Katy reluctantly agreed to go out that evening, even though she thought it was too soon for Henry to be out and about for long periods of time. She worried about the germs and illnesses out there that he could catch. God forbid Henry should get sick and wind up back in the hospital; she'd never forgive herself or whoever planned whatever was going on tonight. Callen assured her that Henry would be fine and that she'd have fun. By the time she'd gotten out of the shower, dressed and did her hair; Callen had Henry dressed and the diaper bag packed with enough formula, diapers, wipes, changes of clothes, burp clothes and anything else he thought they could possibly need.
Callen and Henry were waiting in the dining room when she walked out of the bedroom. Katy had to laugh when she looked at the overflowing diaper bag. Together, they went through the diaper bag and took out everything other than the absolute essentials; five diapers, wipes, two changes of clothes, three burp clothes, a bottle of water and enough formula for three bottles. When Callen looked at everything else he'd packed sitting on the table, he had to laugh.
"We can never be too prepared." He laughed.
"Honey, that wasn't prepared, that was overboard. He doesn't even play with toys yet." Katy laughed as she slung the diaper bag over her shoulder.
"Well, I'm a first timer. You've got to cut me some slack." He said leaning down to kiss her.
"I know, and I appreciate your effort. I am going to write this in Henry's baby book so he can laugh about it too when he's older." She told him, patting his chest.
"Thanks." Callen laughed and rolled his eyes.
Callen picked up Henry's car seat and headed for the door while Katy grabbed their jackets, her purse and the keys. She locked up while he put Henry in the Mercedes. Once the three of them were latched and belted safely into the Mercedes, they headed out. Katy sat with her arms crossed over her chest waiting for Callen to tell her where they were going. He didn't, so she just watched the world go by. She thought they were going to the Mexican restaurant, but instead of taking a right, Callen took a left. When she thought they were going to yet another restaurant, Callen went the opposite direction. Thoroughly confused and frustrated, she was content to just see where they ended up.
Like Katy had originally thought, they pulled into the parking lot of their favorite Mexican restaurant, but from the other direction. He'd made sure Katy was good and confused when they pulled up. Satisfied with his efforts, he smiled at her and got Henry out of the back seat. The hostess greeted them as she usually did, but stopped when she realized Katy wasn't pregnant anymore. Of course the hostess and all of the servers they knew had to stop and look at Henry who was sound asleep. Katy cringed as they all insisted on touching his hands, face and head. An older woman who spoke very broken English saw Katy was uncomfortable with the women touching Henry and shooed them away.
She looked down at Henry sleeping peacefully and congratulated them and introduced herself as the restaurant owner. All of the times they'd been there over the last year or two, they'd never seen the woman, but were please to meet her just the same. One of the bust boys passed and said something to her and she nodded. The woman looked at Callen and smiled, then showed them to the back room.
Katy smiled as they walked towards the doors, knowing everyone should be there waiting. She was taken aback when they walked in and no one was there. Katy looked at Callen, who just smiled. Within seconds, everyone jumped up and yelled surprise. Quickly Katy looked down at Henry who was turning red and ready to start screaming. Callen rushed over to one of the tables and took Henry out of the car seat hoping to sooth him before he started crying. He almost made it, by the time he was lifting him to his shoulder, Henry was crying.
It was a rush of friends and family, hugs and hellos. Katy was so surprised by some of the guests and how far they'd traveled to help her celebrate her birthday. Where she'd expected only their local friends and family, she found some of her cousins as well. The only cousins that weren't in attendance were Svetlana, Alexey, Misha, Maksim and Alex. Katy kept looking at Callen in astonishment, though she shouldn't have been surprised. Once all the greetings were made, they all sat around the tables. As they all chatted, the foot was bought in and set in the chafing dishes that lined the far right wall.
"Paul, what are you doing here?" Callen asked surprised to see him.
"Well I was in New York on business. Oleg and I were actually out to dinner when you called about the party. I rearranged a couple meetings and flew out. I couldn't miss the chance to help Katy celebrate her birthday. Not to mention I wanted to see this little one." He said as he bent over to get a good look at Henry who was now sound asleep in Callen's arms.
"I'm so happy you could make it out." Callen said shaking Paul's hand.
Katy walked over to the two and hugged Paul and thanked him for coming before she kissed Callen and then the baby. "I can't believe you put all of this together. I'm really sorry I got so mad at you this afternoon."
Callen wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her close. "The look on your face when you saw everyone was all the thanks I needed. Don't worry about this afternoon; it was actually kind of funny if you think about it."
Paul watched them with great curiosity. "What happened?"
"Callen was on the phone all morning and afternoon. I got mad and locked him out of the house." She said as she turned red.
Paul laughed. "It was a chilly day too."
"Yes it was." Callen added. "By the way, I was on the phone with your father when you stole the phone from me."
