, I have to give you your gift now." He took her hand and began leading her to his bedroom.
"Fred, you really didn't have to get me anything," Scarlett said as they walked into the room. Scarlett noticed his stuff had been sent back from Muriel's and was lying on the bed. Even Binky was there, sleeping on the nightstand as usual.
"That's the thing, though," Fred answered as Scarlett picked Binky up and kissed his tiny head before setting him down again. "I did have to get you a gift. And technically, I didn't actually get it for you. I made it."
"You made me something, too?" Scarlett asked, holding up her wrist. "Erica already made me this bracelet. You people are getting very crafty, apparently."
Fred laughed and opened one of his desk drawers, pulling out a box and handing it to her. "Happy birthday," he whispered.
Scarlett smiled and took the box from him. She pulled the ribbon off and then the lid. When she saw what was inside, she had to grin wider.
"Fred," she giggled, pulling the necklace out. It was a silver necklace, with a shiny silver thimble attached to it.
"I raided mum's sewing kit for the thimble and I shrunk it a bit and charmed it to be a little shinier. Then, I got the chain from Ginny and put the thimble on it. I thought you'd like it and it would remind you of Peter Pan. You know, since Wendy gave one to Peter and told him it was a kiss because he didn't actually know what kisses were."
"I know, I remember. That's one of my favorite parts of the story, actually. I think it's sweet." She looked up at him. "So, since you gave me a kiss," she said slowly, holding up the thimble, "does that mean I can give you a thimble?"
"I would love a thimble," Fred laughed, leaning forward and gently kissing her, sliding a hand to the back of her neck and pulling her as close to him as he could.
Finally, Scarlett pulled away and looked down at the necklace, admiring it with a smile. "I love this, Fred. So much."
"I'm glad," he said. "I didn't know if you'd really want to wear it since you've been wearing Justin's locket again lately…." He rubbed the back of his neck and looked at her a bit sheepishly.
Scarlett chewed her lip in thought for a second before she handed the thimble necklace to Fred. "Hold this for a moment." She reached up and unclasped the locket from around her neck. She took the locket off of the chain before taking the thimble necklace back from Fred. She slipped the locket onto that chain and held it up. "Good?" she asked, smiling widely.
"Perfect," Fred replied.
Scarlett handed the necklace to him before turning around and lifting her hair. Fred reached around and positioned the chain around her neck before clasping it. Scarlett dropped her hair and turned, looking down at the piece of jewelry and touching it affectionately. She didn't even care that the locket was gold and the rest of the necklace was silver. She just loved that she would get to have reminders of both Fred and Justin with her at all times. She had also put pictures of her parents inside the locket, so now she had reminders of them with her as well and the thought couldn't have made her happier.
Fred yawned just then and stretched his arms above his head. "Now it's time for me to change out of these uncomfortable fancy clothes and put on something else," he said, lowering his arms and crossing to his dresser. "What about you? Want something to change into?"
"No, I should get going soon anyway," Scarlett said, sitting on the edge of the bed as she watched Fred loosen his tie and pull it off before pulling off his shirt. Scarlett bit her lip as she noticed the scar on his side. She hadn't even seen it yet considering the last time she had seen the injured area, it had been covered in blood. Just looking at it upset her a bit, though. It reminded her of what Scabior had done and also the fact that she had been so close to losing Fred because of that injury.
"Hey, what's wrong?" Fred asked.
Scarlett looked up to see him staring at her, concern etched on his face as he stood with a t-shirt in his hands, halfway to raising it up to throw it over his head.
"It's nothing," Scarlett said. "It's just…your scar." She pointed and shrugged slightly.
Fred smiled. "I love it, actually. It's cool. Although, I sort of wish it was in an awesome shape like Harry's lightning bolt, but you can't have it all I guess."
"It looks like the Cheshire cat's smile," Scarlett said, turning her head to the side. "You know, from Alice in Wonderland."
"Ah," Fred grinned. "Brilliant. Even better than a lightning bolt."
Scarlett sighed. "I don't know, Fred, I just….I don't like looking at it. It reminds me that I almost lost you yesterday. Twice. It reminds me that Scabior could have taken yet another person away from me if I hadn't had that potion in my pocket."
Fred crouched in front of her and reached up, cupping her cheek in his hand and gently caressing her cheekbone with his thumb. "But you did have it," he whispered. "The potion healed me and left this scar, so it should be a reminder of how you healed me and how you're the reason I'm here right now. Without you, I would be dead."
Scarlett swallowed and nodded as she leaned into Fred's touch and sighed. He stood up and leaned forward to kiss her forehead as Scarlett absentmindedly reached out and traced her fingers over the thin, curved scar.
