Lancer

EMIYA stared at his opponent, the Lancer of this war. And the said heroic spirit looked nothing like Cu Chulainn that the Counter Guardian remembered from his first Fifth Holy Grail War.

For one, this time around, the Lancer was a girl. A fifteen or so years old girl, with long red hair in a loose ponytail. And her outfit – a dark red dress with a short pink skirt underneath and red boots with black buccaneers – would actually fit a Magical Girl more than a warrior of a spear... Oh, and despite having her halberd out and being ready to fight, this girl was still munching on some apple, which seemed to be annoying Archer beyond any reason.

"So, what d'ya want, white-tops?" The red-haired Servant addressed to her might-be-opponent casually, while still continuing to eat her apple. EMIYA grit his teeth, visibly annoyed by the nick-name he had just been labeled with, but let out no intelligible response.

"Attack, Archer!" Toshaka Rin ordered. Nodding to her, the Counter Guardian summoned his favorite paired blades and charged at the Lancer. And a moment later he learned that the said girl was not only smaller than him, but also faster: she had no troubles blocking both Kashou and Byakuya with the shaft of her halberd. While still eating that damn apple and somehow giving him a blood-thirsty smile at the same time.

Not discouraged by the failure of his first attack, the Archer tried again. With the same result: he couldn't swing his scimitars faster than this girl could block them. At least that was the case when attacking from just one side. It was time to try attacking from multiple directions at once. Jumping back and throwing the blades he held in his hands, EMIYA traced another copy of them, before charging at the Lancer again – if he had done everything right, she will find herself under attacks from multiple directions at once.

Alas, it seemed that the red-haired girl-Servant was ready for something like that as well: she had split the suddenly-much-longer shaft of her halberd into chain-linked segments, using them to block all of the incoming attacks at once. And she was still eating that cursed apple, though, by now she was mostly done with it.

Returning her halberd to its original state, the Lancer thrust it at her opponent, who jumped back to get out of its range. Then, a moment later, he was forced to jump back again, as the polearm's shaft suddenly doubled in length. Was it her Noble Phantasm? EMIYA was quite sure that that was the case. Thus, he tried to analyze it.

The results were rather unexpected. Her weapon simply didn't exist for his structural analysis, it was like it wasn't even there! This was quite troublesome as it left him with no ways of knowing what other tricks were there to this polearm.

"Are you done yet?" The Lancer asked as she threw the apple's stump into the closest waste-paper bin. "It's my turn now!" EMIYA wasn't sure exactly what happened, but as the red-haired girl raised her hands, four afterimages doing the same thing appeared around her. Then she attacked. All five of her, each completely identical and quite solid copy following its own path.

The Archer had no ways of determining which was the real one, at least not fast enough. Oh well... Dismissing Kashou and Byakuya, the white-haired Counter Guardian traced one of the many swords he had collected into his Unlimited Blade Work over the years and fired a wide arc of fire from it. One of the five Lancers moved out of the attack's way, marking her as the real one, while her illusions were obliterated by the arc of fire.

The same attack of his also revealed a weakness of the red-haired Servant: she, despite her variable-length halberd, lacked any options for the truly-ranged combat. That was something that the Archer was going to capitalize on, especially since she, as a smaller and faster opponent, would be very dangerous for him up close and personal. So he fired a few more arcs of fire to force her to put some more distance between them, before tracing his trusted bow.

He was going to use a Broken Phantasm, and in his very first fight in this war. But, then again, it was not like he couldn't recreate the sword as many times as he wanted to, so no big loss. Except for collateral damage. And announcing it to everyone spying on the fight that he had a talent to replace a Noble Phantasm he was about to use as an ammunition. Oh well...

Pulling back the string of his bow, EMIYA fired his freakin' sword like an arrow. This unconventional attack seemed to have caught the Lancer by surprise as she froze for a moment. And when she finally tried to dodge the incoming projectile, it was already too late. And even though the redhead managed to avoid the full power of the attack, the flying sword still pretty much removed her head.

"Alright, we're done here." The white-haired Counter Guardian said as he saw the beheaded body of his opponent collapse onto the ground. Turning around, he began walking towards his Master... But before he could manage even ten steps, a movement behind him caught his attention. Whirling around, he saw something he wasn't prepared to see: the Lancer – still missing her head, though it was now rapidly regenerating – was rising back onto her feet.

"That hurt." She hissed in a rage-filled voice. "That fuckin' hurt, you bastard!" And as soon as her eyes regenerated, EMIYA could see the raging inferno of loathing in those crimson orbs... There were few things in the world that could still scare him, but, right now, those eyes made him wish to run far away, as fast as he could.

And then the Lancer charged at him...
