My vision came to, revealing I ended up in a forest. The sun was a bit past noon, casting a yellow glow around me. I looked at the device in my hand, impressed that it managed to work before I put it into my pocket and took out my phone. I clicked on the camera app and hit record.
"Hey guys, it's ya boy filming log one, I guess. I don't know where I am or where to go, but I'm hoping this will be a fun adventure." I said to the camera.
I took out my compass to help keep track of where I was but to my surprise the needle just spun around in circles, not pointing north at all.
"Well, fuck." I calmly said to the camera. "The compass I have is having a seizure right now, so I won't be able to keep track of where to go. I think I can use the sun to help track where to go. I mean, it's either that or I use the tracking device I have to help me find the portal device I stole from my dad which I doubt will help at all unless the portal device goes missing."
I picked a random direction to walk in after I put my compass away. I walked through the knee-high grass as I continued to talk to the camera.
"For those few of you watching this grand adventure of mine, you might wonder what I'm doing. I stole this portal device my dad made at his work so I will go on a few day long adventure. I'm not completely sure how it works, but it sent me to this forest with tall grass and big trees." I explained as I trekked through the tall grass.
I adjusted the camera on my phone to properly record my face as I continued saying, "I'm not sure what to do besides walk and talk. I'm not even sure what I'll encounter in this nice little forest so we'll just have to wait."
A few moments of silence passed where I didnt know what to say. This had been the first time I recorded myself doing something, and my improv skills were quite poor.
I quickly thought about my backpack before saying, "I think I am well prepared for this grandois adventure of mine. I got a few days worth of food on me, a canteen of water, a lighter because obviously, a portable charger for my phone, and a nice little swiss army knife. I'd say I'm pretty well prepared, I think. I'm not sure actually, I kinda just grabbed some stuff that I thought would be useful so to any survivalist viewers at home, maybe give me some advice for next time."
I reached a fallen log which I hopped over interrupting something I was excited to talk about. After I got over it, I said, "I have one more thing that I brought along with me since I think it'll be useful. My dad owned this glock before the laws in Canada were passed to prohibit them so I decided to bring it along. There were two magazines and a small box of bullets I grabbed so if anything tries to hurt me they won't be able to do shit."
A bit of guilt came over me so I said, "I feel a bit bad for taking my dad's gun and portal device without asking, but I don't think he'll find out. If what he said is correct, the device temporarily pauses time in our world as the user is in some other world, so it's not like me leaving for a few days will be noticeable. That, and I doubt he'll come across this video if I ever post it."
After saying that, I noticed something in the distance. I slowed down to figure out what it was, and after a few seconds I realized it was some sort of small building.
"Aw hell yeah, I think I might have found something cool."
I quickly made my way over to it, the details of the building becoming more noticeable. It was a small square shack with wood walls painted white that seemed pretty old and worn, the roof was made out of wood and rusty sheet metal, and from what I could tell, there was a doorway on one side and a boarded up window on another. I reached the little shack and stepped inside.
There was another doorway at the other end of the shack and a window, this one not boarded up. In one corner of the room were a couple of old red lockers. I thought it was kinda weird how there were two big red lockers in the little shack, and there were also no doors on either of the doorways. I walked across the creaky wooden floor and recorded the inside of the shack which, despite the lockers, had nothing else in it. I walked out the other door and continued with my adventure.
"That was a cool little sight, just a little abandoned building exploring. I don't know why that is in the middle of nowhere in this forest, but I presume there will be an abandoned house nearby." I guessed before I continued on with the trip.
As I was walking, I noticed how fast the sun was setting. After what was probably 20 or 30 minutes of walking the sun went from the afternoon to the beginning of setting, casting an orange glow over me. It didn't seem right, then again, I sent myself to a whole other world with a portal device. Some more time passed with nothing interesting until I noticed something white tucked behind some bushes.
"Oh, I think I found something." I cheerfully said as I approached the white object until I could fully see it. When I did, my heart sank. There were three skulls, human skulls, tied together and propped up on some sticks. Beneath the skulls were some bones and candles which were not lit.
"What… what the fuck!?" I fearfully said. I quickly recorded this deplorable artwork before I hurried away.
"What the fuck was that?" I asked the phone. "I just, holy shit. Those were human skulls, three of them. And they were tied together so a person did it, there was a fucking psychopath in this forest."