"I love you," she whispered, looking up at him as tears welled up in her eyes. She couldn't explain why she was emotional all of a sudden, but she also couldn't help it. It was probably because it had been an overwhelming and emotional few days. Actually, it had been an overwhelming an emotional few months.
Fred smiled and finished putting his shirt on before leaning down and kissing her again, long and slow this time. His hands were resting on the bed on either side of Scarlett's legs and she brought her hands up to his neck as she deepened the kiss. She could feel Fred's pulse quickening and she smiled, her tears drying on her eyelashes, completely forgotten about.
She fell back onto the bed as Fred crawled on top of her without breaking the kiss. "Maybe I shouldn't have bothered putting a shirt on," he muttered as he peppered kisses all along her collarbone. He was extra careful to gently kiss the circular burn mark that still remained from Greyback's wand.
Scarlett giggled and was just about to answer when there was a knock on the door.
"Fred, we have absolutely no food, so I think we should head over to the Burrow," George's voice said. "Mum mentioned that Bill, Fleur, Sirius, Harry and Hermione would be going over after the funerals and staying for dinner. Percy's going too, apparently."
Fred groaned quietly and pressed his forehead into Scarlett's shoulder as she giggled and ran her hands through his hair. "Yeah, sure," he replied. "That sounds good."
"Okay, I'll meet you downstairs so we can go. Scarlett, you're welcome to come as well. And bring Erica."
"Okay, George, thank you," Scarlett said, smiling.
Fred pulled back and hovered above her on all fours. "I don't believe him," he laughed, grinning down at her. "Sometimes his timing is as impeccable as Ron's."
"I can see that," Scarlett laughed.
Fred leaned down and pressed a quick kiss to her lips before pulling back slightly, grinning, and kissing her once more. "So, you're going to go home, change, get Erica and then meet us at the Burrow?"
Scarlett nodded. "That's the plan."
"Excellent," Fred said, climbing off the bed to let Scarlett up. He picked his wand up off the desk and pocketed it. "So, I'll see you there?"
She nodded. "See you there."
Dinner that night was one of the most amazing dinners Scarlett had ever had. Not only did it taste terrific (Scarlett had come to expect nothing less from Mrs. Weasley), but the atmosphere was different from the dinners Scarlett had eaten in the past year or so. Voldemort was gone and the war was over. Everyone was relaxed and happier now. Granted, there were still a lot of people to grieve for, such as Lupin and Tonks, but the war was over and it was something worth celebrating.
Fred had put his wedding ring on again and Scarlett found herself staring at it multiple times throughout the night. Something about looking at it thrilled her in a way. It had kind of felt as if she and Fred hadn't had time to enjoy being married. They had tied the knot pretty informally in Percy's living room. Then, they had fought and didn't speak to each other for a few weeks. Then, there had been a battle. It had been easy for it to slip Scarlett's mind that she was actually married. Every time she saw Fred's wedding ring, she was reminded that he was officially hers. It was also strange how a few years ago, she hadn't wanted this in the least, and now she felt thrilling butterflies every time she thought about it. She also decided that maybe it was a good thing that she had the vow renewal ceremony to look forward to and that it was going to be as similar to a first-time wedding as possible. Maybe it would help things seem more real.
Mrs. Weasley also insisted on having Scarlett's birthday party, even though Scarlett tried multiple times to turn her down. It was held at the Burrow in the middle of May. Mrs. Weasley overdid herself with the cooking. Erica and Ginny baked a cake. Fred and George tried to bake one of their own, but burnt it, momentarily filling the Burrow with dark smoke and a foul smell. Mrs. Weasley chased them out of the kitchen with a spoon while Scarlett practically fell to the ground laughing. Her laughter had made Fred's cheeks turn red with embarrassment for a split second before he recovered and chased her around the house until he managed to catch her and throw her over his shoulder.
The vow renewal ceremony was set for the beginning of July. Mrs. Weasley insisted she could have things done in time and Erica insisted she could have the dresses finished by then as well. Scarlett found herself enjoying planning everything with Mrs. Weasley. She liked picking out flowers and color schemes and discussing what kind of food she wanted. Mrs. Weasley was amazing, kind and patient and Scarlett loved her for doing everything she was doing. But at the same time, she wished her own mother had been around to plan it with her. She wished her own mother was around to simply see the ceremony.
One night, in the first week of June, Scarlett found herself kicked out of her flat so that Erica could spread out and start actually making her wedding dress.
"I only have a month to finish this," Erica had said, her words tumbling from her mouth at high speed, "and I need to spread out. It's also hard to work on things when you actually live here with me, so you need to leave. And I only have one bridesmaid dress done, so get out and don't come back until tomorrow night. That way, I can have a full twenty four hours to work on this. We're going to do this every weekend until the wedding as well, so be prepared. Ginny will be here in ten minutes to help me, so hopefully we'll be able to get a lot done, now shoo."