"I guess I owe my Dad an apology."
"No need Katya. It was unfair of us to keep it from you, especially after you said you didn't want anything elaborate." Ivan said as he walked up behind them.
After everyone had eaten and more socializing the cake was brought in. Katy cried when she saw the delicate fondant flowers and beautiful piping along the outer edge of the cake. Ivan was nearly in tears with her and hugged her tight when she turned to him. "It's beautiful Dad."
"A beautiful cake for my beautiful daughter." He said and kissed her cheek.
It was after eleven when Callen, Katy and Henry walked into the house. Katy had a permanent smile across her face. Callen headed in to put Henry to bed and found her still standing in the living room. He walked over to her and asked if she was alright.
"I'm fine honey." She said and wrapper her arms around him. "I can't thank you enough for tonight. I also apologize for my behavior this afternoon."
"You already apologized." He smiled and softly kissed her.
"I know I did. Even though it's late, how about I start a fire and we spend some time here in the living room?"
He smiled again. "Sounds good to me, only one problem, you haven't been cleared for that yet."
Katy gave him a devilish grin. "Well, what the doctor doesn't know won't hurt him."
Callen groaned. "As much as I'd love too, I don't think its right. If we wait it will make our first time after the baby that much more special."
"If I wait another three weeks, I think I'm going to die. I want to feel you again." She said kissing his ear.
"God Katy come on stop." He moaned.
"Just this once, then we'll wait the three weeks until I see the doctor again." She pleaded.
Callen couldn't take the look she was giving him anymore and kissed her hard. "I know I'm going to regret this."
Katy returned to work after finding suitable care for Henry. She hated leaving him every morning and couldn't wait until they picked him up at the end of the day. Life was as normal as if could be with an infant. Half the time she and Callen went to work exhausted from lack of sleep. When he was two month old, Henry caught his first cold. Both Callen and Katy were horrified when he woke screaming in the middle of the night with a high fever. They ran him to the ER only to find he had an ear infection. Hetty gave Katy the time off to take care of him until they felt he was healthy enough to return to day care.
When Henry was four months old, he caught his first stomach bug. Katy felt like she was changing him every five minutes. If he wasn't throwing up, he had it coming from the other end. Both She and Callen took time off for that illness and wound up getting the bug themselves. They thought he was good for a while until he was six month old when he got sick again. Katy had had enough. It was time to talk to Callen.
"Honey, can I talk to you about something?" She asked standing in the doorway to his office.
He spun around in his chair and smiled at her, muting the game. "Sure, what's up?"
"It's about Henry."
"He's doing better right?" He asked worried.
"He's getting better, yes. I'm concerned about his health. This is his third illness in the six months he's been alive. I know kids get sick, but every two months?"
"I know it's a little much. If you want to find another daycare provider, that's fine with me."
"Honey, can we afford it if I don't work?" she asked.
He thought for a minute and nodded, "Yeah I think we can manage, why do you want to stay home with him?"
"I was thinking about it. I doubt he'd be anywhere near as sick as he is now. If things get tight financially, I can work part-time in the evenings and on the weekends."
"Are you sure this is what you want?"
Katy nodded. "The owner of Dad's bakery heard I'm a pretty good photographer. He wants to see some of my photos. He told Dad he's interested in being more inclusive in the wedding department and was interested in adding photography to the packages."
"You'd leave your position at NCIS to raise our son and become a wedding photographer?" Callen asked cautiously.
"I wouldn't necessarily leave NCIS all together; I thought more of a leave of absence. I could start back after Henry goes to pre-school."
Callen pulled Katy onto his lap. "If that's what you want to do, I support you one hundred percent. I'll miss working with you, but I agree that it's whatever is best for Henry. I suggest you talk to Hetty about it soon. Preferably within the next two months so Henry doesn't get sick again."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes Katy I'm sure." Callen told her and kissed her.
Henry went back to daycare later that week. Katy saw Hetty sitting at her desk when they walked in and told Callen she was going to talk to her. He smiled and kissed her temple before walking to the bullpen. Kensi, Sam and Deeks were already there and asked how Henry was feeling. Callen told them that he and Katy had decided that she was going to stop working for a while so the baby wasn't sick so often. It hit them hard, but understood. It would be different once Katy left, back to the way things used to be, just the four of them.
Hetty understood as well, though she couldn't promise her job would be waiting when she decided to come back to NCIS, if she did decide to. Deep down, Hetty expected this. Had she given birth to someone as precious as Henry, she would've done the very same thing. Since it never happened, Hetty focused on her career. With Katy sitting at her desk, she made the call to Director Vance. He was sad to see her leave, but understood. Katy gave her two week's notice.
