Chapter 44
Sirius
The day after Remus attacked me, I was very bored. Remus and Lily were in the library, and had banned James and me from going in there for today. Can you believe that?! I mean, how rude! So, James and I were just wandering aimlessly around Hogwarts with Paddy, doing nothing at all. Normally, we wouldn't have cared if they banned us, we would ignore them and just follow them in there...and annoy them until we got to leave – they would forgive us after while, only made it more fun if they needed some convincing. But not today. Oh no. Both of them had that look, the look that basically said 'you annoy us, you die'. Ok, well maybe not die, but...you know what, never mind. In the bored state my mind was in, thinking became even more of an effort!
Paddy was just jumping around like a lunatic. I taught him well. But it was kind of tiring just watching him when you were this bored!
"What do you think they're doing anyway?" James asked, as we continued to walk.
"No idea, mate." I sighed, as we walked out of Hogwarts and onto the grounds. "But whatever it is, I hate it."
"You and me both, Pads."
"At least someone's having fun."
I gestured to Paddy who was chasing after a small bird that had flown too close to the ground. I sighed, running after him. I mean, if he went too far, we'd never find him again. He'd probably run off into the Forbidden Forest, knowing our luck. Paddy was still a tiny ball of fluff. Sure he was the runt, but he was part Husky. It was strange that he was still so tiny. Normally, the fact he was so tiny was fine, it meant you could pick him up, and Remus loved that. But it wasn't so good when he was running off, because he could fit in really small spaces.
"Pads, just...change." James whispered to me, when he caught up. "It'll be easier."
I nodded. Hiding behind a tree, I crouched low, changing from Sirius to Padfoot. As soon as I was a dog, I charged off in the direction I had last seen Paddy, and luckily he hadn't gone too far. I couldn't help but charge through the Slytherin group where my 'brother' was along the way. It was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. Luckily, it didn't take me off course; it just gave me a little short cut towards Paddy. James was behind me somewhere, running after me too. Well, at least we found something to do.
I must have been chasing Paddy for fifteen minutes before I finally caught up with him. He was still jumping up and down, trying to catch the bird. Honestly, he was like a three year old...only he had a longer attention span. Sighing – which sounded weird when I was a dog – I padded over to the little dog, picking him up by the scruff of his neck with my teeth. Paddy made this little sound. The only was I could describe it was a surprised little puppy yip. I turned around, while Paddy was wriggling, trying to get back to the bird. Thankfully, James wasn't too far away. Slowly, I made my way over to James, passing Paddy to him, before diving behind another tree and changing back.
"Bloody hell!" I panted, walking back round the tree.
"Tired?" James chuckled, out of breath.
"Yeah."
"Know how you feel."
"I don't see how he has so much energy."
"I don't think we want to know why."
"Point taken."
James passed Paddy to me. The little dog nudged my face with his, trying to climb up my face. Nothing unusual there. Laughing slightly, I readjusted Paddy so I could actually see, before turning back to James.
"Back to the common room?" I asked.
"Common room, dorm, I don't care. As long as we don't have to walk around the same places anymore, or chase him around." James replied.
I laughed, taking one hand off of Paddy to punch James on the shoulder. We started to walk towards the castle again, slowly, trying to catch our breaths.
When we stepped into the common room, James and I spotted two very familiar people. People who said they were going to be in the library until dinner. It was two in the afternoon. Neither Lily nor Remus – who still had his hair spiked, since he ended up liking it like that – had realised James, Paddy and I had walked into the common room. James and I looked at each other, both realising that we had been lied too.
"Thought lying was our job." James whispered.
"So did I, Prongs. So did I." I whispered back.
"The bloody cheek of it!"
"I know. But we taught them well."
"Why else do you think I fell for Lils? And besides, Moony's a Marauder, lying is a necessity when you're a Marauder."
"Oh, too true mate. Too true. But still, without our help they would never have been able to fool us. I mean, come on. We're the masters of lying."