I continued lightly jogging away while saying, "I don't know what I should do. I don't know where the police are in this world, and even if I do find them I'm not from this world. I think those skulls have been there for a while because there was no meat or blood on them so I think the murderer isn't anywhere near me. I guess I can continue this adventure then, after all, if those skulls were from a few-"
I stopped talking when I heard a twig snap. I stopped walking and listened. Maybe I just imagined it. I mean, I did just see a few skulls, so maybe I'm just paranoid? Right?
My attempts to rationalize the situation were thrown out when I heard another twig snap. I hovered my hand over the Glock in my pocket as I looked around.
I was frozen. I didn't know what to do, where to go, if I should say some sort of threat to scare whatever it was off, if I was just being too paranoid, I just didn't know.
I slowly maneuvered my phone's camera around until I heard footsteps. There seemed to be multiple pairs of them along with voices, both male and female. I couldn't make out what they were saying besides a few bits of laughter. I stood there like an idiot until a few figures walked into view.
There were four of them, each looking to be in their late teens, each of them with a hood over their heads. The lead one wore a dark grey jacket which looked very similar to one the blond girl behind him was wearing. One with pink hair wore a dark blue hoodie, and last one wore a black hoodie. They noticed me and all stared at me.
I snapped out of my fear since they were just a random group of friends so I cheerfully said, "Hey, how's it going?"
The four of them looked at each other without responding. I felt a bit awkward, but I tried to carry the conversation by saying, "I'm kinda new to the area so I'm out exploring right now, I saw some human skulls somewhere over there so you four should be careful."
The four of them gained a somewhat amused look after I said that. The lead one finally said something, that being, "You saw human skulls?"
"Yeah, they were tied together over some candles," I replied.
"Where exactly were they?"
I turned my back to them and looked out to the way I just came from. I tried to figure out where exactly I saw the skulls and said, "I think they're just fifty or so metres that way. They were tucked in behind some bushes so like, if you wanna find them yourself it might be kinda hard."
I slowly turned around to look back at them while saying, "I'm not sure who did it but I… what the…" I trailed off as I finished turning around.
The four of them had put on masks while my back was turned. The lead one and blond one dawned white masks with smiley faces on them, the pink-haired one wearing a white stitch mark-looking mask, and the last one was wearing a cloth mask with a skull pattern.
"I… uh… who are you?" I nervously asked as I backed away with my hand over the gun in my pocket.
The lead one took a step forward and pulled out a large bloody knife.
I quickly drew my glock and pointed it at them. "Stay back!" I warned.
"Where the fuck did he get a gun?!" The skull mask one asked.
"I uh, please let me go. I don't want any trouble, ok?" I nervously said as I slowly backed away from the four of them. I heard some branches break over to my left so I looked over. As I did, I noticed a new figure approach.
It was a woman wearing red clothes with black feathers, and it took me a second to realize how horrifying she was. She was overly long and lanky with pale skin, and it looked like her eyes were replaced with black liquid. I noticed her hands were made up of the same black liquid, forming pointy fingers.
"That… what the fuck that's not right." I quietly said as I backed away from her..
She let out a loud shriek before launching a murder of crows in my direction. I ducked down, dodging them before I took off running in some random direction. I didn't even care about what I was filming, I just wanted to get as far away from that group and monstrous lady as I could. I heard more shrieking as I blindly shot a couple of bullets behind me, hoping it would scare off any pursuers.
I charged through the tall grass and occasional bush, too scared to look behind me. As I was running I could hear that monstrous lady shrieking in the distance as the occasional murder of crows came flying my way, narrowly missing me. I also thought I could hear the sound of running and laughing from the masked group some distance behind me.
Hopelessness slowly started to grow in me until I noticed a clearing in the distance. I got closer until I saw that there seemed to be a town. Relief hit me as I realized I was near civilization. I picked up my pace until I finally burst from the tree line, entering a leading through the town. Whatever happiness I had faded away as soon as I realized the condition of the town.
Each building looked old and abandoned. Trash littered the streets, broken cars were parked along the curb of the cracked sidewalk, and the buildings had cracked windows that were smudged. I felt even more confused and shocked when I realized how unfinished the town was. It's not like the town was under construction, it looked as if this was just a chunk of a town was pulled from somewhere else and planted here. Some streets lead nowhere, there weren't more than a few dozen buildings which seemed to be lacking some details, most notably with the signs, and everything just seemed partially frozen in time.
Before I could notice any more problems with the town I heard the group chasing me get closer. I ran deeper into the town just as the four of them came running out of the trees. I ran past a few buildings before I reached an intersection. I made a left turn and ran down this new street, breaking line of sight with the group and quickly diving into a random store. When I was inside I found a hiding spot under a counter and waited.
