Alice woke up to a familiar feeling.
Heat.
It curled around her stomach like an uncomfortable swirl that made her draw closer to Jasper in search of cooler temperatures, she had been feeling those strange flares of heat for over a month now, it was annoying. She drapped her arm over his naked waist before burying her face against his chest.
He was still asleep, she could tell by how relaxed his body felt, she threw a look over his shoulder, the clock on the nightstand marked 11:09, it was way later than they usually woke up, being in a house surrounded by poisonous vampires who had no idea about their true nature called for a lot of safety precautions.
One of them was waking up at 6:00 sharp, 5 if it was a school day, and still, she felt exceptionally tired, so what if they stayed longer in their room? Emmett and Rosalie would spend days in their room and no one would bat an eye.
Jasper was generally a light sleeper, but he could sleep for days without so much as twitching if she didn't wake him, she sighed before laying back down, snuggling closer to him, she felt his arms tighten around her for a moment before he was relaxing once again.
A sudden light knock from the door made her scrunch up her nose in distaste, a low growl catching at the back of her throat, this before biting her tongue, that was another thing from the ongoing list of oddities she had been noticing this past month.
Her temper had been all over the place for over a week now, the smallest of things annoyed her; someone was talking too much, not enough, someone wasn't wearing the right colors together, Jacob was stinking all over the place, Jasper wasn't paying her attention, some human food Esme was cooking for Renesmee smelt too nauseating to stand, Jasper was paying her way too much attention, he didn't touch her, he touched her, he didn't look at her when she stepped into a room, he wouldn't stop looking at her.
She even got into an argument with Jasper last night, all because he had come back reeking like those mutts after he let Emmett talk him into racing with some of the wolves across the forest, a race that ended up in a harmless fight.
Of course the argument hadn't lasted long considering how her blinding rage had turned into absolute desolation out of nowhere.
And then she had jumped him.
There were claw marks all over the walls and ceiling, the mattress was on the floor after the bed had collapsed, the whole room was a mess, but she couldn't care less about it.
-What?- Alice questioned, trying to keep the annoyance off her voice, she didn't want anyone bothering her right now, she was perfectly happy here.
-Did Jasper take the fifth draft for the Tri-Chess?- Emmett's voice came from the other side of the door, Alice frowned.
-I don't know, let me check.- She muttered before wiggling out of Jasper's embrace with not much eagerness. She wanted to go back to sleep, but she knew Emmett would have no qualms whatsoever over barging into the room if she ignored him, the last thing she needed was him seeing the claw marks all over the walls and ceiling.
Claw marks no human fingernails would ever do, not even with vampire strength.
She carefully left the bed, careful to not make it creak or jostle, once she was up she went over to the drawer where she knew Jasper usually kept anything he borrowed, a funny feeling swirled around her stomach, it wasn't the heat she had grown so familiar with, this one was more… uncomfortable.
It took a moment for it to pass.
-Alice?
-Give me a moment.- She snapped, couldn't he ever be a bit more patient?
-Alright, alright, no need to bite my head off. Why can't he get it then? He's the one who borrowed it anyways.- Emmett's amused voice made her seethe.
-He's taking a shower.- She stated dryly before opening the drawer.
-Sure.- Emmett's voice let her know he believed nothing of what she just said. She ignored him, rummaging through the drawer, when she found the instructions she grabbed them, closing the drawer back up before slipping the papers under the door.
-There, now go away. You better be dying if you knock that door again.- She said before going back to bed, she climbed on it, snuggling back with Jasper and throwing the quilt over them, they didn't feel cold but she liked the feeling of the soft quilt over her bare skin.
She heard Emmett mutter something but she ignored him, world becoming a far away blur as sleep took hold of her once again.
~
-Man, one would think she would be in a better mood after spending the whole night breaking stuff all over the place.- Emmett complained as he made his way down the stairs, but even if he said that he was seriously starting to worry, Alice was all sunshine and rainbows one moment, you know, her usual self, and then she would be screaming her lungs out at Edward for playing the piano too loud, how did one even play a piano too loud?
But last night had been the weirdest one so far, she had been screaming at Jasper one moment, which mind you, Emmett nor anyone for that matter had ever heard her do, and then she had abruptly shut up before starting to cry, even if they had been in their room Emmett could have sworn he had felt Jasper's panic over the unexpected switch in her mood.
Emmett almost pitied him.
Almost.
Because her crying hadn't lasted long, they had made up rather quickly, they had spent the whole night making up and making sure the entire world knew, they had quietened down with the destruction around sunrise, and ever since then there had been nothing but such deadly silence from their room it was straight up bizarre.