Scarlett hadn't even bothered to argue with her best friend. She had just packed a bag with some things and gone to Fred and George's flat. When she got there, she found out that George had gone out on a Zonko's trip with Lee, leaving Fred and Scarlett in the flat alone.
"You didn't want to go with them?" Scarlett asked, dropping her bag onto the couch.
Fred shrugged. "Nah, I can go to Zonko's anytime. Tonight, I decided to take the opportunity of having the flat to ourselves to plan a date night for the two of us."
"Ah," Scarlett said with a smile as Fred wound his arms around her waist. "That was sweet of you. Did you cook?"
"No, actually," Fred said, "but I picked up something for us to eat that's ten times better than my cooking."
"Yeah? Well, I'd like to see it, then," Scarlett said.
Fred let go of her and picked up her hand, leading her to the kitchen. When Scarlett entered the room, her mouth fell open in surprise. The kitchen table was set, complete with a tablecloth and two candles, and, on the counter, was a line of Chinese food containers.
"I know you used to go out for Chinese food with your dad, but…." Fred shrugged. "I know you like it, so I thought it would be fun."
"This is amazing," Scarlett said, "and it smells delicious."
"Is it too late for me to take credit for the cooking?" Fred asked with a grin.
Scarlett looked at him and smiled. "Who cooked doesn't matter. I just think it's great that you planned all of this."
"It's nothing too fancy," Fred shrugged as his ears turned red. "It was pretty simple, really."
"Exactly, and that's why I love it." Scarlett leaned up and kissed Fred's cheek before making a beeline for the counter. "Seriously, this smells so good! It's been ages since I ate this kind of food and I forgot how wonderful it smells."
Fred laughed and crossed the room to the fridge. "Firewhiskey okay?" he asked, pulling out two.
"Perfect," Scarlett answered.
They piled food onto their plates and sat down at the table.
"I'm glad to see you eating properly again," Fred said, smiling at her as he opened his firewhiskey and took a sip.
Scarlett looked down and blushed as she slowly twirled her fork in her fingers. "I know. It was a process, but I'm doing so much better now, thanks to you."
Fred smiled and reached across the table to take her hand.
"I just…I've been thinking of my mother a lot lately, with all of these plans for the wedding. I just wish she could have been here to help. She would've loved it."
"She would've," Fred whispered, brushing his thumb across the back of Scarlett's hand.
"And my dad, too," Scarlett added. "He would've been happy."
"How do you think he would've initially reacted to the vow?" Fred asked. "Would he have been angry? You know, that his little girl went and vowed to marry some guy when she was only nine years old?"
Scarlett smiled. "You were never just some guy, Fred. I knew you very well back then and I know you just as well, if not more, right now. And my dad honestly would've loved you. Maybe he would've been kind of upset about the situation, but he would've been okay with you being the person I made the vow with."
Fred nodded. "Is it weird if I tell you I miss him sometimes?"
Scarlett looked up in surprise. She hadn't expected Fred to say that. He hadn't known her dad for all that long and he had died a long time ago. "You do?"
"Yeah, I mean, I remember him pretty well. He was a great guy. He was funny and he never told my mum when he caught me and George in the middle of a prank. He was smart and he meant the world to you and your mother. I knew you were upset about losing him back then, but I didn't expect anything to change. But they did. And in the past few years, I've seen just how you were—and still are—affected by his death. I miss him because he was an amazing person, but also because him being gone made you sad. You would do anything to bring him back and I know that. I've told you before that I wish I could undo the accident, and I really would if I could. I wish I could bring him and your mother back for you. I'd even bring Justin back if I could."
Scarlett stared at him for a moment, unsure of what to say. "That's sweet, Fred," she finally whispered. "I appreciate that. I really do."
"I just want you to be happy," Fred told her.
"I am happy," Scarlett answered. "I mean, of course losing my parents and Justin has made me sad. Really sad. I'm not going to deny it. But I'm healing and you played a huge part in that. I'm going to have days and moments when I miss them and think about them a lot, but I am happy. You've done a lot, but you can't do it all. Just the fact that you want to bring them back for me is sweet and it means a lot. I promise."
Fred smiled. "I'm glad."
Scarlett smiled slightly and inhaled through her nose before exhaling and smiling a bit wider. "But let's not talk about my parents right now. I don't want to end up crying tonight."
"Got it," Fred agreed.
"So, are you nervous at all?" Scarlett asked as they ate. "About the ceremony, I mean."
"A little bit," Fred answered, leaning back in his chair and taking a long sip from his firewhiskey. "You?"