I could hear the group turn the corner and run past the store I was hiding in. After they ran past there was just silence. I remained hidden for a little while longer before I even considered leaving my hiding spot. I crawled out from under the counter and made my way over to the glass door. I did a little check to see if anyone was outside before I left the store. After I was sure there was no threat I took out my phone and started to record.
"Yeah, so I'm leaving. I didn't expect to be in some sort of abandoned town with psycho high schoolers and tall monster ladies, but I'm not dealing with this."
I took out the portal device and turned it on. I tried to activate the device but an error message popped up telling me to get to someplace more elevated. I sighed and looked around for where to go. I noticed a tall building which had a fire escape along the side of it, so I started to make my way over to climb up it.
As I walked over I recorded myself while saying, "I don't think I'll be using this device again once I leave. I think I'm a bit in over my head, so doing something like this again could probably kill me."
I neared the alley the fire escape was in until I heard something fall over. I stopped walking and just stared at the alley. I was about to put the device away when a tall man with a mask and overalls ran out of the alley and swung this jagged blade at me. I jumped backward, falling over and dropping the portal device in the process.
The tall man slashed at me with his grisly-looking weapon as I crawled backwards, it missing and colliding with the pavement. As he was winding up for another swing I quickly stood up and began running away. I ran into the store I had just left and slammed the glass door behind me before turning the lock on the door. The tall man rushed over and stared at me through the glass door. I stared back, studying his body.
He was unbelievably muscular, wearing bloody overalls and a skull-like mask with jagged teeth. He also had jagged spikes sticking out his back and shoulders. I didn't know how someone could just function normally like that. I recorded him for a few seconds until he raised his blade and shattered the glass door.
I stepped back and drew my Glock as he reached his arm in to unlock the door. I repeatedly pulled the trigger, emptying the rest of the magazine into the man. He brushed off the first few bullets, but after getting shot thirteen times he finally took a few steps back and stumbled over. I put a new magazine into my gun and stepped out of the store. The man laid there, seemingly dead.
"Oh… oh fuck no… I killed someone." I said out loud. Guilt started to well up in my chest as I realized I had taken a life. Yes, it was self-defense but it's still a person I had just killed.
I stared at the body for a few seconds before I closed my eyes and tried to calm myself down. He would've killed me if I didn't shoot him. There was nothing wrong with what I did. As my eyes were closed, I heard movement so I opened them, newfound horror striking my heart as I did. The man I had just killed was sitting up now, the bullet holes in him slowly healing. He turned his head to me and although he was wearing a mask I could tell he was full of rage.
I turned and ran away, unwilling to try and fight that thing. I reached another intersection and was about to run down it until I noticed another figure, this one wearing clothes similar to a cowboy and armed with a bulky harpoon gun. He took aim at me so I jumped behind a car, avoiding the harpoon shot. I stood up and shot a few bullets at this cowboy, all of them missing. I continued to shoot at him as I ran away, only a single bullet of mine striking him in the arm.
Despite the chance the cowboy could reload and shoot me, I continued running down the street and turned another corner, accidentally crashing into someone else. I fell onto my ass and looked up, realizing I ran into a tall lady wearing old dirty clothes and a bunny mask. She had an axe in her hands and she stared at me with both curiosity and annoyance.
"Oh fuck I'm so sorry." I worthlessly apologized as I stood up and ran away.
As I was running I looked back just in time to see her raising a hatchet above her head. I figured she was going to throw it so I dove behind a light post. I heard her grunt as she threw the hatchet, it bouncing off of the light post I was taking cover behind. I figured it was safe to run somewhere else now so I sprinted to the closest building near me. I threw the door open and slammed it behind me, locking it. It didn't have any windows so I figured I would be safe.
I caught my breath and walked through the store, reaching an emergency exit at the back of it. I opened it up only to see a small group of people standing outside of it. They yelled in fear and quickly backed away from me.
They didn't seem like the people I have been chased by so far, so I asked, "Are you going to kill me?"
One of them, a guy wearing a white shirt, tie and glasses said, "No, we're survivors, not killers."
"Ok, so you're not like those other guys?"
"Not at all, we're trying to avoid them like you. We were on our way back to our campsite after we heard some gunshots. Who are you?"
"Oh, I'm new here," I replied, not keen on telling anyone my name just yet.
"If you're new here it's best you come with us." He advised.
With no other options, I stepped through the emergency exit and started to follow them.
Chapter end.
