McKenzie woke up a little after 1 a.m. and didn't see Jake in the bed. She checked her cell phone and seen a text from Josh a few hours ago telling her that Jake was at his house and he was fine.
She sighed and lay back down. She didn't want to fight with him, hell he was leaving in less than 3 days. She just didn't want a repeat of a few years ago. Drugs had nearly destroyed them forever. She laid awake for 15 minutes before falling asleep.
She woke back up when she heard the garage door opening from down below. A few minutes later, he walked into the bedroom and headed to the bathroom. He turned on the light and seen Mac awake.
"Hey."
"Hey." She replied back.
"I got this at home drug test." He told her holding up a plastic bag. "I wanted to prove to you that I haven't done anything."
She threw the covers back, careful to not wake up Aubree. She walked to the bathroom.
"Now I'm going to take this." He told her.
She walked in with him and a few minutes later, the test came back. He was clear of everything.
"I told you." He said. "I know what's more important to me now, and that you and Aubree."
"I'm so sorry, Jake." She said with her head down.
She was so ashamed.
"Hey, it's ok." He said making her look at him. "I'm sorry for the things I said earlier…you know about Zach."
"I know and it's ok." She said. "We're always apologizing to each other."
"Mac, everyone fights." He told her wrapping her in his arms. "If we didn't, we wouldn't love and care about each other."
She sighed in his chest.
"Besides I don't blame you for jumping to conclusions." He said. "I'm an ex addict. I'll always be that. When you see Will, you couldn't help but think that I was doing it again."
"Yeah." She agreed. "I just know that Will is not someone you should hang around."
"He offered." Jake confessed.
"What?" She asked pulling away to look at him.
"I said no." He continued. "My family's more important, my job's more important."
"I'm so proud of you, Harris."
He smiled his big silly smile.
"I'm going to shower and I want to crash."
She nodded. She left him in the bathroom and climbed back in bed. She moved her daughter over a little and then heard the shower cut on.
She felt bad for jumping through conclusions and for accusing him of relapsing. He climbed into bed beside her a few minutes later. He wrapped his arms around his fiancée.
"I love you, McKenzie."
"I love you too, Jake."
He kissed her hair and they went to bed. The next morning, McKenzie got ready to go to the hospital for her 12 hour shift. She was a little tired for the drama the night before.
"Bree and I are going to go up to see my grandpa." Jake told her.
"Ok."
3 DAYS LATER
McKenzie and Aubree drove Jake to the airport. He was flying up to Dutch for the opilio season. The last two days, they had set a wedding date.
Jake kissed his daughter and handed her to Mac.
"I love you, peanut." He told his daughter and then looked at his fiancée. "Love you too, mama peanut."
"We love you too, daddy peanut."
Jake kissed them again before going to his terminal. McKenzie sighed as they walked back to her vehicle. She was fixing to endure another fishing trip and the weeks to months that she would go without seeing Jake.
"Daddy?" The toddler asked as she buckled her in her car seat.
"Daddy's going to work." She told her. "He'll be back before you know it."
A FEW DAYS LATER
McKenzie and Aubree met up with Mary and Missy for lunch. When they got there, she already seen both her mother and Jake's mother there. She walked to the table and put Aubree in the high chair.
"Hi, pumpkin." Mary smiled at the little girl.
"Hey, honey." Missy said kissing her daughter's cheek.
"Hey." She smiled.
"So, what's the important news you have to share with us?" Missy asked.
"You're pregnant?" Mary asked excitedly.
"No." McKenzie giggled. "Jake and I actually set a date."
"That's wonderful." Missy said.
Mary smiled.
"I've looked through tons of bridal magazines and talking with Chelsea and Amber." She told them. "The date is July 14th."
Mary got out her date book and wrote it down.
"I've already picked out colors too." McKenzie smiled. "Dark purple, Gold and Lavender."
"We have tons of planning to do." Mary said going to work. "We have 6 months."
McKenzie didn't know who was more excited, her or Mary.
"Who are you planning to have other than Amber and Chelsea as bridesmaids?"
"I've been hanging out with Jessica again." McKenzie told her. "So, her, and I was wanting to ask Sandra."
"She'd love to." Missy smiled.
Missy wanted Jim's kids and her kids to be closer as step siblings.
"Jake is gonna have Josh, Matt, Evan and Jake Anderson."
Mary was continuing to write everything down.
"Aubree and Sandra's girls, Sarah and Gracie can be flower girls." Missy said. "Sandra's son, Gavin can be the ring bearer."
McKenzie texted Sandra and asked if she would be one of her bridesmaids and if her kids could be flower girls and the ring bearer. Sandra didn't waste any time texting back and replying of course!