Scarlett nodded. "I'm plenty nervous. I'm nervous something will go wrong. I'm nervous that I'll trip or it'll downpour, or…." She sighed. "But it doesn't matter, really, if any of those things happen. I'm married to you and we're renewing our vows and we don't have to worry about fulfilling an Unbreakable Vow anymore. We're doing this just for us because we want to and I'm mostly very excited."
Fred smiled and stood up to clear the dishes. He deposited them in the sink and grabbed two fortune cookies off the counter before returning to the table. He handed one of the cookies to Scarlett before sitting back down again.
Scarlett turned the cookie over and over in her hand, smiling fondly at it as she remembered her dad. She wondered if he had known how much she had always cherished their little experiment. He probably had, and she liked to think so.
"Why don't you open your cookie first?" Fred suggested. "Maybe this one will be the one that'll come true."
Scarlett glanced up at him. "I don't know, Fred, they can sometimes be vague."
"It doesn't matter," Fred said. "It's still fun to wonder, isn't it?"
Scarlett grinned and unwrapped the cookie. She bit her lip and counted to three in her head before cracking the cookie open and depositing the two halves on the table as she pulled out her fortune. Her forehead crinkled in confusion as she read the slip of paper out loud.
"Scarlett, will you marry me? Fred, what is th—." She looked up and gasped when she saw Fred on one knee by the side of the table, holding a ring box in his hand. He kept his eyes locked on hers as he pulled it open to reveal a glittering engagement ring.
"I've been thinking a lot lately," he began, never breaking eye contact with her, "and I feel terribly that you never got a proper engagement. We kind of got thrown into this and while I'm thrilled at how it turned out, the fact that I never got to properly propose has been nagging at me for quite some time. You deserve to be properly proposed to, Scarlett. You deserve love and respect and any guy would be lucky to be in my place right now. I may have taken that for granted, even as a nine year old. I feel as if I almost claimed you as mine and that's not what you deserve. Even though we made this vow together, I technically didn't ask you what you wanted. I didn't give you a choice. And even though you still don't exactly have a choice—even though everything legal says you're my wife… I wanted to make sure that in some way, I did this right. That I did everything I was supposed to do, even if it was out of order. I wanted nothing more than to get down on one knee and ask you—properly ask you—if you would marry me."
Scarlett stared at him for a moment, at a complete loss for words. Tears were forming in her eyes and after a second they were falling down her cheeks. So much for not crying tonight. She buried her face in her hands and took in a deep breath before looking up into Fred's pleading, anxious blue eyes. "Yes," she said, her voice cracking slightly. She laughed and stood up, pulling Fred to his feet as she did so. "The answer always has been and always will be yes," she whispered, smiling softly.
Fred grinned and grabbed her in a tight hug, spinning her around once before setting her down, kissing her and pulling the ring from the box. Scarlett held out her hand and he slipped the ring onto her finger. Scarlett stared at it for a moment, twisting her hand back and forth so that it caught the light from the candles. Then, just like that, she was crying again.
"What's wrong?" Fred asked, slightly alarmed.
"I am so lucky, Fred," she said, looking up at him and swallowing back her tears. "You said you took what we had for granted, and well, maybe I did, too. Especially back at Muriel's when I kept trying to push you away. I knew how much you cared, but I was so consumed with grief and with isolating myself that I couldn't see how lucky I was to have you care so much." She smiled up at him. "You mean the world to me," she whispered, "You always have and you always will."
Fred reached out and brushed her hair from her face before leaning in to kiss her. Scarlett trailed her fingertips down the side of his neck, stopping when she felt his pulse. She felt it speed up as Fred deepened the kiss and picked her up to place her on the counter, but it still drummed out a steady rhythm underneath her fingers.
"I love you," Fred murmured against her neck as he pressed his lips to the skin there.
Scarlett smiled and raked her fingers through his hair as he trailed kisses upwards until he had reached her jaw. "I love you, too," she whispered.
Fred pulled back slightly and looked at her as a smile spread across his face. "I never get tired of hearing that."
Scarlett laughed and swatted his shoulder before leaning up and kissing him once again. After a moment, Fred lifted her from the counter and she wrapped her legs around his waist as he carried her to his room. They both fell onto the bed as Binky began squeaking excitedly at their arrival.
"Close your eyes, Binks," Fred said, smiling and reaching over to the nightstand. He turned Binky around so that he was facing the other way, but Binky let out a squeak of annoyance and turned back around.
"He won't be so stubborn in a minute," Fred grinned.
Scarlett laughed and reached up, sliding her hand around to the back of Fred's neck and pulling him down for another kiss.
A/N: So the next chapter will be the vow renewal ceremony/wedding. And then the chapter after that will be the last one. And then I'll post a list of all the Disney references I used as a separate chapter probably right after I post the last real chapter.
Thanks for reading!
