day one. severance.
caledonia eslin, district two. eighteen. xviii.
x
Melina is the first face she sees when the doors open.
Caledonia follows her mentor's lead, standing tall amongst the mass of bodies clamoring to steal a look at their newest champion. The platform is a blur of blinding lights and cheers, disorienting yet empowering.
The girl she's tried purging from her memories moves through the crush of people like a puppy chasing after its owner. Caledonia refuses to look back.
Only a few more steps and she can take the coward's way out. Keep her weapon sheathed. Left foot, right foot. Left foot, right foot.
A hand reaches out from the crowd.
"Donny!"
The slim girl's touch sears like an iron. Her stomach sinks.
Killing in the Arena wasn't this difficult. She never knew flaying skin would be easier than breaking a heart. In the end, it cuts the same. Ichor and steel. Lives lost, love cut short.
It was just a fling, she tells herself. Unimportant and fleeting. A distraction. The district needs her, now more than ever.
Through gritted teeth, Caledonia delivers the killing blow. The sword is swung. A hopeful stare crumbles into realization, and then misery.
"Who are you?"
It's like severing a limb.
Happy pride month!
What better way to celebrate than writing about sad sapphics, am I right?
Been developing this project for a while now and I'm excited it's finally come to fruition. You can expect thirty drabbles to coincide with the month of June. Each prompt will focus on an original victor that identifies with some aspect of the lgbtq+ community. A wide range of identities, relationships, and personalities will be explored - all set against the backdrop of the Hunger Games world.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
See you soon. xoxo