Emmett had gone with the excuse of wanting the draft back, but he had actually wanted to make sure Jasper was still alive or even in the house at all.
Alice was the one who spoke, and she sounded like she was still in a bad mood, wonderful. She said Jasper was in the shower but he hadn't heard a shower at all, he had been tempted to go in and check that his brother wasn't dead, but he put the logic in use, Alice would never actually kill Jasper.
I mean, she was simping over that guy just as much as Jasper was simping over her, still, Alice in a bad mood was a foreign concept to him, and he didn't think he liked it, she was terrifying like that.
He wondered if that's how she got Jasper to be such a simp over her. A walking sunshine who could become a living nightmare when pissed off.
-Everyone's got bad days.- Esme said, her attention settled on the blue prints she had spread over the coffee table, she was sitting on the ground, Carlisle sat on the couch behind her working on some paperwork he had brought from the office.
-She isn't been having "bad days", she's been having a bad week. - Rosalie stated dryly from where she was laying on the ground on her stomach, a book infront of her, even she was starting to get seriously annoyed with Alice's attitude.
She acted as if Jasper going off to have some fun was the worst crime in the world, if it wasn't for Emmett she would have gone upstairs last night to give her a piece of her mind, she had been absolutely irrational over getting mad with Jasper for something so small.
So what if he and Emmett got into a fight with Paul and Seth? While not smart it was a harmless thing. He could do whatever he wanted to spend the time, but she had still acted as if that had been a huge transgression of some kind, Christ, it wasn't as if he had been cheating on her or feeding off of some random hiker.
Rosalie hadn't even thought Alice could have it in her to shout like that to Jasper of all people. Everyone had heard her when she got mad at him after he got bitten during the fight with Victoria's army, there had also been the occasional argument here and there in the past, mostly because Jasper had no regard whatsoever over his own safety if it meant protecting Alice.
But none of those fights had ever been so irrational and loud as the one from last night, Jasper himself had sounded like he had no idea where her anger was coming from nor the reason for her to be so royally pissed in the first place.
Even now Rosalie couldn't think of one reason for Alice to react so… irrational, so explosive, even Carlisle and Esme who never stick their noses into couple fights had looked like they had been close to going upstairs and breaking the fight off.
Because it had seriously sounded as if Alice was seconds away from pouncing at Jasper, and not in the good way.
But she hadn't.
-Cut her some slack, we haven't had the greatest of weeks.- Edward felt the need to defend, his fingers coming to a halt over the piano's keyboard.
It hadn't even been that long since their near fight with the Volturi, and considering Alice's vision if the fight had ensued… She was entitled to still be stressed and anxious, and he could somehow understand her hysteria over Jasper being out of her sight. She had seen him die for God's sake.
-Exactly, we, you don't see anyone else arguing over everything, do you?- Rosalie told as a statement of fact, Edward's silence made her smirk, he knew she was right, Alice was the only one acting so… like that.
And the silence upstairs…
It was creepy.
~
Alice woke up again around 3 and while she would have liked to keep on sleeping she knew she couldn't.
Thus.
She took a long shower and an even longer bath, hoping for that to be enough to wake her, this before getting herself into fresh clothes. She took it to fix the bedroom as much as she could before waking Jasper up.
He wasn't that pleased about it, he never was pleased about being woken up, she found his annoyed scowl adorable.
-It's past 3 love, you know sleeping for too long is not a good idea.- She whispered into his ear, low enough for only him to hear, he turned his head to look at her over his shoulder and she took the opportunity to give him a peck.
-Are you alright?- He questioned with a frown, she gave him her best smile.
-Of course, why wouldn't I be?
-You smell funny.- He whispered before turning around completely and sitting up.
-What do you mean? I took a shower and a bath.- She told him as a statement of fact, she would forever find annoying having to sit in a bathtub to soak in for hours, make sure the essential oils would cover her scent completely, but she also knew it had to be done, the Cullens could never know what she was, what they were.
Because the less they knew the safer would they be, they didn't knew how to hide their minds from Aro's gift like she did, if they knew and Aro found out…
She didn't even want to think about it.
The Volturi wouldn't hesitate to strike if the knowledge of not one but two black bloods being alive was to reach them.
Meanwhile, Jasper didn't answer, instead, he leaned forward, his nose touching her neck as he took in a deep breath, he didn't knew what it was, but something about her scent felt off.
Alice couldn't help but giggle at the ticklish feeling, gently pushing him back.