"But you two are obviously not the masters of whispering." Lily called.
James and I fell silent, slowly turning our heads towards Lily and Remus. The two of them laughed when they saw the looks on mine and James' faces. We trudged over to the two, sitting on the sofa opposite them. I placed Paddy on the floor, and he immediately ran over to Lily and Remus, jumping onto their sofa and lying in-between the pair of them, promptly falling asleep.
"Oh, sure, he does that now." James muttered.
"Of course he would. He normally does." I sighed, leaning into the back of the sofa.
James mumbled to himself, it was too low for me to hear, but it was probably something about and Paddy, with many profanities thrown in. Lily and Remus just continued to laugh, whispering between themselves and laughing more each time one of them said something. I did hear James' name mentioned, though James himself didn't seem to hear a word. I became highly intrigued at that moment as to what they were talking about...and of course to what they had been doing the whole time.
"So, why'd you two lie to us?" I asked.
Remus and Lily looked towards James and me, a little guilt evident in their expressions.
"We just wanted to talk and discuss...things. Just the two of us." Remus said. "Can't really do that if you're both around too."
"Didn't need to lie." James murmured.
"We did." Lily sighed. "Otherwise the pair of you would have interrupted countless times."
"Only because we would have been bored." I moaned. "Which we were, by the way!"
"Well, Lily and I have exhausted pretty much every topic we could think of and you're here now." Remus chuckled. "So, there's no point in moaning now."
"Is. You lied."
"Are you going to fixate on that?"
"Yes, because you lied."
Remus and Lily sighed, rolling their eyes. James and I crossed our arms, similar to how an impatient or whining child would. And by child, I mean James. I mean, let's face it, he was very much like a child, everyone knew that. Remus and Lily continued to whisper to each other about whatever they were talking about before we came in – the thing to do with James –, while James and I just sat there like stubborn children who hadn't gotten there way – and looking back on it, it was very stupid and childish of us.
Later when we were in the dorm, James was asleep and Remus was sitting up reading, I turned to Remus on my side and poked him. Remus smiled slightly, continuing to read. So I poked him again. His smile only got wider with each poke. After a while, he took one hand off of his book and placed it on my head, playing with my hair. So I continued to poke him. It took three more pokes until he placed the book down on his bedside table and looking down to me.
"Yes?" he chuckled.
"I'm curious." I said. "What were you and Lily talking about earlier?"
Remus sank down, so we were eye level, leaving his hand in my hair.
"Everything really." Remus told me. "NEWTs results, muggle stuff, the usual."
"Why did I hear James' name mentioned?" I asked.
"Well, I had asked Lily what she wanted to happen a couple of years after Hogwarts."
"She say she wanted to marry Prongsie by any chance?"
"Yeah, she did."
"Bloody hell, it's like the two of them share one brain."
Remus laughed, leaning his head forward to rest his forehead against mine.
"What else did she say?" I asked, smiling slightly.
"Said she wanted to have a baby." Remus replied. "That's why we were laughing when James said 'Oh, sure, he does that now', when Paddy fell asleep."
I snickered at that. While James would be a good dad, I could see why Lily and Remus thought it funny. I mean, if James thought a dog was hard – especially when it wasn't his – then he would have a whale of a time with a baby. But it would be fun though. A baby Marauder. Oh, the things we could teach that kid. I was brought out of my daydreaming by Remus shaking a little, trying not to laugh.
"What?" I asked.
"You're face goes all funny when you daydream." Remus chuckled. "It's cute."
"Oh, shut up."
"Make me."
"Don't make me make you."
"Go for..."
Snogged him before he got a chance to finish. Preferred this method to tickling, since Remus knew he could get me back now. It didn't even occur to me that Remus was still hiding one of his and Lily's topics of conversation. Well, didn't occur to me at the time anyway. But it wouldn't be long before James and I would find out.
