Previously…
Beckett was happy. But like every rollercoaster that is life, hers took a plunge for the worst. After a series of events that led up to this eventual happiness that she was so deserving of, Beckett let her guard down, one of the many mistakes everybody makes when they think everything is okay.
Wrong.
Rain ceases, but never stops entirely. Like rain, misfortune ceases, but never really stops. It will always come back.
To Beckett, it came back in the form of her boyfriend, Richard Castle.
.
Lanie came out in a rush and panic, "You've got some explaining to do and I have something to tell you,"

Beckett got out of the car and put the Starbucks on the roof of the car.
"Why? What did I do now?" she asked, unable to hide the smile that was creeping onto her face.
"Don't play with me girl. I'm serious." Lanie said with a straight face as she reached for the bear claw Beckett had brought her.
"Ok…" Beckett furrowed her brow in worry.
"Honey, is there any particular reason you're moving in with him?" Lanie asked with a less panicked tone.
"What is that supposed to mean?" Beckett asked, beginning to feel slightly defensive.
"Nothing. I'm sorry I didn't mean to imply anything. I'm just… Castle called and he told me something and I just got a little worried. That's all."
"Worried? Why, what did he say?" Kate put her coffee down and gave Lanie a stern look.
"…I can't talk about it. I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't have brought it up but the tone in his voice and what he told me, it just…I'm not going to lie to you Kate, it raised a red flag with me," Lanie looked away.
"Why? Lanie please don't hide anything important from me. Is he ok?!" she pulled out her phone and immediately started dialling his number. Lanie put her hand on the phone and stopped her before she could hold the device up to her ear.
"Honey, I'm sorry for making you panic so much but I do think you should go talk to him. Something just seems off. What he said to me, it wasn't bad. It wasn't wrong. I just wouldn't typically view it as being something people do to celebrate taking the next step in a relationship. It just confused me, that's all."
"If it isn't a good thing, why won't you let me call him?" Kate asked. She was confused and torn between dropping everything and driving to the loft or staying here and discussing things with Lanie.
"He told me to be discreet. He didn't even want you knowing that we'd spoken on the phone. He called about 15 minutes after you'd told me that you're going to move in together. My first reaction was good, but after I'd thought about it a while, he just seemed strange and I do think you should go talk to him but please don't mention that you talked to me first." Lanie said as she looked Beckett in the eye.
The information she was withholding from her dear friend was enough to change her life and the bad vibes she was getting from the way the information had been presented to her was enough to change her life, for the worse.
She couldn't quite understand the knowing that was coming to her but for no reason, Lanie felt that the good news was coming from a bad place and she needed to do something to help. She wondered why Castle had decided to do what he was doing and involving Beckett in. It was something people did when they worried for their safety and so of course Lanie knew something was off. Even for Castle to bring this up was strange, but he was taking action and it didn't feel right.
"I'll go now," Beckett said softly, looking down at her feet with a solemn expression.
"I'm sorry for getting you this worried, I'm sure it's not as bad as I'm imagining it to be. In fact, it's probably nothing and I could just be paranoid. I wouldn't put it past me," Lanie tried to smile and make Kate feel better but he smile was bright enough to convince Beckett.
"I know you're only looking out for me," Beckett gave her friend a genuine smile of gratitude; because she knew everything that she'd just been told was for good reason. It was bringing her back to reality. She'd always known that no happiness will last long; it would eventually have to balance itself out with something calamitous.
"I'm going to go see him now. I'll call you later," she swallowed and took the Starbucks off of her car roof and opened the car door. As she drove off, Beckett thought about how lucky she'd felt for the first time in a while. But somehow, the luck had felt too good to be true.
Beckett never wanted to lose herself with being in a good place in life, had she been carried away this time? She never lets her guard down but this time, had this happiness gone on too long?
