I went to the park. It seemed a safe place to just sit. Well, I admit that when I got there I just kind of collapsed in the grass. It seemed softer than normal. Damian flopped down beside me.
"What are you afraid of?" He asked.
I looked at him. "You, in a dress."
He laughed in spite of himself. "Fair, that would be terrifying. No, wait! I would rock a dress!" He sat up and made a face at me.
"Huh." I grunted as he laid down on me. I shoved him off, trying to be careful. That was a normal human. "Don't lay on me. What gives you the right?"
"Sorry, you just look comfortable." He mumbled.
"You okay? I guess Scarecrow got you before me, huh." I changed topics.
"Who wants to put you in Arkham?" He changed them again. "You were screaming about Arkham."
"Let it go, Damian. Sheesh, you're as annoying as…" I stopped.
"Hm?" He looked at me.
"Nothing." I shook my head. "Arkham is a topic of touchiness. While I was in the hospital for my, uh, condition, it was the topic of much… consideration."
"That's… Oh." He looked away.
"Mmhm."
"So, uh, who is Robin and why was she hurting you?" He seemed to be joking, trying to lighten the mood.
"He." I pulled my knees to my chest. "He was taking me to Arkham."
He looked like he was in shock. His face drained of color. "I guess you win for most horrible hallucination."
"What?"
"I hallucinated that I killed you and my family." He closed his eyes.
"You barely know me." I started to think this guy was crazy.
"I, er, get attached pretty easily." He curled up into a ball. "It's just something I do. Don't think too much into it. I know you aren't into me."
"Jegus, I don't know you. How can I be into you?" Now I knew he was nuts. If anything before was indication…
"Harmony, fuck, is it that difficult?!" He turned on me, angry. "Why would I just up and follow you around if you didn't already know me?!"
I flinched. He was a ferocious little fuck when he wanted to be.
"I don't understand." His voice barely went down in volume. "I don't get it! I know we only dated a couple of times, but, like, is it that hard to guess my voice? It's not like I try and disguise it or anything!"
"Look, pretty boy, you're freakin' out and I gotta go home soon. Mum is gonna flip her shit if I don't."
"It's me!" He pinned me and hissed. "It's Robin! Dammit, did I have to spell it out for you?!"
I flipped him over and pinned his arms. "First off, don't you dare touch me like that. You don't get to hold me down. Second, you're right. I don't recognize you as Robin. Because I have done nothing for the past month besides try and die, and lemme tell ya, it's harder than you'd think. So I don't give a fuck if you randomly saw me on the street and decided to follow me, that doesn't make you Robin. You saw how I got snatched up by a wackado with every intent of making me piss myself."
I sighed and sat back on his stomach.
He stared at me. A slow rage was building in his face.
"I gotta go." I stood. "Call your mom and have her pick you up or something."
"My mom?" He sat up, still quietly storming. "I haven't seen her in a while."
"I was talking about Batsy." I cocked my head to the side. "I can put two and two together, even when I don't want to. Why else would Batman be so concerned about Robin dating me?"
He didn't look surprised. "You tried to die."
"That's really what you're focusing on? I tell you I know who Batman is and the first thing you focus on is my attempted suicides." I rolled my eyes. So Robin.
"How many times." His teeth ground together.
"Enough to know it doesn't work. I even managed to do it without Rex or Harley or Ivy finding out, if you can believe that." I laughed. "I even tried drinking straight bleach! Not a damn thing happened. Well, I burped a few times." I amended. "I didn't even taste it. The bleach, that is."
His face was pale once again. He lunged at me and threw his arms around me. I almost fell backward in surprise.
"You've… You've lost your mind." My chest felt constricted. It felt like I couldn't breathe all of a sudden. It kinda hurt.
"I've lost my mind when you're trying to kill yourself?!" He gritted his teeth. "Listen, okay, you can't do things like that."
"I already tried. I know I can't."
"Shut up!" He bit my neck and I gasped, again more from surprise than from anything else. It felt like a gentle pressure, like he'd put his two fingers against my skin and started to pinch. "You don't get it. You don't. Shit. Just… Don't move."
I didn't. He didn't either. It was weird. He just hung on me for a long time. Then he let go.
"I guess you should go." He stared at his shoes. "You can't keep Rex waiting."
"Rex can hold his horses. It's Harley I'm worried about." I corrected.
"Right. So yeah. I guess I should go. Can't keep Mom waiting, can I." He nodded solemnly.
"Nope. She'll kill me if I keep her brat out late." I crossed my arms in front of my chest.
"Yeah." He half laughed.
"Go home, bat-kid." I tried to keep up an appearance of being calm, but I was screaming inside.
"Sure, sure. Do I get another date?"
"Go home."
"I'm not leaving until you say yes." He looked serious.
"Fine, whatever, I'll be here tomorrow night." I sighed.
"Yes!" He jumped and started to run off.
Damian paused and returned to me. He kissed my cheek and smiled like he'd won a prize. Then he ran off.
I slowly walked home. Late-night drunkards and gang members hiding in alleys watched me pass by but oddly enough didn't bother me. Maybe I looked too lost to mess with.
What do I do?
I spent the rest of the night pacing the front porch. Not even Rex could get me inside, so he just sat outside watching me mumble to myself. When the sun started coming up, I plopped my ass on the chair beside his.
"You okay?" he actually sounded concerned.
"I don't know." I sighed. "I had a rough day."
"Penguin looked like he was gonna shit himself."
"I thought that was from you." I muttered.
"Nah, Penguin and I have a good relationship-ish thing. He gets the jobs done that I pay him for and I don't kill him. We just don't mess with each other and everything turns out fine." He shrugged.
"Rex, I'm lost." I leaned against him.
He didn't move except to stroke my hair. "Speaks the words to me. Tell me your woes, lil sis."
"Robin."
"Did he hurt you?" His hand tensed on my head.
"No. He asked me out again."
"Oh." He relaxed. "Good, you need to get out of the house more."
"Funny." I grumbled.
"Look, I get that your parents are dead. But they're gone and you need to let them go." He played with my hair. "At least Robin is trying to help."
"Help." I scoffed. "He got his ass captured just like me."
Rex froze. "What?"
Shit. Forgot to mention that. "Um, he and I got picked up by Scarecrow. On the orders of Baby Doll and Killer Croc." I winced.
He stood. He was unbelievably calm. Then he kicked the house door in.
"Rex, you can be civilized for once!" Ivy's voice grumbled. She had just woken up and was about to put on a pot of coffee.
"I want everyone up. I know it's early. Baby Doll and Killer Croc and Scarecrow kidnapped Harm earlier today." He said quietly. "I know we had plans, but…"
Ivy's mouth dropped. Her skin turned pale. Joker was coming down the stairs, Harley bounding after him. She hadn't heard a thing.
"I've been meaning to expand my network for a while." Joker said groggily, rubbing his eyes. "Sure, let me eat something and we'll go. I'll even get the Joker Gas ready." His grin widened. It was almost as wide as Rex's resting face.
Rex was silent through breakfast. Ivy pulled me aside as I got up to rinse my plate.
"He's going to kill them." She said in my ear.
"He's pretty calm for someone who is about to murder someone." I glanced over to Rex, trying to picture him murdering Baby Doll, who looked like a five year old. I couldn't picture it.
"He doesn't get mad. When he's angry, he gets calm." She shook her head. "Watch out for him, okay? You might as well have been born his sister at this point."
I nodded and went to Rex. I hugged him from behind. He didn't say a word, just continued to eat his eggs and bacon.