-I can still smell you.- Jasper stated lowly, still frowning, he stared straight into her eyes, something was off, but what? Last night had clearly let him know that something was definitely amiss with his wife, that overwhelming rage in her emotions, the way her eyes had grown so exceptionally dark, the black veins sprouting across her face.
And then just like a whiplash the rage had turned into sorrow, grief, guilt, desolation, and then such obliterating lust, desire, it had made him dizzy, he had never felt such unexpected and rapid switch in someone's emotions, irrational, illogical, wrong.
-I'm fine. - Alice assured, this before smirking and leaning forward to press her lips against his neck.- Though I do admit I might be feeling a bit peckish.- She bit his neck, not breaking skin, just hard enough to make a point of what she meant.
She wanted his blood.
It wasn't as rejuvenating and useful as venom but with their current situation neither of them could afford to be picky.
Plus.
She did had to admit she had grown quite fond of his blood.
-Alright then, just lemme take a shower and we'll be on our way.- Jasper told, giving her a peck before climbing off the bed, his bare back to her showing her the most recent marks across his skin, she had barely kept herself from drawing blood last night, her claws digging into his skin.
But she needed to be careful, they both needed to be careful, one drop of blood would be enough to alert, maybe not the entire family, but certainly Carlisle.
Carlisle had been around black bloods in Volterra, he knew more about them than Alice herself did, and she was one herself, he would recognize the stench in a flash.
The others might not recognize the scent, yes, but a drop would be enough to make their instincts start blaring all over the place, screaming at them to run as fast as possible, to the furthest corner on Earth.
Why?
Because a black blood was an apex predator.
One bigger than poisonous vampires themselves.
And their instincts could tell when said predator was near.
It was another reason Alice didn't want them to know.
She didn't want them to become afraid.
She had never been able to get a precise vision of what would happen if she and Jasper told them the truth, their reactions were forever changing.
Alice sighed before dropping herself back on the bed, wood creaking beneath the mattress upon impact, she rolled on her back and her hands came to rest on her stomach, she frowned at the sudden flare of heat around her stomach, that was new, unless the swirl was starting to become worse.
She must have dozed off because next thing she knows Jasper is on top of her, already dressed, and peppering her face with kisses as a familiar warmness tickles her skin, his affection.
-We should go now.- He told as he deposited one last kiss on her jaw before pulling back and climbing off the bed.
Alice nodded, shifting on the bed before sitting up and taking his hand, they both left the room, downstairs, their apparition got them the entire room's attention.
-Oh my God you are alive!- Emmett exclaimed dramatically, this before leaving his spot on the ground where he had been playing Scrabble with Rosalie, and jumping at Jasper.
Or at least he tried to because Jasper side-stepped, easily dodging Emmett's incoming hug.
Jasper wasn't a particular fan of physical contact, while at first his avoidance of it had been because he didn't trust the Cullen, nowdays it was just to prevent them from sensing anything off, he knew the Cullen still thought it was because of his past, and they respected his space.
Emmett did too, but he sometimes got a bit too excited.
Alice did a great job at hiding her nature to a point where he sometimes forgot she wasn't a poisonous vampire, all so she could cling to people to her hearts content.
-Of course 'm alive, why wouldn't I be?
-Dude, you were like, seriously quiet.- Emmett said, throwing Alice a look, Jasper felt her grip on his hand tighten, impatience flickering in her emotions, he sent calm her way.
-Well, as you can see, 'm not dead. Now if you excuse us, I would very much like to go huntin', with my wife, alone.- He made a point to put emphasis on the last word when he saw Emmett open his mouth.
It was general knowledge that he and Alice fed more than average, so them wanting to go hunting even though the whole family had gone hunting yesterday was no surprise.
Most of those hunting trips weren't for hunting though.
They just couldn't feed off of each other in the house, that could bring a lot of unwanted scenarios.
Emmett pouted but Jasper ignored him, pulling Alice with him as he began walking.
They walked for a while, getting as far away from the house as possible.
Jasper brought them to their usual spot near the river, once there, he sat down on a boulder before pulling Alice down with him and onto his lap, her arms wrapping around shoulders.
-Go on now.- He assured, nuzzling her cheek, his hands coming to rest on her waist.
Alice gave him a peck before leaning forward, she tugged at his shirt to reveal his shoulder before bending down, and after giving the scarred skin a gentle kiss she sank her fangs into his flesh, moaning at the bittersweet taste that flooded her mouth, she hadn't even realized how much had she been craving this until now.
It soothened the irritating heat in her stomach and made her feel less tired. Like a gulp of fresh air and God how great he tasted, she didn't remember it being this good.
But as all good things she knew it had to come to an end when she took the fourth gulp.