It was odd not to have to get up and go to work every day, but Henry was happy, healthy and thriving. Callen saw that Katy was happier too and that was all he wanted. He knew eventually she'd get bored with being a stay-at-home-mom, but for now she loved every minute of it. Occasionally Katy and Henry would drop in to the office for lunch. Everyone loved seeing how much little Henry had grown. When he was ten and a half months old, he walked to Daddy for the first time, there at the office for everyone to see. Callen didn't care who saw, he cried.
They'd planned a huge first birthday party for Henry. Everyone was invited. Ivan made the cake, which of course was beautiful. Henry like every other one year old was head to toe cake when he was done with the little six inch cake Ivan made especially for him. Callen ran him to the bath while Katy cut the cake and passed it out. Once everyone had eaten their cake, Henry sat up with the help of Mommy and Daddy and opened his presents. He was more interested in the sticky bows and wrapping paper than the toys he'd received. Katy took adorable pictures of Henry covered in all of the bows from his presents. A few others with Callen covered in bows. It was a good day.
When Henry was two and a half, Callen and Katy tried for a second child. After a heartbreaking appointment with the obstetrician, they learned that Katy wasn't able to have any more children. There was always the option of a surrogate, but Katy didn't want to think of another woman carrying their baby. She cried for days. Callen was so patient with her on the days when she couldn't get out of bed or spent the majority of the day in tears.
It wasn't until Hetty pointed out that Callen's family name would live on that Katy snapped out of her depression. While she wanted more children, the legacy of the Callen name was just as important if not more so. In time, Callen suggested getting a dog. Henry was old enough to throw a ball and was rather good at it. He even had his own little baseball glove. The cats were getting older and more antisocial. When Henry charged through the house the cats headed for higher ground or behind a baby gate. Katy agreed and they researched breeds.
A year later, they finally settled on a black lab. They did have their health issues and personality quirks, but the puppy was so good with Henry. He could drag her around by the tail or pull her ears and she never growled or snapped at him. At night, Callen had to literally drag her out of Henry's room only to drag her out five or ten minutes later. When they couldn't keep her out of the room no matter what they did, they just let her sleep in there with him. Once Henry graduated from a crib to a toddler bed, Mazy tried to sleep on the bed with him. The two would take turns pushing the other out of the bed.
When Henry was five and ready to start kindergarten, he already knew his ABCs and 123s. He could write all of the alphabet upper and lower case. Count to fifty and write his name; not just Henry, but Henry Ivan Callen. What impressed the teacher the most was that he read fluently. Callen attributed it to Katy staying home with him and thanked her every day for her sacrifice and hard work.
With Henry in school full time, Katy went to work at her Dad's bakery. Not the one he managed, but his own. Little by little, he taught her the art of cake decorating with the hope of handing the business over to her when he was too old and arthritic to do the piping and make the decorative flowers. Her first wedding cake was Kensi's. It had taken them long enough, but Deeks finally asked her out. Three years later, they were tying the knot. Katy also offered to take the photos, but Kensi wouldn't hear of it and insisted she be her Matron of Honor.
During the ceremony, Henry sat between grandma and grandpa while Katy and Callen were part of the wedding party. At the reception, Henry stole the show when he and Uncle Sam cut a rug on the dance floor. Michelle, Katy and Callen sat back laughing.
As time slipped by, Henry got older as did her father. A week after they celebrated Henry's tenth birthday, Ivan died of a massive heart attack. It was very difficult on everyone, surprisingly Hetty was one of those hit the hardest by his death. She was now grandma and grandpa. He was laid to rest in a beautiful ceremony in the very same cemetery as Amy, looking out at the same pond.
In time, the hurt faded and Katy took on her new role as business owner. Callen continued working for the Office of Special Project even after Hetty finally retired. Kensi and Deeks had moved on to bigger and better things, as had Sam. Callen took over as the Operations manager. The old team was reunited when they laid Hetty to rest. Granted over the years, those who knew her became fewer and fewer, but you wouldn't have guessed by the numbers that attended her funeral. She too was buried in the same cemetery as Ivan and Amy.
Henry graduated high school and was off to college, a business major so he could help Katy with the bakery and then one day take it over. Callen finally retired and the two of them traveled the world. He took her to Romania and she took him to Russia. A few years after Henry graduated and became a fixture in the bakery's day to day operations; he met and married a beautiful young girl whom Callen and Katy adored. Within a year of the nuptials, Callen and Katy met the first of four grandchildren. The once empty house echoed with the laughter and pitter-patter of children and Katy's heart soared. She and Callen would watch the children every chance they got.
Katy was devastated when Callen passed away in his sleep at the age of eighty-four. She spent the rest of her days wishing for more time with him. Henry tells everyone that knew his parent's that Katy died of a broken heart six months after they buried Callen. Henry and his family moved into the house and planned on keeping it and the bakery in the family for generations to come.
