Falling

Falling, falling, falling. Ever since his daughter had died in a tragic accident, Leonard 'Bones' McCoy had been falling. And the crew could see it. He blamed himself, told himself that he should have been there to hold her hand, to fix her, instead of in the dark depths of space. So the crew tried to help. Jim dragged him out of the med bay to drink or play chess. Spock confiscated his alcohol stores and beloved hypos. Chekov made up aliments, just to see him and spend those few minutes talking. In contrast, Sulu was awkward, unsure how to help and in the end, he decided on brightening up the med bay with all manner of exotic plant life. Uhura and Carol pulled him out to drink, to talk, to flirt but through everything, Leonard was reserved, quiet or drugged up and drunk. Nothing seemed to be able to light up the doctor's now black and empty heart. Help came from a rather unlikely source; head engineer, Montgomery Scott. It wasn't that that Montgomery taught Leonard how to fly, more that he yelled at him to stop falling. And Leonard realised that he could float all along. Slowly, slowly, bit by bit, Montgomery showed him how to float higher, until he was safe again.