Never more than five gulps, because much like her he was also in a weak state, taking too much without giving him time to heal could harm him, and the last thing she wanted was to harm him.
Their blood was… not good… feeding off each other was like an endless cycle of pouring the same water into two different glasses, it would never make an actual difference, not as long as nothing new was added to one of the glasses, it eventually called for something new.
Last time any of them had any venom was two weeks ago, Peter and Charlotte had taken advantage of being at the Cullen's house to sneak into their room and leave a wine bottle under their bed filled with their venom.
But Jasper and Alice were two, and while Alice could go weeks without venom Jasper needed venom at least once a day, like a human with iron deficiency having to take their iron pills everyday.
And considering how long it had been since any of them had any pure venom… they hadn't been smart with the intake.
Now it was back to feeding off of each other's blood, and she couldn't even give him as much as usual for it always made her feel dizzy after the second gulp, so Jasper was worse than her right now, and still…
She pulled back from his shoulder, licking the trickling blood until the wound sealed altogether.
Once that was done she pulled back, just enough to face him, silver against gold, Jasper smirked before pulling her into a hug.
-Feelin' better?- Came his muffled mutter as he pressed his lips against her neck in a soft kiss.
-Better.- She conceded after a moment before laying her head against his chest, the sound of his heartbeat was always lulling, it wasn't loud like a human's, no one would even notice it if they didn't knew what to look for, but it was there.
And it would always be one of her favorite sounds.
-I'm sorry about last night, I don't know what came over me.- She found herself saying after a moment, her finger fiddling with one of the buttons from his shirt, she still couldn't for the life of her understand why had she reacted so strongly over something so small.
She never raised his voice at him , their arguments were never shouting wars, both of them stated their points and tried to understand each other, a huge part of their relationship consisted on that, on talking to each other whenever a disagreement arose, people understood each other when they used their words.
-It's alright.- Jasper's soft voice alongside his gentle touch across her back almost made her tear up, guilt curling around her chest even deeper.
-No, it's not, I shouldn't have screamed at you like that, it wasn't right, nor should I have done what I did after, that's what crazy women do, scream at their husbands because they were having fun with their friends and then cry to make themselves the victim, then reward them with sex.
Jasper frowned at her words, pulling back just enough to tilt her head up so he could meet her eyes.
-Hey, you're talkin' about my wife there, she ain't crazy, she might have been in quite the mood because of the lack of venom, that's it, I've been there, she knows it, I know it, plus, I'm not complainin' about the sex.- He gave her a peck, smirking as he caught her little frown.
-I'm trying to be serious here Jazz.
-And I'm sayin' you're thinkin' too much about it, maybe that was it, you know how I get when I haven't had it in a while.
-But I'm not you, I'm not suppose to get in a "mood".- Alice reminded him, she didn't need as much venom as him, she could go on over a week without venom if she fed off an entire nomad before it.
There were two types of black bloods.
Those who became dependant on venom.
And those who didn't.
Alice was an in-between kind of deal.
She needed venom, but she could go on without it for prolonged amount of times without ill effects, the longest she's gone without it had been a month.
But even at the end of it she had been starting to feel quite lethargic.
Jasper was the kind who's body became dependant of venom, and by extension, he needed it to function normally, on a daily basis.
Venom junkie, she had heard Charlotte call him once.
Attempting to get him to lessen the dose wasn't a good idea, last time he tried to because of her encouragement he had gone rampage for hours, destroying everything in his path, and then he had proceeded to pass out.
-Hey, there's a first for everythin', do I need to remind you just how much there's still for you to learn? For your body to adjust to?- He questioned, now holding her face between his hands, thumbs stroking her cheeks softly.
Alice made a face at his words.
-I'm over a century old Mr. Whitlock, there's nothing much left for my body to adjust to.- Alice told, feeling a bit insulted at his words, she was long acclimated to being a black blood. Just because he was older than her it didn't meant he was more developed than her.
Or well.
He was, a bit, black bloods did grow stronger with age.
But the point still stood, she was fine as she was.
-Uh-huh, your three legged horse says otherwise.- Jasper's words made Alice groan before she was leaning back from him with a scowl.
-It was one time! In 1949! Can't you drop that already? Last I checked you couldn't even hold a sea animal form. At. All. Which I can.- She reminded with a triumphant grin.
Jasper scoffed at her.
Now it was his turn to look insulted.
And still, he couldn't help but grin, pulling her back into a hug and burying his face into the crook of her neck, peppering her with kisses, Alice's laughter filling the forest like a beautiful melody from Heaven.
They were fine.
